El Rey is by far one of my favorite grocery spot in the Milwaukee area. You can have fresh churro freshly made every morning. Choose between vanilla, strawberry or cinnamon filled. There is also an option to just get plain churro. Coffee wise, you can get Santo Domingo cafe, cafe crema from Puerto Rico, both very smooth coffee. Salami, Goya juices of all types. I mean this place is fantastic

I was going to do lunch and some shopping here because they have the Taco Loco restaurant in the store and I could do both in one spot. I started with lunch from the restaurant which was ok food wise but the service was very slow and I spent over an hour doing lunch, 43 minutes from sit down to food on my table was horrible. Really only two reasons I go to the Mexican grocery store is I like carnitas because you can buy it by the pound which I did for tacos at home or a quesadilla. The second reason is the fresh meat department because you can find pre seasoned meats and fajita meats ready to cook. The produce department is always better than Pigly Wigly and for certain dishes like a good soup you can find bones etc to make the stock and the meats and veggies to finish the soup so it's one stop. This location has a restaurant, bakery, produce, fresh meat, pre cooked hot and cold items, fresh sides etc etc. I usually go to the 35th st location but it's been a while because the other big Mexican store in town has a huge fantastic deli that is hard to beat but El Ray was my first when I moved here. It's funny that across the street is a Mexican food truck and maybe they know how slow the restaurant is and it's intentional ???

Low Carb Tamales??? After being gone for 5 years yesterday I stopped in El Rey and bought a package of pork tamales. I was so excited to have them that the higher price (now over 10.00) I still purchased them. I was anxious that I opened the packaging in the parking lot to have a couple for the hour drive home. The first thing I noticed was that they were much smaller now. Think of a large taquito. The next thing I noticed was that they were not wrapped in corn husk, they were wrapped in paper. When I unwrapped ome, I noticed the lack of masa. The masa that was there was paper thin. I must have grabbed the low carb tamales? These tamales are embarrassing. I guess I will have to make my own this year to share for Christmas because I certainly cannot share these. This will be the last package of tamales I buy from El Ray. I hope they don't try to serve these in their restuarant.

Horrible food at the restaurant. I didnt even want to give it a 1 star. Wait staff is so inattentive and we had to ask multiple times to multiple people just to get what you want. Three times to get a glass of water really? I have been to this restaurant many times before and the food and people have always been great but today, it was horrible.Upon sitting down the server didnt even acknowledge us sitting at the table. We thought about going up to the counter after waiting 10 minutes. When the server asked what we wanted to drink we asked for Horchata, but they didnt sell it there. That blew me away since I've always had it there previously. If you ask for a soda, be specific otherwise you will get a bottled which is an upcharge. Please ask the guest what type of soda bottle or fountain dont assume. When she brought bottles back we said no we wanted the fountain drinks and she just stared at us like we had 6 heads....I was so mad I said let me guess you are you out of that as well? The food was so cold, I ordered the burrito suizo with melted cheese on top, with al pastor meat inside. I've had it before and it always good to eat, expect for today. The rice and beans were cold and the cheese was not even melted. Thats the best part. The cheese was as cold as the sodas....at this point I was scared to take a bite of the burrito. The meat inside was so over cooked and way too spicy that it tasted disgusting. I spit it out and couldn't eat any of the food. The server never came back to see how we were doing. I went to pay and they asked how it was and I said it was horrible explauned all the issues from food to service hoping they at least acknowledge the issues and nope. ...all waa said was "oh", and walked away. Not coming back here again.

Looking for authentic, reasonably priced and tasty Mexican food, this cafe is a must visit. The staff is always friendly. The dining area clean and comfortable. Stopped in for lunch and the place is packed. Enjoyed the Bistec con Rajas.

I recently visited El Rey on 52nd and Oklahoma to purchase tamales. I was disappointed in the product. They are smaller than they used to be and the corn husk wrap is not what it used to be either! Not much masa was used as well.. I had purchased some pork and chicken tamales and both choices were not what I am accustomed to buying as in the past. Terrible!

This is my first time buying tamales from here . And all I can say is gross. The labels ready tamales wrapped on a corn husk . When I open the package and took out a tamale ,they were wrapped in a waxy paper . It had no flavor , and looked like they used good die on the mass. I can say false advertising, and not very good at all.
