Newcomb Art Museum

Truly a lovely little museum. Honestly, the only thing that keeps it from being five stars is that it is a little museum, very little. Instead of having any sort of permanent display, there is a rotating exhibit that changes semi-regularly. The current one, on abolition and black identity, is extremely powerful and well worth seeing. That admission is free certainly doesn't hurt, and you can take a peek at the student sculpture garden on your way there. Anyone that goes hoping for exhibits on Newcomb pottery or other crafts may be rather disappointed however. The entrance hall does have a small ceramic exhibit and some beautiful stained glass windows, but in order to see anything else or learn much more about the program, you'll need to go across to the student commons and find the display cases on the third floor.

Love this art museum on Tulane University's undergraduate campus. Nestled Under the Oaks, it is a hidden treasure. Fun to pop in a see what exhibits are on display. Favorites over years have included a collection of Josephine Louise Newcomb's books, Newcomb Pottery, Flint is Family, KAWS and Shakespeare's First Folios. Newcomb Art Museum was the only site in Louisiana to exhibit the traveling Shakespeare display.H. Sophie Newcomb College was established in 1886 as the first coordinate college for women in the US. It educated young women in the sciences, physical education and the arts. Newcomb Pottery was created at Newcomb College and gained worldwide fame from 1895 to the 1940s. You can find Newcomb Pottery in museums across the US. Love the Tiffany stained glass windows and the displays of Newcomb Pottery in the lobby leading to the museum. Newcomb is still an amazing place for art students to learn skills like Pottery and glass blowing. Current exhibits include To Survive on This Shore which explores issues of gender, sexuality and community and Metamorphosis which has highlights from the permanent collection. Check out the online images or visit the museum.The museum is free to visit. Parking is available in the garage off Willow Street near Yulman Stadium. Check hours online. The museum is closed on Sundays.

Newcomb art museum is a small free museum on the Tulane Campus. If you're there during the day, make sure to park in visitor spots. Luckily my last visit was for a show opening, so parking was not an issue.The museum has a variety of galleries in the same building as the art school. Some of these galleries are not well signed so if you don't know where you're going, you have to ask...or like we did last night for the opening, follow the noise.I think there are special 4 exhibits happening at the moment in different rooms. And the permanent collection is not always on view. It's a good spot to check out a small installation or collection. Call before you go if you wish to see something specific.

I took my daughter here to check out B. Mike's exhibit. I am only attaching one photo because you need to see the art in person to appreciate it. Get over there asap. Really good exhibit and it is free.

I took my teen sons to this gallery/museum. We all loved it! The exhibits were curated beautifully and the theme was evident and strong. My son said, "I thought it would be a boring museum and it was so exciting and engaging!" Yes, it was.

I don't know a lot about art, but I love to look at it. I visited the Newcomb Art Gallery after seeing there was a show of old master's portraits at the gallery. It was well worth the visit. The gallery itself is small, 2 large rooms. The current exhibit was actually a combination of portrait work and engravings. Both were spectacular. If you visit, don't forget to check out the Tiffany stained glass windows on the entry wall. They are phenomenal.

Located on Tulane's campus near Broadway and Willow in the Art Building, this is an active campus art gallery. The exhibits are changed out every few months, and the curators show some pretty neat stuff. Since it's located on campus there isn't much parking so park on Audubon or Broadway. Closed on Mondays. Small and quiet. While you are there, make your way to the Carrol Gallery in a connected building to see student and faculty work.
