Khmer market

Where most people have access to smart phones to practice comparison shopping on the go, my mom does it old school. Somehow she naturally memorizes and stays up to speed with current prices for beef, chicken, fish sauce, tomatoes, rice, etc. from an array of grocery markets within the area. (An art-form that all asian moms have perfected, I've observed.) So when we shop together, and she's giving me the run down of where I can get tamarind powder for 30 cents less than the market across the street.. or egg roll wraps for 1.39 instead of 1.99.. I listen intently and try to keep up.. But items and prices can become easily jumbled.. And when you're dealing with 30 or 10 or even 5 cent differences, my somewhat lazy, typical american consumer-trained brain can't differentiate. Sad to say but I fell far from the apple tree in this respect. Excuse my long story telling but we're getting to the meat of this review ummm....NOW. Prices for veggies have been getting increasingly more expensive as of late, which makes it necessary in this time of instability, for this girl, to roll up my sleeves and practice my penny pinching. A stocking of garlic used to go for 99 cents.. it's now a dollar something or more. But New Angkor, thank Buddha, has miraculously maintained the prices of months past... Garlic can is STILL be found for 99 cents here. Limes are 10 for a dollar. Kabocha squashes are 89 cents a pound. Frozen shrimp balls are 2.19!! Insane. Places like Viet Wah, Mekong or Uwajimaya sells these same brand name shrimp and fish balls for 3.99 or more. In my re-adopted quest to decrease my spendy habits, this is a like.....Whooooosh! That's the sound of relief, folks. Stress lessened and happy level upped. I have to appreciate that. Other info I can't find a good segue for: - Current owners have done a great job with their placement and organization of products as well as with packaging of vegetables. Facility is clean and aisles are clear. Everything looks fresh and appealing. No wilting cabbage leaves, no browned spots on the egg plants. Even my mom was impressed with the way they wrapped the wild water grass. - Don't be afraid of the sketchy looking people walking around outside. They're friendly enough. And the exterior may seem off-putting and run down...a result of prior years of urban decay...but businesses here are starting to bustle again, offering a good selection of consumer goods, and New Angkor is one of them. -Frozen shrimp were still the going rate of other places. 5.99/lb or 6.99/lb. For frozen shrimp I believe Samway has it priced a dollar or so cheaper. Special note: In one section of the store, they also rent out some space for a jewelry dealer where you can purchase traditional Khmer jewelry and I think jewelry from other parts of Southeast Asia as well. So you fellas looking to get in good for your lady...a bit of grocery shopping on her half, with an added purchase of something shiny as a gift may not hurt..Juuuust saying. One stop shop right here! :)

Store was close. Not sure if they are out of business or on vacation.

I believe their name has now changed. Typical local Asian grocer but so needed in the community. The area is seeing some revitalization aka gentrification and I hope they'll be able to withstand changes to the area. It's pretty large inside, having most things you need to cook your favorite Asian meals. One exciting thing (for me personally) is that they have twa kow - a Cambodian homemade sausage that is sour and fermented. This is the only place that has them. While there is a large Cambodian community in the PNW, there aren't very many places outside of your own home where you can find traditional plates or groceries. The people running the place have been there since inception, I believe. They used to have Thai and Chinese movies dubbed in Khmer for sale but I'm not so sure anymore. Occasionally they have hot foods and/or desserts. Even if you don't cook Asian food, please support your local and small mom/pop businesses!!

Great little market in White Center. Fresh vegetables, great deli food and a wide variety of hard to find Southeast Asian goodies. The owners are very friendly and are helpful if you need help finding an item or an explanation of what something is.I love being able to buy herbs such as Thai basil, rice paddy herb, culantro, etc by pound, and it's always so fresh!I'm a huge fan of their deli items as well from fried quail, bean cakes, coconut mochi, boneless stuffed chicken wings and durian sweet rice. You can also find pickled mango, pickled pig ear salad and a selection of other Cambodian street foods available. Come around 12pm for the best selection.+1 Vibe+1 Taste-1 Presentation+1 Service+1 Value

I can understand the complaints about these markets, but growing up with Asian supermarkets, you kinda have to understand what you're getting to. But honestly, who reviews supermarkets? They're just supermarkets and this one feels like a cultural center. That said, let me just throw some key points that make this market pretty great:- Tamarind Gooseberry candy: What the what? If you haven't had this get yourself a box. Candied tamarind, salt, lime, chili, and gooseberry. Got every flavor combo possible. - Beef skewers: They have these homemade fatty beef skewers and freeze them on a weekly basis. Kinda like viet lemon grass skewers. Pretty bomb- Homemade chili oil: local vendors sell these delicious fishy chili oil. It's a thing. - Lao beef jerkey: also homemade and localThere's tons of instore made products where you don't have to buy 50 ingredients just to use a tsp of each. It's pretty novel but has your typical veggies and herbs like galangal, keffir lime leaves, ginger, fish paste, etc.
