Great University in New Orleans where you can and will receive a QUALITY EDUCATION. As do most state schools, they're underfunded, understaffed & seemingly have a high turnover rate; in my opinion. HOWEVER, when it comes to education, they're #1!!! No spoon feeding, hand holding over here; if you want it, you have to WORK for it. The struggle is REAL. But upon graduation or course A/B level grade course completion, you will know the material FORWARD AND BACKWARDS. Not bashing other universities, but a UNO Degree holds weight; here you get OUT WHAT YOU PUT IN!!!! I pray for more funding; this university is a treasure and need not be lost due to bureaucratic red tape.

Review #400.After being in the work force for over a decade, I was displaced in a manner of speaking. I graduated from high school in the mid 1990's, and had gone to community college where I was living. In my search for a 4-year university to transfer to, UNO was suggested to me. I applied, and was admitted Fall term 2011 as a junior in the College of Business Administration. This school is built on what is a former military installation, as you may be able to tell by some of the older cookie cutter houses surrounding it that all look like military housing. The base was closed sometime in the mid-1950's, and the state took over the property, creating the University of New Orleans. In recent years, the basketball team has had some recognition for their stellar plays. My anxiety was high as I moved across the country to come here. I do feel as if I got a well rounded education, and was exposed to differing points of view here. Though it took me another 2 and a half years to graduate, I can say that I did it.The gym is nice, has an indoor swimming pool, an elevated track above the basketball courts. The University Center houses the student government, the dining hall and several kiosks of fast food. All of the buildings were clean and neat that I have been in. The school of Business is awesome. The career development center is very helpful and will help you in getting your resume in shape. I would be careful of the tutor center for the school of business, as I did not find them helpful. The main piece of advice they give is to read the textbook. They are unable to help with the details of accounting. The Cove was still closed when I first arrived to UNO, but they finished renovating it my second term I was there, and that was nice. It is also nice that they have the Privateer Enrollment Center in the library, taking up half of the first floor. It is nice to have one stop shopping for financial aid, Veterans Services, the bursar's office and be able to get your parking pass and student ID all in one place. It was all in separate areas and buildings when I first got to UNO, and quite the pain to get to everything, as the steps seemed out of order to get everything done. The streamlined affects are wonderful. When it comes to the parking pass, I think it is a bit on the high side for prices, and parking is at a premium. The library is pretty cool. When it was built, there was a rule put into place that nothing could be built between it and the lake so you could have unobstructed views from the 2nd floor up. That is a great idea. The only reason you can not see it from the first floor is due to the levee being in the way.In the spring, they have a crawfish boil that is free for all students, and a small charge for the alumni. They have plenty of things to do. An outdoor movie night near the cove. Plays, musical performances, and so much more. I am glad that I came, I am glad I graduated. And I am glad to have done my first two years at a community college to transfer so I did not have to retake the ACT!Also, when you (as a student) have enough credits to be considered a junior, each term, there is an option for a fine dining experience. The intent is to get you more comfortable with the experience of dining in a professional setting. Half your table will be students, the other half will be faculty and staff and will give insights on how to properly handle yourself in public with future bosses, coworkers and other business people. Too cool! And a great experience! This may not be the most popular school, but the basketball team has made some traction with improvements lately. You are in a good part of New Orleans, and you are close enough to all of the action in one of the coolest cities in the world. All in all, I appreciate my experience and education here. I do feel prepared for the much anticipated career change, and am grateful for the opportunity. This university is more of a commuter school, but as an adult student, I, in no way, shape or form, felt left out or old. I highly recommend this school for a well rounded education that is well earned. Some of the Business Administration courses and more of the Accounting courses really tested my stamina and drive for a degree. Truly. Please do not mind the younger students that guide the orientations or the tours of the university, they do not fully represent the entirety of the school, but talk to some of the students if you can.

This is a review of the UNO gym only.Product: N/A (no rating)Service: This gym has all the services one might expect at any public gym. On the whole, the employees appear to be students, but they are more than competent for the task at hand. Services include personal training assistance and classes such as spin. (3 stars)Facilities: I would go so far as to say state-of-the-art. This building is 2 stories in height, with a spin room, basketball court, pool, and locker rooms downstairs. The locker rooms are top-notch, with lockers, full showers, steam rooms, sinks, and toilets.Upstairs has a track elevated above the basketballs courts and the weight and general cardio room. Most of the equipment is in working order, though on any one day a few of the ellipticals or treadmills are out of order. There are TVs throughout, with remotes available to change the channel to one's preference. Resistance training includes free weights and machines. There are sanitation cloths available to prevent nasty stuff like staph, the common cold, or flu from being transmitted via contact with equipment. There are water fountains both upstairs and down. (4 stars)Bonus: Student and faculty discounts are available.Overall: An above-average gym for the New Orleans area. I would still use it, but it is inconvenient for me, the location being in Lakeview. (4 stars)

