Krewe du vieux always has creative throws: amulet, holy bagel, license plate...

They always pass a good time. Last year they dragged the mayor and a councilwoman a little too hard with some nasty sexist depictions, this year they dragged the men instead. The highlight for me is always the subkrewe Mishgas, no Jewish space lasers this year, simply the hole-ey bagel. The parade was preceded by a Palestine protest, it would have been funny to have the giant penis on the Mishgas float right behind them. (No shade to the protest, it's all about free speech. Peace to all). The theme was Artificial Ignorance, chat std made an appearance, and they even threw a little shade at Yelp. This is the silliest and best Mardi Gras parade imho. Love it.

Yow!!! Not being from here, Mardi Gras is a New tradition to me whose pulse and temperature is like no other in the states! And the crowds are dedicated "all in" watchers. I've decided of all Krewes my favorites are the walking tours. They do have floats but they are usually pulled by a mule. Then in between there are the theme followers and mini bands. What sets Krewe du Vieux apart from other walking Krewes is their talent in addressing the City's most controversial issues in "push the envelope" extremes and satisfies depicting all the emotions you never are allowed to say!!!!!

All the stars go the actual parade! This parade is typically a satirical look at politics and life, with a left leaning slant. The crowds are rambunctious and can get rowdy. -1 star for the carelessness of the crowds. I saw one guy climb a light pole to the top to get out of a fight. There is little security or police presence at this parade. People just take up as much space as possible with little care for their surroundings. But the parade is nice, and I am glad to have gone the couple of times I have. Please note that parking on the neutral ground (the grassy median) on Elysian Fields will get you a ticket.

Before there were the uptown, white social clubs of Comus and Rex, Mardi Gras was a French Quarter tradition of balls and street processions. Krewe du Vieux keeps this tradition alive with satire, political commentary and sexual subject matter. It's irreverent and lots of fun. The parade snakes its way through narrow French Quarter streets, bringing a sense of adventure and delighting with its R rated floats and scantily clad participants. The daft, fatuous and downright ridiculous have a happy home here. Other than Barkus, this is the parade where I laugh out loud the most. If you really want to be in on the fun, brush up on what's been going on politically in the city over the last year, and be willing to be spanked with a paddle.

One of my FAVORITE Mardi Gras parades. Sex/satire themed. What could go wrong? Always a good time to make new friends at this parade. Wouldn't miss it for the world.

If you are easily offended or don't do well with political satire, then do yourself a favor and avoid this parade like the plague. Thinking about bringing children to this parade? Well, stop thinking about it and make plans to take them to a more family-friendly parade because you'll have a lot of 'splainin' to do after they see this parade. This is a very popular parade and very lively. The floats are funny and creative and I loved the free-spirited people that were in the parade and attended this parade. Come to this parade with an open mind and be ready to have fun because it was quite entertaining. Along the parade routes, there are tailgates going on and people in Mardi Gras celebration mode. This parade takes place a couple weeks before the bigger celebrations, so it's a great way to kick-off all of the celebrations.

My first Mardi Gras Parade! Loved this one and have a feeling it will always hold a special place in my heart for being my first. To the uninitiated, it reminds me a hell of a lot of the Greenwich Village Halloween parade with its satirical floats, but of course better (and not corporate, which the GV parade seems to be more and more, from my viewing point... on the couch watching NY1 as I haven't actually been to that parade in well over a decade). Some of the political stuff went over my head, but I loved the "Occupy This" float (see my pic, which isn't very good, but like many of the floats, there's a phallus involved). And who doesn't agree that "Boobs for President" makes the most sense? Loved the Krewe of Mishugas (go Booty!) and there were all kinds of cool throws, not just beads but wooden nickels, pervy stickers, and other funny objects. Brassbadassery= awesome.I did have a couple MIss Crankypants moments that I tried to ignore... but I'm 5'1" (add an inch for the comfy heels I was wearing) and if you're a tall person, can't you NOT creep in front of me so that I can see? Whenever I see someone shorter than me, I move so they can see (to be fair, this probably amounts to children under 12 who should be standing in the front anyway, heh). There was a super cute baby on someone's shoulders who got a hella lot of throws. It dawned on me then that I need to borrow a baby sometime soon.

Krewe du Vieux is my favorite Mardi Gras parade. This statement should carry a lot of weight since I detest Mardi Gras.So why does a guy who hates Mardi Gras love Krewe du Vieux? Here's why:Krewe du Vieux is composed of several sub-krewes, each with there own version of the main theme. The parade is mainly a walking parade, with mule drawn floats which handmade and much smaller than traditional parades. The members walk and interact with the crowds. This can't be said for traditional parades where riders are sequestered on-board their lumbering float. Want to dance with the parade? Krewe du Vieux is all about crowd participation.Themes focus on local and national events with a strong satirical leaning. The parade is definitely adults only, so if you're offended easily, stay at home.My favorite group this year was the Krewe du Mishigas with their theme of Jewpacalypse. I may be a bit biased since Yelper Joshua B. was in the Krewe.I highly recommend this parade. We watched it on the corner of Elysian Fields and Royal which seemed to be a perfect spot.

After many years of wanting to come down to New Orleans to see a Carnival Parade during Mardi Gras, I was finally able to make it happen this year.Joi, yes THE Joi, informed me KDV is rowdy, blunt, full of personality and such a fun experience. Everyone was dressed up, loud, and positive energy. If you get offended easily then this parade is not for you.KDV doesn't follow the main parade route with all the bleachers and has more of raw edge to it.The various Krewes definitely were witty with their themes and if a phallus or sex toys bother you then drink more and get over it. I loved the environment of this parade and can't wait to come see it sometime in the future.
