No BBQ sauce here. Left: watery vinegary sauce that is too runny to put on a bun. Right: what they gave me when I asked for BBQ sauce.

Whitt's Barbecue is a Nashville, Tennessee area chain of barbecue places that have been around since the seventies, 1978 to be exact.I was in Hermitage, Tennessee and when I saw the familiar name, I figured that this would be dinner. The building itself doesn't scream opulence, but hey, it's barbecue and there is nothing fancy about barbecue, but barbecue is a culinary wonder. The staff here were friendly and the food was good. I went with the pork and was overall pleased with my meal.I would definitely recommend this particular location of Whitt's Barbecue. Go check it out for yourself.

Good, juicy BBQ pork sandwiches for a fair price ($5.05). $2 off pork sammys on Wed. Wings are good also. Friendly staff. Support a local biz that's been around for decades.

You would think that good honest barbecue would be easy to find in the south, especially in the Tennessee / Kentucky region. We have yet to find anything in the Nashville area that really rises to our level of expectations. Our expectations though where barbecue is concerned are pretty high.Whitt's overall we found to be above average when compared to the last few places we have tried, but only average overall. They are a take out only, which we knew going in, but they would be well served to put a picnic table out front for those of us on the go who don't want to eat in the car.I have always held to the premise that in good barbecue the meat should be able to stand on its own. The sauce most people drench their barbecue in is usually there to mask mediocre meat.Whitt's doesn't have a traditional sauce and the cup of vinegar dip they will give you on request is served on the side (as it should be). We took some of the meat off of the sandwich and it was actually pretty decent. You could taste the smoke and the meat was tender and in chunks (not chopped to oblivion and drenched in sauce). There were a couple reasons we had to give them three stars instead of the four they might have deserved. First was a lack of knowledge by the staff. When I asked a couple basic questions (like what wood the meat was smoked over ) the server had no clue. The kitchen staff was three feet from him but I guess it was too much trouble to turn around and ask.The second was the dry turkey. We thought the sandwiches were overall pretty decent. They were topped however with way too much vinegar slaw making the meat difficult to discern. The prices were decent and the service, while lacking knowledge of their product was friendly. We will more than likely stop by again as we have yet to find better barbecue close to us. An average product is acceptable if it's the only good cue we can find close to us.We will be visiting a few of the more notable establishments this spring so maybe we will find the type of cue that right now we have to drive 2 hours to Owensboro Kentucky to procure.

Pretty good and cheap. I am so confused as to why they don't include BBQ sauce! They do include a weird watery vinegary sauce that is not very tasty, and too runny to put on a bun. I asked for some BBQ sauce last time and I got something red and sour that I think they call Buffalo sauce. Its so strange they have everything but what you would actually expect! I always bring the food home and add my own BBQ sauce.

This is the best bbq in the world. The staff shows true passion in the food they serve which is all freshly prepared daily. This is the finest hickory smoked Carolina style bbq that's ever been made truly awesome. Also their loaded baked potatoes are literally to die for. It isn't just the bbq that stands out at this place they also have world class sides including in my personal opinion the most exclusive and tastiest potato salad recipe in the south. I also love how helpful and friendly the workers are there as they will do anything to fulfill your bbq needs as well as offer you tips on buying to help save you a buck as customer satisfaction is clearly their number 1 goal at this establishment.

This is good southern barbecue meets fast food. Excellent pulled pork / beef / turkey barbecue, on a typical fast food bun. By default it comes with mayonaise, cole slaw, and pickles on the burger (so be sure to ask for those to be omitted if you don't like them).I had the pulled pork. It was juicy and tasty. The beef was good, but a bit dry. Service was quite fast, and there is a drive through.Note: No seating available at this location, so this is To-Go only. They have very minimal choice of sides (slaw, baked beans, or potato chips). Not particularly healthy. But still quite tasty.

I've had Whitts several times over the years and it is always good. They offer pork and turkey barbecue, ribs, and baked potatoes. Sides are potato salad, baked beans, slaw and chips. All sides are good, although not the best I've ever had. I pretty much only like the slaw on the sandwich and would not eat it by itself. It is definitely a vinegar based slaw and has no mayonnaise/dressing or carrots like you find in some slaws. On Wednesdays they have a family pack special which includes a pound of pork barbecue, a pint of a side item, and a pack of buns for $9.99. Not bad considering we can make 4 meals out of it. This particular location is to-go only. They are closed on Sundays and close at 8pm nightly so plan accordingly.

Hole in the wall type place with decent take-out bbq pulled meat on a bun, and supposedly pretty good baked potato too. Tried he beef sandwich and it was a bit dry. The pork sandwich was more juicy and tasty and both were great as a quick lunch sitting in the car parked on their parking lot. The baked beans was good, a little on the sweet side the way I like it. Good quick and cheap lunch right after visiting the Hermitage, home of President Andrew Jackson.Too bad it was served on a foam cup with a plastic lid -- the lid is an unnecessary waste (single-use, 5-minute life item) if you eat right at the parking lot while the spoon scraping against the foam cup makes me cringe.I can't give it more than 3 star because the food was just decent, and there was little choice by way of sandwich, platter, and sides.

Rated only 4 stars because it's carryout only so we have to eat in the car or take home to eat. The pulled pork plate is excellent. Comes with two sides and a piece of corn bread. Also pickles. This is North Carolina style so the sauce on the side is a vinegar type sauce but yummy. The baked beans are especially good---really baked not just out of a can. The slaw is delicious. Try it out!!!
