Mexicali Street Tacos was empty when I visited on a recent weeknight. It's a very small taco shop on the edge of North Park with a few stools available for countertop seating. The menu was pretty simple with six types of tacos, six different burritos, three mujitas, flautas, carne asada chips, carne asada fries and a grilled potato to choose from. The street sized tacos were all priced the same except for the camaron which was $1.25 more.I ordered one of each of the following on a corn tortilla... al pastor, carne asada, and chicken. The last was probably the best of the three as the meat was in large chunks. The pork and beef were minced too fine for me and could have used more flavor. The lady owner who staffed the kitchen and register was nice and provided fast service. Overall, I gave a three star rating for my dining experience at Mexicali Street Tacos.

WHAT A TASTY SURPRISE!That HANDMADE TORTILLA is something special!! My food goal is to always hunt for those hidden gem items in the most unexpected places. It doesn't have to be my favorite place or serve the best meals but it has to have something unique, tasty, and hyping your cravings for more. Today's Taco Tuesday adventure landed me to this super tiny six's bar stool kitchen for some "handmade tortilla" Mexi-Cali street tacos. Who eats tacos before an intense workout? I DO!CARNE ASADA - steak, cabbage, pico de gala, guac. and pinto beans. From their side bar added lime, sautéed purple onions, and a dabble of hot sauce. The steak was ok, kind of flavorless (not much seasoning or smoky flavor) but the pinto beans, guac, and purple onions help lift the taco to have more flavor. But the true star of any of the tacos on the menu is the HANDMADE TORTILLA (FLOUR). CHICKEN - chicken, cabbage, pico de gala, guac. and pinto beans. From their side bar added lime, sautéed purple onions, and a dabble of hot sauce. The chicken was white meat and it was decent with some moisture. The chicken was slightly seasoned but it was very light I can't put the flavor into words at the moment. Still the taco fixings was average tasting. Again, best part of the taco was the handmade tortilla. The HANDMADE TORTILLA alone gets a five star and it's own section in the review. I don't know why others thought otherwise, "undercooked" is an understatement - it's fresh so it will have a different texture. "Get the tortilla right"?!?! It was perfectly executed during MY visit! Although nothing special about the average taco fillings - what sets the tacos apart from other average tacos is their handmade tortilla made fresh daily and they were street taco size! I must give credit where credit is due! It held up well without any tears or leakage from the fillings, nice texture - you can tell the dough was kneaded well, and they were soft liked feathered pillows. When a tortilla is that good I can eat it plain and by itself. I've only ran into two places where I can say "that's a really good tortilla" and they are two blocks from each other - this place is one of them. Will definitely be back when the tortilla cravings hit.Until the next review.

Just left here with my husband on 5/3/2022. First off you don't get individual menus to take a minute and look over. The only menu is on the revolving digital board. So you of have to skim quickly before it moves on to the next screen. Next loved the chips and salsa! It came pretty quickly. Our food finally came (birria tacos, birria quesadilla, and carne asado tacos). The order was completely mixed up and there was a lot of confusion amongst the staff. The birria tacos and birria quesadillas look VERY similar rather than looking/tasting like a taco and a quesadilla. The Birria Tacos didn't have cheese but they were still okay. The birria quesadilla lacked enough cheese but were still okay. The carne asada tacos were really dry. After our orders were properly served to us the guy from the front (assuming hes a possible owner/manager) asked us if we wanted more chips & salsa and we said yes! We never received our chips and salsa. My husband wanted an horchata, and asked three different before receiving it. Each one answered him, or walked over to the horchata container, and then walked away to do something else. Mind you we were maybe one of 2 out of 5 customers in the whole restaurant. The other 3 were sitting at the bar with beers. The last person finally walkover and was genuinely sweet! She grabbed and delivered the horchata within a minute. Overall we feel the place can have good potential, but these are just some tweaks that we suggest get changed. The family atmosphere was absolutely wonderful and the decor was beautiful!

Four words: Mexicali Hand made tortillasPros: First time I came here I just wanted 2 tacos, ended up ordering 2 more. This hole in the wall gem might have the best fish tacos I've ever had. Fish is perfectly fried. I get it with everything on it. Chipotle sauce is flavorful and always add a side of the red or green salsa for a spicy kick. Definitely the new standard when it comes to fish tacos. Now the 2nd time around I tried the carbs asada mulita and the al pastor mulita and they too did not disappoint as they both were nicely snuggled with the tortillas. Meats were juicy and tender. Al pastor had more flavor.I can't wait to explore their menu. I've met the owner twice and she makes all the food herself. Very sweet lady with a great story. I hope more people get the time to enjoy this tiny local treasure.Cons: None

These tacos were excellent, especially with their homemade corn tortillas. As a frequent traveler to Mexico, I know a thing or two about a good taco. I tried the soyrizo (2), carne asada, and al pastor - All three delicious. Also had a cheese quesadilla - because i'm a fatty and never know when to stop. The chef making the tacos was really nice - I think his name was Roy but it's possible that his name doesn't even start with an "R". Can't wait to go back here
