I recently saw a list of "best hot ham and roll" places on social media and South Milwaukee Sausage and Meats was on the list. Since I had never heard of them, I pulled up their page and saw a few things that piqued my interest beyond just being a place I hadn't tried yet. I stopped down over the weekend so I could check it out.The building isn't very large compared to other meat markets I've been to. The counter area only had room for maybe two employees at most and there was only one display case for non-frozen meats right by the counter with 6 of the 15 spots empty. I didn't see the root beer marinated ribs that I primarily wanted, but the polish sausage looked good and larger than a typical brat. I ended up picking up a couple of those. There was a large cooler off to the left of the counter with other non-frozen meat like ribs and whole chickens, but the variety of items in the two large freezers on the right of the building caught my eye. I saw tons of different kinds of brats (both chicken or pork), bulk sausage, and marinated chicken legs, thighs, and breasts. I grabbed a pack of Al Capone brats (pork sausage with marinara, genoa salami, pepperoni, mozzarella), sweet Italian sausages, cheddar brats, maple breakfast sausage, and Cajun marinated chicken legs. While checking out there's a small cooler of cheese and a stand with buns to your left. I didn't look too closely at the different cheeses, but the Wild Flour brat buns tempted me with how soft they felt. I ended up with two packs of those too.I haven't tried the maple breakfast sausage or the Cajun marinated chicken legs yet, but I have high hopes for those. I have tried all of the other brats/sausages I bought as well as the buns. The buns are fantastic. I'm not sure if Wild Flour is a local brand or if that's just what the label was calling that specific kind of bun, but I'd gladly get these again. They were just as soft as I thought they would be.The polish sausage was my favorite of the brats/sausages. Both the cheddar brat and Al Capone brat were good, but I didn't taste any of the marinara or cheese in the Al Capone brat so that aspect was slightly disappointing. The sweet Italian sausage was fine. I've always been kind of meh on Italian sausage so I don't mean "fine" as it wasn't good, it was just my least favorite of the four.

Yippeeee! The south side of Greater Milwaukee has a Sausage store again. It was a sad day when Adamczyk Closed, but happy times now that SMSM has opened. All the ingredient lists are simple meat and spices. The place smells like a Sausage shop should smell. It's clean, fresh and bright. This will be a regular weekly stop for me. I would like to see this place stay open for 90 Years.

So I live in S. Milwaukee and patronized the previous sausage guy that opened here. Grew up in Oak Creek and remember a busy main street. It even had a movie theater. Since Bucyrus Erie (CAT) closed and recently Everbrite is closing up shop S Milwaukee is struggling. I used to drive truck and every small town main street in America is dead except for Insurance agents, attorney's, a restaurant or two and maybe a thrift store, oh yea always a couple bars hang in there. Great tasting sausages! I bought many different flavors and all of them are much much better than anything commercial, especially Usingers. I was never really a fan of Usingers. I was a devoted Johnsonville sausage guy for typical Italian or Brats but any sausage I eat from here forward will be from SMSM. Polish, Hungarian, stuffed peppers, Italian meatballs all great unique flavors! It is hard to find well made mock chicken legs, that are not filled with fat, and theses are pretty good. Tuff getting a business like this rolling especially with costly perishable products that need constant turnover. Pay in cash so he avoids bank fees, every penny counts. Now lets keep him there by patronizing regularly!

Small shop, so don't go in expecting every cut of meat to be in that week. If you really need something in particular, call and they will be sure to bring it in for you when you need it. Yes, sausage is in the name, but it's our favorite place to buy chicken. It comes in later in the week and again, good to call ahead and have some reserved. The chicken is super fresh and tastes so much better than what you find in your standard grocery store. And they trim their meats like you would at home, super neat and clean. Also bought ribs one day when they were in and they were spectacular. We haven't tried the beef yet but will give that a go on a future trip. Can't believe this place has so few reviews. Give them a try.
