This was my first Salvage Store, so it holds a place in my heart. I always leave with a basket full of goodies for under $25 and that's an amazing experience in and of itself. An unfortunate thing about TSS is you can't expect to find the same things every time you go, so if you get attached to something you may be in for a huge disappointment when you go back and it isn't there. The fresh fruit and vegetable section of this store is sometimes a little.. unappealing. I have to remove a star for all of the brown leaves on the greens, but there have been times when I got five mangoes for $1 and they were fresh and excellent so your mileage may vary.Keep an open mind!

I am thankful that I ignored the lukewarm advice of my fellow Yelpers. Had I listened it would have been a HUUUGE mistake. Probably one of the biggest in my life. And I am not joking. This is a lesson that sometimes in life you have to forge ahead and see things for yourself and dammit and this was definitely one of those times.I was especially leary since I was driving from New Orleans which is about an hour and 15 minutes away. I was especially discouraged because I had been looking for a salvage store and found out the morning I wanted to visit the Hickory salvage store that it had been closed. So I opted to visit here at the last minute. This place is a frugal person's PARADISE and it was well worth the drive. The first thing that you are greeted with is a Mystery beverage vending machine. For 35 cents you too can put your money in and drink God knows what. There are also options to drink diet Mystery drinks. I can't report on the beverages though.I ignored the pleas from my kiddos who wanted a mystery drink as I was there to do serious business. They grabbed a copy of the free New Testament Bibles located near the left side of the store's entrance and we made our way in.We began near the front of the store where the toiletries, soap etc were located. I ignored that section as I did not see any products that I needed/used. They did backflips when they saw assorted packs of gum that were selling 5 packs for a dollar. Each pack normally retails AT LEAST a dollar each. Though I told them that there was NO WAY I was going to buy them, somehow I came home with it anyway as they used their own chore money to purchase it. But that's another story. There was meat near the front, which I was not interested but I was told by one meat eater that the meat was fine. After several fellow shoppers beseeched me to purchase the chicken I finally did. (It was a buck fifty for AN ENTIRE CHICKEN) and I said to myself that it was so cheap that I would just cook it and serve it to the meat eaters in my household.I made my way to the dollar grab bags and these were SUCH A DEAL. ONE ITEM in these bags were worth a least a dollar and they were stuffed with all sorts of snacks and goodies. I grabbed seven of these. I did not buy the bread near the store as they were a dollar and I have been able to find them cheaper locally.By the time I got there, the grapes had been sold out. (I refuse to buy grapes nowadays as those puppies are a ridiculously priced at least two dollars a pound.)I searched high and low for the HAAS avocados (which were selling six for a dollar) that were on sale and the OWNER decided to give me an ENTIRE CRATE FOR FREE!!!!He said that they were overly ripe and that I could find some decent ones but I have to look. He graciously took the crate and put it in my car for me! :) I just used some for an avocado hot oil conditioner for my hair LOL and planning some guacomole this weekend too :)I rolled my cart riiiiiight past the non-salvage items which were regularly priced and went on to the other aisles. These weren't ridiculously priced btw. Each aisle is a treasure trove of items. Each shelf was stocked plus there were loads of bins to dig through. I found six cans of soda for a dollar, six pack of exotic beers for $4 and PLENTY of items that were dirt cheap. As this is a serious hunting excursion leave the kiddos home or come prepared with diversions or snacks to keep the little ones busy. (My littlest one got cranky near the end and my older ones were a bit tuckered though they thoroughly enjoyed the experience as they are WELL VERSED in the price of merchandise.) I found numerous organic and hard to find items. The merchandise changes frequently and I was told that they a truck that comes in twice a week. For those who used to go to Suda Salvage, this is BETTER and cleaner according to several people I spoke to.Don't bother if you are picky about expiration dates (or what I call First World problems LOL) While you turn up your nose there will be more for me and for others who are looking for a good deal. (I figure that the owner of Salvage Store are not looking for liabilities and there is no REAL danger.) I ate most of the snack/goodies and I happy to report that I am STILL alive! LOL.Some items in the grab bag were not expired and I detected no quality flaw in the ones that were. I even won over my super picky hubby. I spent $60 and my oversized cart was brimming overstuffed with items.I also made a visit to the liquor wholesale place. (Follow the directions in the other reviews but basically you can't miss it. Its in the same strip next to the Subways. It seems to be owned by the Salvage Store too.)Not a huge liquor buyer but it seemed cheap with a large variety. The beers seem to be priced the same as in the Salvage Store.Needless to say I plan to make my way up there AT LEAST once a month.

