This small shop is located near the French Market, and the clothing items are beautiful and colorful. There's bags, jewelry, and other accessories too. The owner was very warm and nice. The prices are quite high, but it is understandable since there's nothing like this shop in the area. The prints, patterns, and colors of the clothing items are captivating, and the quality of the clothes are really high quality. Would recommend stopping by if you have time!!

Purchased an expensive ring, thinking they would at least be Sterling Silver..... No, the band turned a dreadful color after 2 weeks.

Good quality items but man they are kinda expensive. Was seeking out a cultural piece to wear to a friends church. Chatted with owner that shared history about items and the how they started the business. Very inviting and warm demeanor. Plenty of clothing, accessories and decor pieces for an interesting library or office. But when you start asking prices items were double or more in comparison to other places in the area. Again I'm not surprised because those exact West African items can't be found anywhere else. I'm definitely a fan just be prepared to part with your cash.

I visited this shop earlier today and purchased three items- incense $10, Shea butter $6.99, and sage $4.99, which is $21.98. At checkout, the woman used at calculator and said the price would be $35 with tax. Not realizing and trying to leave in time for something else, I paid the amount. I thought she was truthful, however, she was either purposefully deceptive or horrible at math, even with a calculator. Taking a look at my receipt (which is not itemized) at home, I now realize I was charged a 59% tax! Will she pay the entire 59% to the appropriate tax authorities? Be careful to watch what you are charged if you dare visit this shop.

Cute little shop tucked in between the other food and trinket places in New Orleans. Found what I needed right away. The staff was very friendly and helpful and my find was nice quality. Pop in if you happen to be near.

Wonderful fun loving people operate this store (a mother and her four sons). Our dealings with them were always easy going and featured laughs. If you are a returning customer they remember you. My bride bought a dress there but we returned later to look at our real goal: African masks. They maintain contacts in Senegal and their merchandise is regionally representative. I mention this because Zimbabwe (a large producer of masks) for instance does masks from African regions other than their own. When this happens some cultural authenticity is lost. These are not true ritualistic masks that would be used in traditional ceremonies, but rather commercial reproductions of the above mentioned, so the buyer does not have to worry about cultural denuding of the given region.Prices: If you're new to African masks I can tell you that "Motherland's" prices seem right on the mark. and the owner was willing to dicker a bit and this was done in a friendly fashion - your results may vary.Even if you don't buy anything stop in and ask about their art, you'll have a genuinely pleasant experience. (this is a copy of my Google review)

I tried to purchase a fan at this flea market location. The price was $17 I handed over $1 gold coins. The lady was like what is this we don't take that. She called for her associate and they said they don't take that kind of money. It is US printed money. If I would have paid in quarters maybe she would have taken it he money. IT IS MONEY USA PRINTED MONEY. If I could give no stars I would.

I love this shop! A wide variety of Genuine African masks. Also colorful Africa inspired clothing and caps. Beautiful handbags and accessories. Small Afro American sculptures. This is truly the gem of the market place. One of the places that I'll return to when I'm back in New Orleans.

Located in the French Market with a inside shop that carries into the outside corners of the shop. They sell soaps, hats, music, jewelry, art, clothing, purses, oils, instruments in regards to African/West Indian culture. Some days they will bargain with you and others days they may not. So do not go there expecting to talk a price down and it happens. Also, if you see a pattern and you want it, its better to go ahead and purchase because most likely it was only with that particular pattern.

I went to their other shop off of Decatur street. 1118 Decatur St. One Love African Art. There is no page for it so I am writing on this one. I thought I would try something new while visiting New Orleans. I ended up liking the style of a dress that pants to it. It was a hard buy for me because it was $46. I am a larger woman and most of the stuff in the shop would look better on a thinner girl. But my husband and I both thought it's our vacation, go ahead. I did not know there was a dressing room to try it on. So I thought I'll try it on back at the hotel, if it doesn't fit I'll just take it back. I was wrong. There was a no refund policy. It is not stated anywhere near the register and the guy checking us out did not say anything. The lady working that day said it was policy and mostly everyone knew about it. She did her best to try and find me something else. She even called her boss. So I ended up getting a hat, that looks like it's a $20, in exchange for the dress. Not fond of that either. I feel like this place takes advantage of out of town/state people and had a weird feeling about this place and I should have listed to myself. The woman said they get a lot of repeat customers that know about their policy. If they get so many repeat customers, then why was my $46 such a big deal that I couldn't have it back? So be warned, like what you buy cause there are no refunds in this place! Worst experience in New Orleans.
