Fancy restaurant open for lunch and dinner on the grounds of Houmas House. Great service on this day from Reed, a LSU student who is from the area. The cocktails from the connected bar were excellent. The food was very good. No need to leave the Houmas House to eat when visiting. I look forward to returning some day.

We came here to have dinner. Since we wanted to try different things, we headed off with two starters: the crab cake and the orzo seafood salad. Crab cake was nice and so was the salad. We requested to have a second set of starters in the form of soup and gumbo. Unfortunately, these were served immediately after ordering and we were sitting with four dishes. The result? Cold soup... The Napoleon Eggplant was disappointing: tasteless eggplant, little crab (the crab cake had more crab meat) and a sauce was plain, giving it a bland and simple taste and appearance. The waiter was continuously asking us for new items instead of letting us finish the food. They were also not clear on table etiquettes when it came to plating, tableware, and the like. For example, we got seated on a four person table but they left the menus and cutlery of the remainder two seats. All in all, not satisfied with the food and service here.Would not recommend to have dinner here unless you want to go for a simple burger after a visit to the plantation.

We were driving around Baton Rouge and surrounding area. Personally I was looking for a place for a nice dinner, maybe with a river view, or something more authentic- didn't quite know what- so we were following the river just for fun... and Google maps had the Houmas House listed as a point of interest, and so we stopped to check it out. What a serendipitous happening!! The place was awesome AND they had a restaurant? Yes please! No, we had not made a reservation... but the lady at the front made one for us on the spot: seems that we got lucky... it was around 5:30 ish when we walked into their store....so when you go to the restaurant, you get to walk around the garden (on the way to the Carriage House) for free! That's a plus The gardens are beautifully kept so one day I would like to get the house tour as well... but this day we were hungry, so we walked to our reservation...The Carriage House is just that: the little house next to the mansion, where the restaurant is located today... and there is a "turtle bar" right next to it that looked super charming and well stocked too!On with the review. Ambiance first: we were struck by the opulence of the place! It was just awesome: very "French- Louis xv style" (or "interview with the vampire" style ) type: the HUGE main table set in the center, the fireplace with tall mirrors on both sides, the resplandecent chandeliers... did I mention it's near Halloween time so the little decor just made the whole place more fun! There is a side room decorated with a hunting theme that adds to the opulent decor of this lovely restaurant. We were seated in this tiny table for 2 that I did not like... just because it was so small...It didn't fit with the opulence- the bread, drinks, plates all were just too scrunched up in the tiny table- just would have preferred a table for 4 seeing how there were severalAround and not all busy... but oh well.Anyway: the table setting was also beautiful. Their China says "Houmas" which I thought was a very nice touch. The menu was a bit underwhelming. It had limited options, but we had had the opportunity to see it beforehand at the shop, so we were prepared , which I thought was a very nice touch given the limitations. (At that time we didn't know the restaurant had this opulent look, so we were ok with the menu choices) but we had already mentally picked what we wanted, so he had a Po-boy and I had the shrimp and grits and we also had a Caesar salad. But first we had 2 Hurricanes... and they were potent: beware! The sweetness covers up the alcohol all too well! Thank goodness they brought a basket of bread/ which was delicious, warm and soft... maybe too good bread, and I may have had too much... because I was so full by the time my shrimp and grits arrived, that I had to take mostHome and didn't even have room for desert! What a shame! (Not the restaurant's fault - lol) So all the food was great. Flavorful, spicy, the shrimp tasted very fresh and the grits had some nuttiness or something to them that elevated them from your everyday grits: very yummy. As far as the po-boy it came with more breaded shrimp and scallops on the side that even he couldn't finish off the whole sandwich... and we were pleasantly stuffed. It was a good thing that we had to walk back to our car... that helped with the fullness and allowed us to have a nice hour-long drive back to our hotel in Baton Rouge! This place is a must visit!

