So while renting an VRBO on the south side of Milwaukee, We had limited selection within a close walking distance of places to acquire supplies. We came upon by chance the El Rey plaza.... This was a sleeper find. While it has many ethnic Mexican and south American foods....the deals are fantastic. The store is immaculately clean and the staff was helpful! The bakery is amazing with plenty of treats to entice you. There's even a small diner type area that prepares authentic Mexican foods. We would totally go back! Thanks for the yummy Churros and other bakery treats!

Excellent Mexican-American grocery with good produce and a butcher shop. There's a food counter inside which is both tasty and convenient. The parking lot isn't quite big enough, this is a popular place. Have you tried Mexican laundry soap and fabric softeners? Mexican household cleaning supplies? You should.

Did I take a wrong turn? A trip to the El Rey Plaza will transport you to Mexico. . .Employee directives communicated over the loud speaker in Spanish. You will need to use sign language to communicate what you would like from the deli. And the small food cart outside serves traditional corn on the cob with mayo and cotija cheese. I'm in Mexico. Pick up inexpensive fresh ingredients to make your favorite Mexican dishes at home, purchase tasty Bimbo bakery items and if you need a piñata for your party this is your place. Your trip would not be complete without a stop at the counter restaurant inside. The daily special aren't to be missed. The steak and fish tacos come highly recommended!Muy bien!

Ever since I've tried the iconic Los Tacos at Chelsea Market in New York, my taco search has always just been looking for something close to the ones in NY. I've tried multiple taco places in the area and this one my friends, from El Rey, hits the spot. This is the closest thing to the best tacos I've ever had, in fact, this is the best one I've had in a looong time.

So the heading on yelp says El Rey Plaza, but that's the plaza containing multiple shops including El Rey market, which it seems most of these reviews are about the grocery store. I'm also reviewing the grocery store.Good, well-laid-out, medium-sized market. Has a bakery/pastry shop and a butcher, but no tortillería unfortunately. Decent produce at decent prices, but not the biggest variety. Staff is friendly. Plenty of parking. Nice to combine a trip with the southeast Asian market in the same plaza.

I love to eat here at El Rey -- Taco Loco [Restaurant in Store]:) YuMMY!!The Steak Tacos with Corn Tortilla are Super Tasty! I like the Salsa with Chips that comes with every meal. You can learn a lot from this place, and I think it's actually very social. You can meet lots of great people. It's just as good as meeting someone at a Coffee Shop. People are just so friendly here!!!!There are so little places that you can meet new potential friends publicly now. This place develops us to a higher level of empathy. Thank you for being here El Rey! Thank you for being so lovely and kind!

Great market place with a variety of fresh fruits and veggies, some you wouldn't find in your traditional grocery stores. Service is friendly. Bakery items were good and endless. Nice selection of meats in the deli. Found banana leaves here which I've been looking for for a while to make an Indian dish so that was a win for me :) Another win, it's located very close by to my favorite taco truck. What more can I ask!?

I cannot believe it has taken me so long to visit El Rey, especially after I heard how amazing it is from everybody. Joe R and I came on a Sunday afternoon, and the parking lot was packed! I could sense that I was in for a real treat.....I set foot into the Supermercado and was immediately transported to a familiar far-away land.... was it Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, or Mexico??!!? It was incredible! It was grocery store heaven!!! I had to look at everything, it was all so familiar but I never new it was available to me in Milwaukee.... so many of my favorite things: plantain chips, yucca chips, fresh queso fresco, yucca, plantains, avocados that are not of the Hass variety, Jumex fruit nectars, Cafe Yaucono, TOSTONES!!!!! (I really, really, REALLY love tostones) I wanted to purchase about 75% of the frozen foods items, but had to control myself due to lack of freezer space.Let's talk about prices:El Rey is insanely reasonable, particularly with produce, spices/seasonings, house made items such as salsa and guacamole, rice, beans, and canned vegetables. Needless to say, I went a little crazy. But where else are you going to find orange, yellow, red, and green bell peppers for $0.39/pound or seasonings for $0.99???!?There is so much wonderfulness packed into this relatively small store. Everything on display is neat and perfectly positioned (think Sendik's, where there are no gaps between items on the shelf and it is arranged like no one ever shops there). El Rey was busy when I was there; the only way they can keep everything looking so perfect is if they are magical fairies or elves that keep everything tidy and clean. There is also great Spanish music playing in the background that made me want to dance up and down the aisles. We picked up a variety of food from the hot deli bar to take home and eat. We had a pack of chicken tamales - which were AWESOME! $10 for 10 tamales; 2 gigantic chicken chimichangas, that were stuffed with seasoned chicken and Chihuahua cheese - also awesome; and one mega size steak burrito. I think the burrito was my favorite, this thing was HUGE. The steak was seasoned, there was lots of cheese, rice, and beans inside, everything about it was perfect. I cannot recommend it enough!!! And it was great that they offered these food items in chicken, pork, and steak options. We also got a pound of Puerto Rican rice - I had to eat around the large chunks of ham but it was so delicious! Even the olives in it were good :D***Moral of my story****El Rey's is fantastic! Inexpensive foods that are truly authentic and it is a fun place to shop. The employees were all very friendly (and everyone speaks English, don't worry!). If you are having any type of fiesta, enjoy Hispanic/Latin American fare, or looking to try something new, come here to shop!!!I will definitely be returning :D

Words cannot express how much I adore El Rey. They have it all - cheap, fresh produce, friendly people, the most amazing deli and fresh salsa. My favorite part of shopping here is the in house cafe. Everything is crazy cheap, very authentic and delicious. Today I had a carne al pastor torta. Holy Sh**! It arrived in less than 5 minutes, the bun overflowing with tasty, tasty al pastor, lettuce, tomatoes and big chunks of creamy avocado.Normally I can only finish half of a torta, because they are really big but today's was extra delicious and I polished the whole thing off, much to the dismay of my husband who had hoped for leftovers. Too bad for you!Did I mention this sandwich masterpiece was less than $5? I love you El Rey.
