My friends and I did the cocktail history tour for our last night in NOLA. Tour was amazing! Our tour guide Mike was super knowledgeable and entertaining while sharing his knowledge. He also had some great recommendations for food and places to get classic NOLA cocktails. Every place we went to had fabulous drinks and discovered some new ones I am already looking at the recipes for.

The Mrs. and I took the Doctor Gumbo food tours on Thursday, March 28th. We were part of the 1 p.m. tour. We arrived at the 3rd Block Depot Kitchen and Bar which was the designated meeting spot and starting point for our food journey. We were then seated at a large table in the back of the restaurant with the rest of our tour group. Our first dish was Gumbo. Up until this point we had been in NOLA for three days and the only Gumbo we had was a small sampling at Commander's Palace. Nate, our amazing tour guide proceeded to go over the history of Gumbo and local food culture in general. As someone who loves to cook and considers themselves to be a true foodie, Nate cleared up a lot of my own misconceptions about Cajun/Creole cuisine. The Gumbo from 3rd Block was pretty good. I liked the little bit of potato salad that was placed in the middle of the dish. My only complaint about the entire tour was that out of all the places in New Orleans to try Gumbo......it was the restaurant attached to the W Hotel? It actually soured the Gumbo experience for the Mrs. and I. After the Gumbo, our group walked over to the Pepper Palace and sampled some hot sauce. Then moved on to sample some incredible Po Boys, Boudin Balls, and a Muffuletta from NOLA Po Boys. I'm not a fan of catfish but the fried catfish Po Boy was really good. The fish wasn't bitter like other catfish I've had. From NOLA Po Boys we moved on to Leah's Pralines. I'm not sure what I was missing in life when it comes to Pralines. I think I just always thought of them as brittle but they were incredible. We then ended the tour with red beans and rice and Bananas Foster bread pudding. Overall, a great tour. Nate did a wonderful job at explaining some of the local history and let us know that the service industry in NOLA is generational. Highlighting Antoine's as an example.

Ben wisdom was a wonderful tour guide. He was super friendly and knowledgeable. We had four wonderful cocktails and about 5 or six food spots. We got some history, some humor, and some good food along the way. The group we were with was a interesting mix of people. It was about a three and a half hour tour. The places we hit, were not the places we went the rest of the week. So I like the mix of both.

We had a great time today on our food and cocktail history tour with Ben. Ben was fun and knowledgeable, and made everyone comfortable. We started out with gumbo and hurricanes at the Red Fish Grill on Bourbon Street. Both were tasty. We then stopped at the Pepper Palace to taste hot sauce, spices and salsa. This was ok - but I could have skipped this stop. Our third stop was at a Royal Praline candy shop where we got a free praline and a discount on our purchases. Our 4th stop was at the Napoleon House where we had a Pims No 1 cocktail, muffuletta sandwich and jambalaya. The sandwich and drink were delicious. Our 5th stop was at Peychauds where we had French 75 or Sazerac Cocktails in the courtyard. Our final stop was for blackberry bread pudding and brandy crustas to drink at the W. I enjoyed both. Ben shared interesting stories and historical facts at each of our locations. We liked trying drinks and foods that are tied to New Orleans culture and history, many of which we wouldn't have otherwise tried.

The Food and Cocktail history tour was absolutely spectacular from start to finish; if you're reading this, don't even finish; book now and finish reading this review after. When someone asks me about my trip to New Orleans, I tell them that one of my favorite things was the food, and there is no better way to experience it than this tour. Our guide as we embarked on this gastronomic adventure was Ben Wisdom. Ben was a terrific guide, very positive, upbeat, entertaining, and wicked knowledgeable. He also had stupendous recommendations for other places to check out while in NOLA.Our journey into the world of New Orleans cocktails and food started with a delicious bowl of Alligator Sausage and Seafood Gumbo and a Hurricane. These were absolute heaven, and the gumbo remained the best I've had in New Orleans! Throughout the tour, I was able to try other New Orleans culinary and alcoholic staples, all of which were of top-notch quality. While the Food and Cocktail History Tour is a little on the expensive side, you get a full belly of food and four full-sized cocktails! Not to mention the phenomenal guide who will take you on this journey! One bit of criticism: I found the stop and Pepper Palace a little out of place, considering this is a chain with 100 (or more) locations. I didn't quite see how it fit into the overall tour of New Orleans cuisine. But, I will not let it go unsaid that free samples are always appreciated, even more so when they're unlimited! We also got a bottle of hot sauce to take home with us as part of the tour!I have been recommending this tour to absolutely everyone, and here's me recommending it to you now.

All I can say is absolutely amazing! Beth was the best tour guide ever! The perfect balance of brains and personality. Every dish on the tour was absolutely divine! This is a tour I would definitely recommend and do again. It was worth every penny. Great way to experience authentic New Orleans cuisine. We even had Pralines and stopped by the Pepper Shop. Please don't eat before the tour! Save room for all the goodies you'll have to eat.

If you are staying an New Orleans you have to get the full food experience that doctor gumbo tours provides! I got a history lesson, met some fun people, and the food was incredible. I finally learned the difference between creole and Cajun and got to experience both!! It is worth every penny and really covered two meals for us. The tour is lengthy but it is flexible and you can bring to go drinks from place to place. :)

We did the cocktail history tour and I cannot recommend this tour more! It is a must do activity when visiting New Orleans. Our guide was very knowledgeable and patient even when all of us got three sheets to the wind lol I did actually pay attention to what she talked to us about at each stop and I would say definitely do this if you drink at all. New Orleans has a rich history in culture and their invention of some amazing cocktails is just part of it. The Pimm's Cup and Grasshopper were invented at the restaurants we tried them at. I would say if I did this again, I'd do the combo cocktail and food tour. Totally worth it!
