Is it special? Well, more nostalgic. They close a little early but the service is great. Good selection of bread here including sourdough with a wide range of baked treats and a few other things you might expect at a bakery. 5 stars for Hayward because it's a small town and it's the best around but don't expect this place to blow your mind.

We used to come here every fall for the blueberry scones. Unfortunately they changed the recipe and they are not the same. The cinnamon scones are reminiscent of what the blueberry used to be like, so unless they bring the original recipe back, these will have to do.

Some truly delicious items come from the Hayward Bakery, aka Firehouse Bakery and Deli. Among some of our favorites are the cranberry walnut bread, scones and cinnamon rolls. Seriously -- just walk inside. There are so many delicious items; it can be so hard to choose. And on our most recent trip, I was excited to see that cheese is a part of this small shop. (The "cheese" part may have been a part for a bit now; I only visit once a year and may have missed this on previous trips.)Anyway, in such a cheese-loving state as Wisconsin, having a cheese shop sounds awesome. And inside, I found that they have some cheese but mostly sandwiches. I mean, that works, I suppose. But please double down on your cheese. I want more! I ended up buying some curds that I have been enjoying ever since. Hayward Bakery has so many wonderful things to look at and even better to eat.

Defiantly the best bakery in Hayward but nothing out-standing. I thought the donuts were good. They are are large, fluffy and sweet. I like the cows especially. I had a cake pop and a day old brownie and thought they weren't good at all. It seems that a lot of the items they sell are not fresh. I went here a few days in a row and they had the cake pops out all of the days. On the first day I asked wether they would have the cake pops later too, they said they wouldn't be making new ones. However they stayed out for another few days, hence not fresh and I also feel they should be kept in a fridge. I also over heard them selling a bread that was two days old, to a women. Although I'm sure these items are ok, I just feel that bakeries are meant to serve fresh items.

It's sad that the Hayward Bakery & Cheese Shop is struggling. We were there last month about 10:30 a.m. and the door was locked, but saw a couple employees inside. There were items on the shelves, but nobody could get in unless you called the number posted on the window and then made an appointment. Who's going to wait for several hours for a cinnamon roll or loaf of bread? In 10 minutes time, we watched at least 20 people walk way disappointed/disgruntled. Hopefully the shop can hang on until better days. We've been shopping here every year for many years.

It's not the same. Somethings change in the breads are just not as good. We were just up there and ordered several different breads but they just weren't as good as they were a few years back. They're skipping on ingredients or something, for example the cinnamon raisin bread was missing the cinnamon and raisins unlike likelike it used to have. I really wish they would make the bread like they did a couple years ago, this used to be such a great place to go and we go there almost every weekend

I originally went to Hayward Bakery and Cheese Shop because I was headed home after a trip to Hayward and wanted to pick up something local for my office back home. The chocolate store further down the street was super packed and frenetic, so I decided on something at this store. There was a fair number of people inside, but the shelves and display cases seemed rather bare. It wasn't even that late in the day, but about 60% of their stock was gone. Hmmm...Ultimately, I got a loaf of cranberry bread, which was tasty and pretty big. But in terms of getting something that is local or special, I don't really think this is the place. They only had bread. To be perfectly honest, I should have gone to the chocolate store.

They have good pastry items and bread but the hours are sporadic and are closed on days when they say they are open with no notice other than a sign on the door. So disappointing.
