As one of the largest churches in Louisiana, St. Joseph has a history that dates back over 130 years. It's not just big, but is architecturally impressive for a place of worship, especially in a place in NOLA. In fewer words, it is beautiful inside and out.I attended a wedding here recently and loved it all. It's a church with vintage vibes but on a gramdee scale. The upkeep can't be easy, but the staff has done a great job in maintaining its aesthetic. The acoustics are quite good, there is ample room for all guests, and a good amount of parking.I've been told the masses are well attended, but that it's never too crowded due to the massive space. It's easy to wander around in here and get lost in the various rooms, statue spots, I've seen and been in quite a few St. Joseph churches but this is among the most unique and magnificent I've experienced thus far.

In honor of St. Joseph's Day, I wandered over to this huge hulking church on Tulane Ave. Their St. Joseph's Day altar is beautiful but behind the altar rail so you can't get too close. And they had the lamb cake which has always been my favorite; that & prominent placing of the stuffed artichokes makes this a great altar to me.As for the church itself, it is often mislabeled a cathedral because it is so huge. It is a gorgeous enormous church with beautiful windows, carvings and statues. Love that it is so well kept AND that it smells like years of incense. I also appreciated the samovar-looking thing full of holy water, so you can take some home. Not sure how you'd make it up the huge front steps if you were physically challenged...maybe there's another entrance around back? Definitely worth a visit.

The church of procrastination featuring the 8:30pm mass which is probably the latest Mass said in the country. Absolutely beautiful church with great social aid programs including a homeless center. Perfect place to worship.

This is definitely one of my favorite churches in New Orleans. It is very conveniently located next to LSUHSC. Sometimes the library isn't as peaceful or as quiet as you would think it would be. This is a nice escape from the craziness. While I've been to this church many times in my life, the first time it really caught my eye was when I went here for a friend's wedding a few years ago. The church looked very nice in all the wedding finery. The priest was hilarious. One of the things that stood out to me most was that they allowed the bridal party to process and stand in a non-traditional way. The groom's three brothers all walked up together. The person's gender did not determine on which side the person stood. Both bride and groom had bridal party members of both genders on their side of the altar with them. I was extremely impressed! Way to go at being progressive Catholic Church! Of course, one of the reasons I loved this is because I have two brothers - you better believe when I get married they will be standing on my side. Gender shouldn't dictate who is important and close to me.

The only time I think most of us ever visit St. Joseph's is for someones wedding. Which isn't all that surprising. It's definitely a Bride's Delight. The church is beautiful which just accents it's claim to fame of having the longest main aisle in the city. (I looked it up, the aisle is 12 feet wide and 150 feet long.) That makes for a long walk that stretches out for as long as possible the bride's magic moment when all eyes are her. There is on-site parking which is a major plus for New Orleans weddings. And a working elevator for those who might have trouble navigating the impressive front steps to the church.

It just occurred to me that St. Joseph is worth a Yelp (even though it may seem kind of weird to some). This is my favorite Catholic church to visit, because I'm one of those who likes to worship in serenity. I've gone to mass at St. Joseph since I was a child, and this church has always had a calming effect on me. The singers match the atmosphere of the structure almost perfectly with their crystal clear vocals. The priests who say mass here, do so in a way that very much compliments the atmosphere.I'm so drawn to this place that I've stopped in just to enjoy a nice moment of prayer. The fact that my Yelp rating for this soothing church is "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" kills me. LOL

St. Joseph's is most definitely the best church in New Orleans. With having convenient mass schedules, a great priest, and a beautifully decorated interior, I would recommend this to anyone. Now, 8:30 mass is great especially for those Saints games. Also you can park there so it's great for large ceremonies like weddings, funerals, etc. Father Tom is the best. He always has a little joke to help you start you week off on the right foot. And that hittah spits the best homilies. He always keeps me interested and relates the gospel to contemporary struggles. He always encourages getting to know your neighbors. And after mass the church offers some sweets and coffee e.g., cupcakes, cookies, brownies, etc., (the kids love it!) while Father Tom is meeting everyone. Even though the church makes you feel tiny, he always makes you feel at home. At the magnificent St. Joseph's, you have the ability to immerse yourself spiritually without distractions. This helps me particularly, because of how fast pace this world is. In addition to being a great escape, They do so much for the poor. I have personally witness many of those homeless and needy people all over Tulane ave. Ever since the rehab center has been in gear, I have noticed how much it has helped our community, but reminds me how much we all have to work to help one another. Keep up the good work everyone there! I would definitely recommend this to anyone Catholic or not!!

St. Joseph is truly the most beautiful sanctuary in all of New Orleans. In fact, it's the only true 'city parish' that you'll find in New Orleans. Wherever you live you'll find a welcome home and a warm embrace here. St. Joseph is THE Catholic Church you're looking for in New Orleans. Come and see for yourself.

The secretary & Priest here were most helpful, giving me info on being homeless. They also told me about the free lunch behind the church and gave me a free bus pass. May God bless Us everyone! So great to see the Love of God is still alive in 2024. Sometimes I feel like just another roaming Catholic, but here they truly treated me like the awesome family we are!

Beautiful church. My sister got married here. I don't like the location, but inside the bldg you forget about all that. There are workers during the weekday, and you can buy rosaries and all kinds of nice things.