I shop there twice a week always excited about what treasures I will find their chicken is fantastic usually between 59 and 69 cents a pound and they are young and tender the same brands you pay $3.29 and up in other stores. I have never bought anything bad. There are real good deals in produce if you get there before it's gone.

I love this place! When I'm in town visiting from Texas I always have to go and stock up on wine at the wine warehouse. Just never know what I might find!

I love it. We go about once a month, sometimes twice, to stock up on the stuff that I would normally buy at a much cheaper price. Know your prices. You can make out with some incredible deals.

This place is awesome in a twisted sort of way. It embodies everything that is wrong with this country in one small store. The food is, as is suggested, damaged or expired goods salvaged from other places around the country, and in fact sometimes from other countries. The stock is ever-changing. Last time I went, they had just gotten in what looked like half of a shut-down blockbuster video's dvd collection, and about a half ton of baseball caps that had been rejected because of defects. The prices are ridiculous. Years ago, everything was really cheap here. The way it should be, considering it's 2011 and you're buying a smashed and dented product that expired in 2009. But now their prices for these expired, abused products are more expensive than most chain grocery stores charge for fresh, new products. But somewhere in that twisted irony is a humor that makes me love going here. To see the snaggle-toothed country bumpkins of folsum dig through these shelves of damaged goods to pay exorbitant prices for them, because that's the way it has been for years. There are other grocery stores and even a couple restaurants in this little town. The store does offer some other fun objects: "Mystery Cans", my own title for the wrapperless silver cans sitting on one shelf with a 5 or 10 cent price scrawled quaintly upon them in black sharpie. Shaking them, much like a christmas present, can give some clue to their contents, but there is nothing like finally getting one home and opening it to see if your guess was correct. My friends and I have even made a betting game of it on occasion. Deeper in the store you will find sort of pseudo grab-bags. They are clear plastic and you can easily see what is in them, but you are forbidden from opening them or they won't sell the contents to you. These fun little bags are a dollar, and I like to pick them up for fishing bait. Sometimes, it's just fun to go fishing with a melted snickers or a smashed granola bar, or maybe even a bag of barbecue chips. Now friends, the real highlight of this store is the ultra-discounted liquor. Actually, scratch that. 5 years ago, that was the highlight of this store. Now the ultra-discounted liquor is ultra-expensive liquor, but fear not. Salvation lies just around the corner. Literally. Go out the front door and hang a left. Walk past the subway, hang another left towards the foreboding looking warehouse. This discount liquor warehouse around back is owned by the exact same people, except here the exact same bottle of liquor you saw for $20 on the shelf of the salvage store, is $3. So stock up, drink til you run out and then take another drive back to this little slice of americana and laugh until your stomach hurts at just how ridiculous this store is.

