Great Hunan Chinese Restaurant

3.5 stars rounded up.Great Hunan was less than half a mile away from the Hampton Inn, and actually came in twice for dinner during my 5 days in Alexandria. Nothing against bar & grill type of food, but this AAPI Californian gal was craving some rice and veggies if you know what I mean (#smalltownvibes). Another reviewer wrote that they "are as authentic as you're going to find around here," which I agree with.My Chinese-American colleague was happy to see the owners are actually Chinese, and this was a sit-down restaurant rather than a buffet style. Party of 3 each time. We did not avail of any of the pre-determined Family Dinners, instead ordering a la carte. First visit, we shared hot and sour soup, tea, cashew shrimp, mixed vegetables with white sauce, chicken with vegetables and brown sauce, white rice, and house special fried rice (shrimp, beef, chicken, & pork). These were alright, enough for leftovers. Cashew shrimp was okay (meant to order walnut shrimp), not bad overall, similar textures for everything though.Second visit, we tried sweet and sour pork, shrimp lo mein, ma po tofu, kung pao chicken, spring rolls (can't remember if these were the veggie or meat filling), and white rice. I was semi-surprised the sweet and sour pork arrived separate from the sweet and sour sauce and was mostly pork except for one presumably canned pineapple chunk, a piece of onion, carrot, and a slice of green bell pepper as garnish. The spicier dishes such as the ma po tofu and the kung pao chicken were good, maybe due to the region the chef was from (Szechuan style). Also, we got the lo mein based on the photos since what the menu deemed "chow mein" looked more like chow fun. Leftovers again.Other menu items that caught my eye were the Mongolian Beef, Two Flavor Chicken (Snow Peas and General), Buddha's Delight, and Happy Family. Happy to support small family-owned local business especially in a smaller midwest town. Lake Country gets busy in the summertime for sure, but this mall spot still seemed a little sleepy/less-traveled.

Wonderful staff! We were there for lunch. Lovely atmosphere, clean & orderly, very helpful & friendly staff. I had the lunch special sesame chicken which came with fried rice, soup, won tons & tea. It all was so delicious! Definitely will be back the next time I'm in Alex! What I liked best about this place is they did not do a buffet! I can't tell how awful I think buffets are; nothing like doing a lot of things not well.

This has been a constant since it opened back in the 90s! I like the consistency in their food quality. I have not had a bad meal there that I can ever remember. We typically go for lunch dates, but also enjoy going for dinner - lunch gets busy, FYI. I normally get kung pao chicken or shrimp with vegetables because I like the clear sauce. The vegetables are nice and crunchy and the seasoning is not too salty, which I appreciate. The service is great and the prices are equally great. If you want a good meal for lunch or dinner, definitely check out this place! Now, if we could add some dim sum, that would be gold! Thank you Great Hunan for always being a great place to dine!

The best Chinese Restaurant in Alexandria. Trust me, don't waste your time and money trying the slop the China Buffet offers.The Hunan has great service, excellent food, great portions, and they're always busy which says a lot about a restaurant. Tim and Shirley are wonderful hosts.

We got there when when they opened, and they were slammed right off the bat. Still every employee was kind and every order was correct. The food was delicious and a perfect serving size.

I'm a truck driver, hungry after a long haul and too tired to cook. The woman that answered the phone was SO sweet. It's snowing right now and I knew it was asking a lot for her to deliver at the near by Pilot but once my bill hit above $50, she was happy to deliver. I'm not mad about it one bit. They deserve every dollar!!! Quick and friendly. A man delivered the food and greeted me with a smile and good vibes.The food!!! So so so good. We got a lot so ill just mention our favorites. Egg Foo Young, cheese wonton , fried veggie dumplings, the housemade sauces and the broccoli with garlic sauce! I'm saving this in my phone and stopping here whenever near. Also would like to let you know they are as authentic as you're going to find around here. Awesome sauce! Loved the food, left overs for daysThank you!

I come here frequently. Food is great and fresh. Employees are always welcoming and friendly. Very nice dining area and also great spot for take out.

Good food, fast and friendly service.The hot and sour soup was nice and spicy with lots of flavor. The Mongolian beef was tasty and spicy as well. The egg roll was a little lacking on the roast pork flavor but overall pretty good. Portion size was about right on the combo dinner, no leftovers, but I'm sure from looking at other diners that if I ordered ala carte that there would have been.The staff seated me right away and was very attentive.I will definitely be back the next time that I am in town.