This is one of my favorite restaurants. "Restaurant" is not the right word. "Experience" would be more accurate. I'll start with food. On the menu there is a pumpkin crawfish bisque that when I initially saw that combo I turned my nose up at it but decided to give it a try. I am so glad that I did - unlike anything I've ever had! I'm always so torn. Trying to decide what to get. For a first time, or I would have to insist on the eggplant Napoleon. It's piled high with so much lump crab meat. I don't know how they offer it for the price it is. But the pork chop with the sweet potato, mash and brussels sprouts... OMG!The service is always great! You're given a basket of breads and biscuits for the table with a couple of butter options. The butter with the Steen's syrup is my favorite. on our last visit, we were celebrating a birthday. The birthday girl was surprised with an array of sweets. But as I said, this is more than just a restaurant, it's an experience. Plan extra time before your reservation or after so that you can view the gorgeous grounds! From the house to the gardens to the fountains to the covered archway, you're going to need at least an extra hour for exploring .

During our first night and first experience in New Orleans we got some "touristy" things out of the way early. Bourbon Street is fun, but it's not exactly the scene I'm looking for anymore. We did a food tour in the French district the following day, and it was good. After the tour we took a break at our hotel, doing some research we decided to get out of the city. We wanted to experience a scenic drive and a plantation estate. Houmas House offered both.Excellent decision. We were able to walk in without a reservation for a table for 2 at 6pm. The restaurant was already busy, so we were grateful to be sat right away. Already a strong start.I wish I caught the host's name, because he was an excellent team player who got our waters to start and also helped deliver our drinks when they were made.I did, however, get our waiters name. Christian carries himself with class and optimism. I watched him manage a high number of tables and never lose his composure. He was attentive and always made sure we were updated as our orders were being made. The restaurant is small, and didn't look like it was equipped to handle the volume that it received that night. Understandingly so, some orders came out a little slow. Not nearly slow enough to complain, but Christian made sure we knew we weren't being ignored or forgotten.Apologies for the enthusiasm on the service, it really was that good. Onto the food!We ordered two hurricanes in the spirit of our location. It was on our "to do list" for New Orleans. Awesome choice, the cocktails were fresh, balanced, and delicious. Definitely try this!We started with the roasted beet salad. It was balanced with really good flavor. Just enough dressing and a nice start to the meal. WHEN I come back I want to try the diver scallops. For main entrees I got the Red Fish and my wife ordered the Eggplant Napoleon. I really love how they utilized crab meat in both dishes. It really adds a dimension to the dish that makes every bite worthwhile. Both had good sauces and were good portions to have you leaving satisfied.Lastly, we finished off our meal with the bread pudding. It came out hot and ready. The white chocolate sauce was delightful and made us so happy. Our anniversary is tomorrow, but this meal is probably our anniversary dinner as we fly out of NO in the evening.Thank you for an awesome experience, we had a great time on this property and at this restaurant.

I had this place recommended to me by family and I was just so surprised at this hidden gem! I was checking out the beauty of Houma House and decided to stop in to see if this place was as good as I was told. Well, I was delighted to find out that it was. The first thing you notice when you walk in is this beautiful atmosphere. It feels very homey and elegant when you first walk in and feels like you are sitting in someone's dining room. They started us off with homemade bread with butter and another spread which were to die for. I then ordered the burger and fries and the grilled chicken caesar salad to split and they were so tasty! Fresh ingredients prepared excellently. This is such a fun and unique place for a special brunch and it is definitely a hidden gem. I recommend!

It's a walk back in time. Excellent food options and they keep the landscaping mostly perfect. I checked out the Turtle Bar. The bartenders have excellent knowledge on drink perpetration and presentation.

Once a favorite restaurant of mine, but unfortunately it was not the case this time around. The restaurant it self had a very old smell to it the night we went. The bread service was not good except for their butter. The scallops were chewy. The salad was fresh but not remarkable. The short rib meal was good but not for the price. The grounds were the best part of this restaurant.

My husband and I had lunch at the carriage house and it was wonderful. The food was just like my grandmother used to cook. You can't get any better than that.
