Last year my wife and I were cleaning house. I found an old cookie tin in the trash and pulled it out for recycling. Inside the tin was the saddest old Raggedy Ann doll. Not sure if my wife meant to throw the doll away, I figured that I would get it fixed up a little and surprise her. I let our daughter in on my plan, she would take the doll if her mom did not want it. There was no place in the Twin Cities that wanted my business, so I expanded my search and found Ye Olde Black Beade Doll Hospital. I called and spoke to the owner, Marchelle, and tried to explain what I wanted done, basically fix the hair. I recall being quoted $20, which I thought was very, almost too reasonable. Looking at the labor involved, I thought that she must not have understood what I wanted, so I sent her the doll with a little extra cash and a note asking her to make the repairs, keep what extra she found fair, and give the rest, if any, to a local charity. What we got back was/is a masterpiece, along with a 'treasure' to go with the doll. She also had some funds left over and was able to make contributions to local underprivileged kids. My wife could not believe that the doll we got back was her old childhood companion, and she keeps the doll in a special place above her desk. Hopefully, someday the doll can be passed to our daughter, and then to her future daughter. I purposely left some of the details a little vague for privacy. To summarize, the workmanship exceeded my wildest expectations, and the cost was very fair. Truly a very memorable, once-in-a-lifetime transaction.
