We loved visiting this little place. It was wonderfully stocked with a great variety. I picked up multiple trimmings for some quiche and mac and cheese. Perfect sizes and a great price. I'm giving a 5 rating but am putting a disclaimer. This is for the cheese and wonderful support staff that answered questions and helped us out. Not for any tours as it was Saturday and no cheese making was going on. This was a great little stop and really is some wonderful cheese. We plan on ordering some for Christmas gifts this year. My family made sure to mention you need to get some pictures next to the holding tanks. The cow pattern is too cute!

When you think "Wisconsin" you automagically think "Cheese!" and this factory store says it loudly and clearly!I first learned of this award-winning cheesemaker when it was featured on an episode of Wisconsin Public Television's series, "Wisconsin Foodie". I decided then and there I had to find this factory. It's about a 2-1/2 hour drive from my house, straight across the state on Wisconsin Highway 60. (West of Sauk City, follow Cty B to Mill Road to the store. It's signed.) My first attempt got me here about 15 minutes after the store closed. :( My second attempt got me here in plenty of time! The variety of cheeses available here makes it difficult to choose. Regular dairy cheese, along with sheep and goat milk cheeses are here. (There are some specialty cheeses available from other makers, such as bleu cheese.) I opted for my favorites, Colby and Swiss, an took a chance on a block of garlic cheddar. You'll also find a wide selection of accessories. I purchased a wire cheese slicer with dual widths, thick and thin. There are refrigerator magnets, t-shirts and logo ball caps.Large windows allow you to watch cheese making in progress, as long as you're there early in the day. When you arrive late in the afternoon, as I did, you'll see sparkling clean, stainless steel cheese making equipment. If you arrive after closing time, you can find their product in Plain at the Shell station and at Straka Meats in Plain. (You should visit Straka Meats, anyway, for another gastronomical adventure!)Oh, yes. The garlic cheddar was delicious!

I ordered 5 gift baskets with note cards as Christmas gifts totaling nearly $300. 1 of the gift baskets was delivered substantially late and the food was spoiled. None of the baskets included a note card to our friends did not know who sent them.I called once and emailed twice to Cedar Grove requesting a refund for the basket that was delivered late and a discount on the balance for the missing note cards. Cedar Grove never returned my phone call or emails. Apparently once they have your money . . they don't care.

This place is an amazing place off the beaten path that is where all the local stores buy their fresh cheese! On my family trip my mom wanted to go to where actual cheese is made and was very disappointed after we stopped by the 'touristy' cheese sales shops. She spoke to one of the cheese buyers at MouseHouse And he recommended this location, which was about 45 minutes from their shop. Cedar Grove is where he buys his cheese for resale, and so we jumped in the car and headed into the country for a look at this gem! Their facility includes a little retail shop that doubles as an awards display room! Walls full of competition medals and ribbons are a fantastic way to promote their brand, and their shop is right next door to their prepping and creating kitchen! In the mornings you can see cheese artisans create the cheese that you end up buying, super cool and informative! I'm glad we stopped by, too bad we couldn't do a tour, but if you have time you should do that too! I ended up buying their pizza flavor cheese curd and a variety of cheddar.

This is really more of a small shop attached to a legit cheese factory than what you might think of when you hear the phrase "cheese shop." They describe their cheeses as "traditional and specialty" - which, in my opinion is pretty accurate. They have very tasty cheddars, Swiss (one of my favorites), colby, farmers, muenster, and the like, but also have specialty flavors (smoked gouda...nomnomnomnom) and small batches of cheesy goodness (am hoping to pick up some of their buffalo mozzarella to test this week), all without any pretention. These are not Wall Street executives "finding a simpler way of life" by making overwrought, special, special snowflake, fra-fra - they're legit folks who work hard to make damn good cheese, whether it's in a traditional vein or more novel sort (Faarko whatnow?).I have to admit, I don't really care for their block mozzarella or provolone, but looking at their website, perhaps they aren't making these any more. The rubbery texture and flavor just isn't what I prefer or what I'm used to getting made fresh in New England or New York. It's fine for cooking, but eating fresh was a disappointment.Cheeses are all growth-hormone and GMO free, if that's important to you. And, of course, they have curd, fresh, regularly. They make both traditional curd and other flavors, all worth trying. If you're not from the area: there are signs directing you to the Cedar Grove shop, but it does feel a bit like you're driving out on a farm road. Don't worry...fresh, tasty, cheesy goodness awaits! They also offer cheese via mail-order, which I can confirm works well, particularly during the cooler months of the year (or in northern climates, of course). The best care package I ever got when away at school came from them - and was appreciated by dozens of cheese loving friends. Lurve this place!

Cedar Grove has outstanding cheese. We have ordered cheese from them for many years. Great specialty cheeses, flavorful cheddar and marbled colby and organic choices. Produced in an environmentally excellent cheese factory that does exceptionally good work.

I had a problem with a jar of the olive and pimento spread-cheese. The jar was so generously filled that it overflowed and made a sticky mess on the outside of the lid.I called, and the problem was taken care of immediately. The owner actually dropped off a replacement jar and a gift jar as well to our home in Madison! What a delicious product (hard to get because stores don't carry it due to its cost, BUT it is worth it!) What a nice company.Margo RedmondMadison, WIsconsin

Amazing little cheese factory, with a retail store and cheese tasting at request. They make several styles of cheese, including the traditional hand make cheddar. And if you're there during the day, you can watch them make the cheese and get a tour.