I still go to this store, and if it were not 5 minutes from my house I would not. They must have spent hundreds of dollars, if not a couple thousand on all the signs and t-shirts stating "We're cheaper, Guaranteed!", but they are not. They are very proud to tell you that their guarantee is that they will give you 20% off of one item that you find cheaper somewhere else, and you have to prove it beyond any doubt, take a photo, show receipts, etc. and Get this, they STILL sell the item for the higher price to other customers! I don't care how many signs you put up, you still FAIL when you do not have happy customers. $20 maybe, and change the price on all those items IMMEDIATELY, but 20% one a $2 box of cereal? WHO CARES! I saw one woman complaining about it, and after she walked away the manager made fun of her and called her cheap! I have told managers nicely, too and they act more annoyed than appreciative, and they probably make fun of me too. I was just trying to be helpful.I went today and bought a food item that cost more than $4.50 at The Salvage Store. I then went to the grocery store there in town, which has high prices- the exact same item was 33 cents cheaper at the market! We opened both of them, and the one from the Salvage store, as usual, tasted like it had sat out in the heat for 6 months. I paid MORE for an item that I would up throwing out- again. NO money saved on that shopping trip! Some of the cereal they sell for $2.50 or $2.99 or so a box is all so stale my children won't eat it, and when we gave it to our dog, she wouldn't even eat it. You also have to watch the cereal and pasta and rice! We got a bad case of pantry moths from a box of pasta I got there, and we have spent a lot of money trying to get rid of them. If you get pasta or rice there, you have to check it for moth worms. Sometimes there are little cocoons that have not hatched yet. Gross? You bet! if you leave it in your pantry, they will hatch and you will have them in everything. we had to throw out all our food, twice, fumigate the whole house, and that cost a lot of money! We no longer are tempted in the slightest to get pasta or rice from Salvage store, no matter how cheap it is.And their frozen food? in the past year I have bought nothing that was edible. I suspect that they must make it a policy to let everything thaw and sit at room temperature then re-freeze it just so it has freezer burn or is just terribly soggy. If the people that worked there ate this food, they would know, and would mark it down really cheap at least, but $9.99 for chicken wings that smelled rotten after we baked them? I don't think so. My dog ate well that night, again! They used to do a daily special that was worth stopping in for, but today it was outdated store-brand butter for $1.99 a pound. I already stocked up on that last week when Winn-dixie had theirs for $1.99/pound, and it was not old expired or melted! The manager told me that the owner is friends with someone that sells him Parade items, an off-brand. I don't know what the deal is exactly, but you HAVE TO stop selling that cr@p. nobody wants to pay full price for something at your salvage store, or even close to it. it is just bad for business, period. It is a SALVAGE store. Salvage= stuff that would normally be thrown out, but you are selling it *CHEAPER*! it needs to be *MUCH* cheaper! this is why your customers are not coming any more!Owners of Salvage Store: I don't know WHAT you are thinking, but you would do a LOT better business if you relied on making your customers happy and word-of-mouth, like you used to. I used to know people that would drive an hour across the lake to go to your store, NOBODY bothers anymore because you SUCK. 5 years ago, people told each other about the great deals they got at your store, now all I hear about your store is people sharing their horror stories! Clean up your act and stop charging so much! your merchandise is VERY inferior to other grocery stores, and your prices should be VERY much lower! Your customers are tired of your games. Just sell it cheaper and eat the stuff yourself so you can see what is stale and what is not and price it accordingly. Stop "nickel-and-dime-ing" your CUSTOMERS! We will just stop going to your store, THAT is why your business is down- Get it??? Also pay a couple good people to run your store and to be cashiers. I have seen so many customers leave their carts and walk out when you had two cashiers that were slow as molasses. And get someone to manage that knows how to manage and get stuff done and pay them accordingly. If they are just going through the motions and picking up their paycheck, it is not going to work.In short, my dog loves all the food she gets that we throw out to her after shopping at this store, and the ants are the only ones that eat the cereal, it is so stale. Pet owners, this may be two stars for you, everyone else, onl

We decided to make a day trip from Metairie to see what this store offered. It takes about 1hour and 10 minutes from the heart of Metairie to the actual store, fighting crazy Saturday Northshore traffic. The store is small and cleaner than a lot of salvage stores I have visited. It has an extensive refrigerated-frozen food area. Yesterday they had everyting from Eli's cheesecake to food service Bourbon pecan pie seconds. Most of their 5 lb. food service frozen items (meatballs, chicken nuggets, etc.) price in a $9.99 a bag. You need to know your price point and shop accordingly-not everything is a bargain. That being said, right around the Subway sandwich chain next door is the liquor salvage. It is in a warehouse, so there is no wheelchair accessibility. They have what must be remainders from a very prominent liquor wholesaler in the New Orleans area. Yesterday they had all types of wine, along with flavored vodkas with some hard liquor thrown in. Hardly anything over $10.00 in the place. You would be wise to bring a box from home for your libations-just sit it on the loading dock and you can back your car up and go The. grocery is open 7 days a week and the liquor is Wednesday thru Saturday. Cash, credit or debit.
