Really excited to see and say that this place is still open. I was introduced to this place in the early 2000s when I worked at a nearby manufacturing facility. Many of my coworkers would pitch in money and this delicious chicken would show up in styrofoam trays with a bunch of fixings (beans, rice, salad, tortillas, roasted peppers, and pickled onions). After I became aware of this place, it then became impossible to drive by without smelling the mouthwatering aroma of smoke from the grill drifting over 7th street whenever they were open. Well, I hate to say it, but my employment ran its course at that manufacturing facility, and I ended up moving too far for this to be convenient. So, a few times over the years, I would drive here if I was in the neighborhood, but it would appear closed. Whether this was due to operating hours or them being completely out of business, I could not tell. Needless to say, I was bummed. So fast forward a decade and a half later and I was very surprised to hear from my former coworker that Sergio El Pollo was indeed still open and that they were, in fact, still participating in their ritual pollo gobbling. So...I made my way over the other day, and even though they were open, it was just an epic fail. The man working didn't seem interested in in engaging me to take my order, and when I finally pushed the issue, I learned they were cash only. I had come unprepared. A loss on both our parts. But today was going to be the day. I wanted menudo, as I am on a menudoquest to find the best white menudo (menudo blanco) in Phoenix, and I had noticed on my failed trip that Sergio had what I was looking for. So I arrived and they appeared to be closed again, but I had to be sure, and they were indeed open. Today there was a friendlier older gentleman and a super friendly woman working. The older gentleman took my order and since I hadn't eaten all day, I got 1/2 a pollo, and a bowl of menudo. He took my order and went to work, but didn't take my money, so I was a little confused. So after a while I just sat down. They brought the chicken after a minute and it was just as delicious and flavorful as I remembered. Their marinade, coupled with the smoke from the grill just makes this chicken excellent. If I'm being a super critic, I could only say there are some dry bites, but otherwise this pollo is unique and awesome. Tortillas were soft and delicious. The roasted chile, spicy but flavorful, rice and beans were yummy as I remembered. My favorite part today was the bowl of menudo. Barely any hominy (mostly tripas) and a big ol honkin pig knee right in the center. I wasn't expecting that! The lady asked if I wanted pan (bread) or tortillas and I chose pan. She brought me a nice soft roll. I would have preferred it toasted, but I wasn't sure if that was an option here and I didn't want to ruin my experience by pressing any issues. Anyways, the broth was super excellent, a rich almost buttery flavor, and tripas in every bite. The knee was a task unto itself so I saved that for last and it proved to be a fun and delicious undertaking. The knee made my hands very sticky, but there were some real good cartilage and all those succulent bits in there. The lady seemed very interested in making sure I was happy and I was indeed. I'd really have to recommend this place for both their delicious chicken and their menudo, if you're into that. Pass on KFC and keep this place up and running, so I have a place to go!!!!!

Well, I think I found my Mexican grilled chicken spot in AZ................I had this place bookmarked and decided to come down today. This style of chicken is my favorite and I am always on the lookout for places that cook it this way over charcoal. I looked at some of the Yelp pictures and noticed that they had/have a promotion for Wednesdays (Buy one whole chicken, get half a chicken gratis). I drove on down to check it out. I walked inside, placed my order for the Wednesday special and a few minutes later, I was handed a heavy bag and was on my way. Here is how it was.......Chicken- Wow! Fantastic chicken! Reminded me of some of my SD joints. I opened the container and there was a massive mound of chicken! 3 breasts, 3 wings (one was like a half wing), 3 thighs and 3 legs. This pile of chicken smelled fantastic. I bit into a wing first and was instantly comforted by the charcoal, smoky taste of the grilled chicken. It was fantastic! This was after a 30 minute ride in the car, too. Still hot, still moist, and still delicious! The legs were really large, the breasts were nice and big and even the thighs were tasty (I usually don't like or eat the thighs)! I scarfed down almost a whole chicken and saved a few of the breasts for lunch tomorrow!Sides- I'm doing low carb so I didn't really dive into these. I did sample half a tortilla, a bite of rice and some of the salsa. All 3 were delicious. I tossed the beans (pinto beans, kind of watery) and saved the rice for my son and the salsa for later on tonight. They also pack in 2 grilled jalapenos which were hot and spicy and a "side salad" which was a few pieces of lettuce and a tomato...random lol!The lady running the joint was very friendly and smiling the whole time. This whole thing only cost $14.90! Yup....on Wednesdays, less than $15 bucks gets you 12 pieces of chicken, rice, beans, tortillas and salsa. One hell of a deal! I am sad that starting next week, I will not have Wednesdays off any more. If you ARE off on Wednesdays, and enjoy this type of chicken, it is well worth the drive down here! I will be back soon enough!

The review by Carlos B. almost says it all. I would just add that on a hot day, don't come here looking to cool down. The AC does not run very cold - but it's not uncomfortable. The spanish music station would be okay too if it weren't for all the static. The 1/4 chicken is delicious and comes with pickled onions, iceberg lettuce, 1 little slice of tomato, a dixie cup of rice, a dixie cup of beans, and some of the delicious salsa. Also a pan fired serrano chile for those who like it a little hotter! And of course, a small pile of corn tortillas. That and a bottled water came to $7.05. A pretty good deal! I'll definitely be back.

A buddy of mine suggested we go here.... Thanks, Paul! This is a tiny, bright yellow, dump of a building in a sketchy neighborhood and the menu is pretty narrowly focused on chicken.... but oh, man is the food good! The chicken is grilled over an open flame, you peel the meat off the bone yourself, roll it into a tortilla and cover it with the awesome sauce that they keep in squeeze bottles.... It's actually what people refer to when the say "Awesome Sauce".... I'm sure of it.

This place ok but clearly We need to come back when its busier cause the chicken was very dry, like its been siting for a while. The flavor was nice but the chicken killed it. Maybe if I got a full chicken it would be better but that was just too much chicken for one person. I got the 1/4 portion which is enough for 1 person and they give, rice, beans, tortillas, lettuce, tomatoes, pickled onions and hot sauce. When you put everything together it tasted alright but it was just dry chicken.

The best chicken ever. I wish I would have come in sooner. It's a lot of food for what you pay for. The beans were yummy, and I'm not normally a fan of beans. The salsa was also to die for. This will become a regular spot for us! The owners were very friendly and helpful as well.

By far the Best grill chicken in town! Don't be discouraged by the building looks. The chicken will speak for itself. The salsa is mild and has a delicious tomato flavor, it is perfect for sensitive taste buds. Wednesday is my favorite day because of the "buy 1 get half" deal.
