Each tour is unique and customizable, so rather than diving into the specifics of the tour itself, I want to focus on Ms. Mikhala and her remarkable teaching approach. She is a licensed tour guide, a jazz performer, and educated in psychology--three roles that might seem unrelated but blend seamlessly into the experience she creates. She is not your typical "look at that pretty statue" kind of guide. Instead, she takes the rich and complex history of New Orleans and anchors it in raw, honest truth, peeling back the layers of sugarcoated narratives we so often receive. For descendants of enslaved people like myself, history can feel like a fragmented, distant thing. Traditional education barely scratches the surface of Black history, offering watered-down versions that leave out the full spectrum of our stories. Even in a city like New Orleans, where Black culture is so deeply embedded, we are often handed palatable, simplified narratives that are far removed from the truth. Ms. Mikhala doesn't shy away from the uncomfortable parts of history. She brings them to the forefront with sensitivity, honesty, and respect, delivering something raw and unfiltered that we deserve just as much as people of European descent deserve access to their unvarnished history. In three hours, Ms. Mikhala managed to give me more understanding, connection, and clarity than 12 years of formal education ever did. Her tours aren't just informative; they're transformative. They give voice to the stories that have been silenced or sanitized for far too long. As an African American, I walked away from her tour feeling more rooted in my history, more connected to my ancestors, and, in a way, more whole. It was healing in a way I didn't even know I needed.I cannot recommend her tours enough--they are not just for visitors to New Orleans but for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the true history of this city and the people who shaped it. Ms. Mikhala's work is a gift, and I'm grateful to have experienced it.

Ms. Mikhala was amazing. So well versed on the real history of New Orleans. Small tour, 4 of us total. Mikhala spent a good amount of time with us in Louis Armstrong Park, giving us a run down of the NOLA history, then that history of the park. Then we hopped into her van, where she took us on a short driving tour to Treme, followed by a walk down Bayou street. Stopped off at Cupcake Fairies- smelled amazing inside. So many tasty baked goods- we got a chicken salad sandwich. Then crossed the street to Community Book Center- also awesome! Left with three new books. Would definitely recommend this tour!!

Our group took the tour in Feb 24. Sadly, it was poorly grounded in historical or societal fact, but, was repetitive conjecture drawn from a mix of so-called "sources". An interesting conversation perhaps, not a well grounded or detailed tour. Disappointing!

Somehow stumbled across this tour and it was the highlight of our trip!!! It was powerfully educational, soulfully uplifting and a reminder that we must come together for change. Absolutely what I needed on my journey to becoming an improved version of myself. A friendly prompt for us to rethink how we show up in the world, and what we can do to strengthen community and heal together. Mikhala is so knowledgeable, courageous, curious, inspirational, entertaining, welcoming, warm, kind... I truly could go on and on. HIGHLY recommend this tour to all. I hope to come back again in the near future to bring friends, family and colleagues. In the meantime, I will continue to educate myself with the stories that are often left out of history as it will be a guiding light towards an equitable and just future.Thank you, thank you, thank you Mikhala!

The Singing is Praying: Sunday Walking tour is a must while in New Orleans. Mikhala Iverson brings truth, life & soul as she shares the history of New Orleans through song and spoken word on this truly unique walking tour of Treme, St Augustin Church, Congo Square, and Louis Armstrong Park. We had three young kiddos from 6-10yrs and they were able to keep up - but brought snacks and cold water. Recommend this tour for everyone along the melanin spectrum.

If you want to hear the real history of New Orleans, focusing on the people that built the city, and the indigineous that originally inhabited this collective grounds take this tour! Ms. Mikhala is a wealth of knowledge and presents it in a very compelling and vivid way that inspires, brings gravity to the atrocities commited to, and elevates the resilience and culture of African American people. We were moved by the history in this tour from music, architechture, land pollitics, to migration, Ms. Mikhala covers it. She could probably share for hours in depth on the many subjects covered. I loved hearing about the spiritual, musical, and artistic background of New Orleans. She is so warm, I want to be her friend and spend more time touring NO with her. We walked about Armstrong park, Congo Square, Treme neighborhoods, visited the Cupcake fairies, and witnessed a drum circle

Ooowee, this experience put it all on the table, and left room for deep healing! Mikhala is such a wise and knowledgeable guide, and a powerful storyteller. She moves with spirit as you take left and right turns to be with our ancestors and our humanity. Any time I know someone is visiting NOLA, I will send them to Mikhala's website and invite them into this journey of grappling with truth and our histories.

Loved the Black Heritage and Jazz tour by Mikhala. She guided us through the Black history of New Orleans with nuance, creativity, reverence, and realness. Learned so much and felt so much more connected to the land after. Days later the learnings and reflections from this tour are still sticking with me. A must see tour in Nola!
