I've been to Ashé for a few things but always leave feeling I need to spend more time there. Fashions, Afrikan art or jewelry on sale, art gallery and meeting place; this is a real cultural center. Although the website is wrong on Yelp, I try to keep up with the Events Page https://www.ashenola.org/events. The staff is kind and knowledgeable. There's street parking and a lot. Most recently I was there for an art exhibit: In the Spirit of Black. Excellent. Varied artists, traditional dance, community elders and installations at the Ashé Theatre. Ashe Cultural Center is a true gem for the community and visitor. Stop by, stay a while, learn love or buy something and donate!

What does community look like in your city? What does community engagement feel like in your city? Who actually represents for the "culture" we always speak of or hear of in popular music? Where do you find culture, art, and history in your city? The Ashe Cultural Arts Center is setting the bar high!!! A necessity and true gem for all to cherish. In my 12 days in the Big Easy, I had the opportunity to watch a documentary on the Loving v. Virginia case here as well as pay homage to Shakor White and his amazing artwork. I even took my students to his art gallery in the French Quarters. Thank you to Rachel and the welcoming staff for helping me sort through the boutique dresses and jewelry that I ultimately bought for my mother back home in Texas. Ashe is unapologetically black yet so open to everyone of all creeds. Spread love, it's the NOLA way!!!

The YLC often uses this space for their general membership meetings, particularly the annual (or bi-annual, or whatever) project fair. That's exactly what took place at Ashe tonight, and therefore I had a chance to stop in and check it out again. It's a large, warehouse-feeling space with concrete floors, and they usually divide it into two halves. I talked to a woman who works there and learned that there's a boutique somewhere (it was on the other side of the divider) that's open from 10-6, and they often rent out the space for events. Arguably not the best neighborhood, but certainly a viable option for events, should you be in the process of finding a venue for your upcoming party. Since I gave them my business card, I'm apparently going to start getting "e-blasts" so will be up to date on what's going on at Ashe. If there's anything interesting, I'll certainly post it on the events page. Curious to find out what else goes on here. We shall see...

I was here for a community event and it's a lovely large space with good a/c on a really hot summer day. It is very warehouse-y. But doesn't feel industrial, if that makes sense. The room was packed the evening I was there so I didn't get a better sense of things. But I do know it's a HUGE improvement of the nothingness that used to embody this block.

Cool place. Home to a lot of pan-African events. Most cities have a place like this that serves as a cultural center, which is important. There is a cute boutique in this venue. I was there for a fashion show. I signed up for a membership and I'mLooking forward to more events here.

This building is really big. Very spacious in the inside. It is decorated really nice! New Orleans authenticity at its finest might I add! I came here for a dance class and boy it was really fun. What I live the most though, is that the building is actually being used for some real good purposes. It's not one of those big for nothing uber spacious place just collecting dust and not being used because it's so expensive to rent. I know some buildings that just sit and nothing is taking place. So to know it is being put to good use made me happy. There is all type of dance classes, and exercise classes that take place here. There is even a parking lot for those attending any events at the Ashe CAC. Definitely nice will try to be back again. I really enjoyed myself and is interested in a loy of events that's coming up in the community!

A gem of New Orleans. From Yelp Events to theater to performance art, and training, this place is a wonderful community center. There's a nice and large parking lot next door and you can grab a bite to eat before or after your event at one of the several nearby restaurants. There's only one bathroom, unless you count the weirdly placed port-o-let. The A/C turns on and off (loudly), which is annoying.

If you're ever in #NOLA, please visit the Ashé Cultural Arts Center, located in Central City, a neighborhood where historic residents are being aggressively displaced. (This seems to be a common theme in neighborhoods filled with black, brown, and/or folks with limited resources). I met Jamilah Y Peters-Muhammad, (affectionately known as Mama J in the community), at the screening of #katrinababies, where she led a meditation for the audience. Her calm and soothing demeanor drew me to her, and she invited me to #AsheNOLA. This BEAUTIFUL and VIBRANT space is captivating. It's an artist's dream and a novice's personal library. Much of the artwork was created by NOLA students. The staff are warm and welcoming, which adds to the aesthetic. We had the privilege of receiving a personal tour from the artist, writer, and director, Constance (featured in one of the photos). She made us feel like family, as she encouraged my 13yr old to continue creating art and practicing self care. I felt like I had known this beautiful woman all my life. Thank you to Constance, and the beautiful mother and gentleman at the front (whose names I can't recall right now) for your incredible hospitality. You don't have to be in NOLA to experience the amazing art. Visit their website: ashenola.com. Let's help keep this space thriving by making it a #nolatouristattraction. @ashécac #ashécac

Such a great community organization run by great people who are genuinely working to preserve true New Orleans culture. They highlight the cities cultural contributors in a variety of areas. I've been to a few lectures or talks they've held and most recently Art shows they've put up. Most recently the art of resistance-works of art by Lionel Milton. This is an organization we must keep supporting!