Man, this should have been my 200th review! Oh well, a bit over #200 will do.I would like to start by saying that I am a PROUD alum of The University of New Orleans. I not only received my Bachelor of Science in Psychology here (as did my father), but I also came away with a well rounded education that included classes, not only in Psychology, but in Geology, Biology, Arts, Anthropology, Art history, English, Foreign Language, Computer Science and three different Maths (one of which nearly killed me. Trig is the devil.). Am I bragging? You bet your bow tie I am! That was a lot of hard work, man!You can take classes online, which makes it really easy to work around your schedule.UNO offers a huge and gorgeous campus with buildings for classes, student housing (apartments and dorms), a student center (in which a student bookstore and eating area is held), a library, a performing arts center, a gym and an arena where sports events and concerts are held.Did you know that UNO has a children's center that caters to children of faculty and students ages 1-5 years? They are called the petite Privateers! How cute is that?Parking at UNO is really convenient. Buy a parking pass at the beginning of the semester and park in the parking lot closest to your classes (planning classes by day that are all in close proximity to one another is an art all it's own).If you are interested in social activities at UNO, they offer everything from Basketball to Football (for 2 years now) to Greek life. There are a lot of organizations that you can get involved in, in the arts as well. When I go for my Master's degree, my plan is definitely to return to UNO. UNO alums be heard! Review today!

Writing a review about UNO is a bit difficult. I first attended UNO in 1998 when it was an entirely different place. Bienville Hall was still a dorm and the top two floors had just been remodeled; the rest of the place was a dump. The Cove was open and featured the Sandbar, an actual bar where I could get beer on my meal plan. Then I took several years off before returning in 2004 to the Lakefront campus with evening classes. By then the Sandbar had been converted into a convenience store but the Cove still had food. We all know what happened in 2005. UNO was heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina and when it re-opened in the Spring of 2006 it was a different landscape. A lot of buildings were closed (some of them still are) due to damage. The Cove was condemned. The first floor of almost every building was trashed and being worked on. I was now back full time for my Bachelors and taking classes all over campus as things shuffled around in the madness. I even had one class in a tent! But things carried on and (as silly as it sounds) our school spirit kept us together.More than half a decade later things continue at UNO. They now have new dorms and a new Cove (with a new Sandbar). Classes continue, as always. I earned by Bachelors and came back for my Masters. I've worked for the University as a student worker and then as a TA in graduate school. Despite everything going against it UNO has still managed to grow and improve. Hopefully the continuing budget cuts won't hurt UNO so badly it can't recover. In the almost 15 years I've watched UNO grow and develop I've been a visitor, a student, an employee, and even a teacher. I'm proud of my degree (and hopefully soon a second degree).

As it is more of a commuter school with less on-campus life and activities, I don't know that I would recommend it to anyone from out of state or out of town with no contacts in the New Orleans area. However, for those that have already completed a degree and aren't looking for the quintessential college experience or those that have a network of friends or family in New Orleans or the surrounding area already, UNO is an absolute dream. They have all of the same academic offerings as a larger university, Greek life for those that are interested, and an updated rec center and on-campus apartments. All of this for one tenth to one quarter of the cost of a state university in Louisiana or Texas. UNO is definitely a great option for a college education.

I am a graduate of UNO and have to say that despite the fact that it's a commuter school and the faculty/staff has the tendency to give you the runaround, I still don't regret my decision to come here. The school itself provides a good education at an affordable price. This is part of the reason why it has the rep of a commuter school, but I would rather be able to afford and education and not go bankrupt than pay more money to have a party-atmosphere of a campus life like LSU.I have heard UNO is a lot harder than schools like LSU, Loyola, and even Tulane proving even more that they really do try to educate you into the workforce. The campus life isn't that great, but if you get involved, you can easily make a lot of friends. My freshman year I was a member of the Student Activities Council and made a lot of friends participating in that organization. I also was a member of UNO Filmmakers, which gave me the opportunity to make friends with people within my major. I also recommend getting an on-campus job if you are looking to make friends on campus. A lot of the college students with on-campus jobs are either already living on-campus or they want to get involved on-campus (even if they may commute).I only gave it 4-stars because I have gotten the runaround from faculty/staff, which is annoying. I feel like they can do more to increase the campus life and to make students proud that they go to UNO.Overrall, I'm proud to say I'm a UNO alum. U-NEAUX!

Only about the bookstore and the fact they are absolutely unreasonable. If you are coming to UNO buy your books or rent them online don't use the bookstore. It's not owned by UNO but by a sub contractor who does not care about the students.

As a recent college graduate at UNO, I encourage you to apply here ONLY if you don't mind being around many different people from many different places around the world. Why?CONS (FOR LOCALS): 1. The professors cater more to international students. Their lesson plans seem to aim to strengthen other students' knowledge of subjects that are new to them. 2. There is no real campus life.3. The cafeteria food is inspired by many different cultures.4. Not many people around you will speak English or at least be from America.5. Large enrollment number.PROS (FOR LOCALS):1.The film/theater department is amazing.2. The gym/recreation center is very spacious and has a lot to offer, including a lap pool and free fitness classes.3.There is plenty of parking available.4. If you like diversity, this is the right school for you.5. You will be challenged academically which makes for a graduation well worth it.

Received two degrees in Accounting and Finance at UNO. Price and quality of education is very sound, and for those two programs there's a ton of resources on campus, and great professors. I'd enroll again for continuing education. What makes their Accounting and Finance program unique is the professors that are available to you. The professors here have a ton of experience related to the work you're trying to pursue, and the professors encourage you to go to office hours, and offer themselves as a mentor post graduation. Great university.
