I stopped into Derby Tile and Pottery right at the end of the day. I wanted to pick up a little souvenir that team item of my trip. This was exactly the place. Have you ever seen the blue, tan, and white tiles that label the streets in New Orleans? This place offered numbers and letters to purchase individually. They also had tons of different tiles with decorations and pictures. I was drawn to the letter tiles as that is classic New Orleans to me. I choose a "J." The lady working asked if that was my initial. I told her yes and tried to guess my name. She wasn't successful but it was a fun game. She was friendly and had a great personality. I thoroughly enjoyed shopping there.

One of my favorite places in all of NOLA, Derby Tile boasts wonderful, finely-crafted, beautifully glazed tiles, cups, clocks and tableware handmade by Mark right in his shop. I love strolling on Magazine Street and I always drop in to marvel at the exquisite work on display here. You can purchase individual tiles or larger pieces that have been lovingly constructed, or order something special. I enjoy hearing Mark tell us the stories behind the different tiles and items in the shop, their symbolism and historical importance as well. I love New Orleans and this shop, and my favorite keepsake is the tile shown below from Derby.

A lovely little find on Magazine Street. The handmade tiles are beautifully crafted and I'm absolutely smitten with the tableware. The glazes are stunning - vibrant greens, yellows and rich earth tones -- it was hard to leave the shop! I only ended up purchasing a mug (I wasn't checking a bag on the flight home so couldn't commit to anything bigger) but they've got a nice selection of larger pieces like platters, pitchers, and other custom servingware. Knowing a little bit about pottery (and my feeble attempts to throw pots) makes me even more in awe of the quality at Derby.

What a find. New Orleans' own local artisan tile-makers producing unique wall tiles, bowls, and those street-name tiles you see all around Magazine Street and throughout the city.If you are looking for one-of-a-kind craftsmanship, interaction with artists who have a passion for their craft, and simply cool tile designs, this is it.Thank you Mark for the nice house number sign you created for me. Love it.

A great little find on Magazine street if you are a potterer or a collector. We visited the store in early April right before lunch and Mark Derby was busy working on a few pieces. The tiles are fabulous and I picked up one that has a bat on it and I plan to hang it up in my bathroom as soon as I finish painting. There are some bowls, some great candle holders, and of course tiles of all shapes and sizes. We have a wedding to attend in the Garden District in early October and i plan to revisit Derby Pottery and pick up some of his pieces that feature the fleur de lis.

Beautiful selection of tiles, that include Victorian inspired designs. When visiting New Orleans, I had often seen the shop, which is located on Magazine Street and finally made a vist. As I had wanted to tile my front porch step, using Victorian methods I have seen in my neihborhood back in San Francisco, I was hoping that I would use Derby tiles, as the designs are so unique and beautiful, however, after speaking with the owner, he noted that the tiles were for indoor, and not outdorr use, which is a pity, given the beauty of the designs.I still picked up several of the smaller squares, to use as paperweights.

A little pricy, but truly beautiful objects in this shop. I found the perfect present for a friend's mother here, and saw a bunch of other gorgeous tiles that I wouldn't mind having for myself. I'm hoping to pick up some smaller custom tiles when it comes time to tile my kitchen (though it may be years from now, lol).
