I was super excited to try this place for the oysters specifically. However, I felt like they had a little smell that fresh oysters don't normally have. I asked if the waiter knew if they were live or not but he said oh no, don't worry they aren't.....to me that just said a lot about the place. They don't educate their staff on the freshness and quality customers look for in oysters. Very fresh oysters should tense up when lemon juice is squeezed on them. Or the waiter should know when they are delivered and shucked at minimum.Anyway, the ambiance was ok, it wasn't any place I'd die to go again. Just seems dated and like it could be pepped up a little more. The server was nice, he tried hard to take care of us and he deserves credit for that. Won't be returning, too many good places to try in Memphis.

Okay this is a week old. But as usual a 10 out of 10 . Great service very attentive staff . The crab bisque is one of the best things in Memphis . At one time , long ago , they had king crab legs. My wife a crab an expert says the best she has ever had . She should know from Florida to Memphis I think that she is number uno for taste and texture. A cracker crab aficionado. If only they would bring back supremo king crab to Memphis. One can only dream , Come on Half Shell bring back the King!!

We decided to take our adventure to The Half Shell. Neither one of us had been in years, and it was a change up from where we usually go. The restaurant is easy to find. It's in the shopping center with FedEx Office and parking is in the area. There is an 18% gratuity here on all tabs after a certain time. With many establishments, it begins late afternoon and into the evening, roughly in the window of 15-18%. It makes sense because of how busy evenings get, and it ensures that every server doesn't go home empty-handed. I also like that this is posted before you even have a seat, so there are no surprises. I imagine it works well if you're on a date to avoid the silent given judgement whilst signing your merchant copy receipt. side note: restrooms passedUpon entry, it was steady but not crowded. We got to sit in a booth. There was space in the restaurant, but it still felt weirdly snug. I couldn't put my finger on it, but after looking around we noticed there were a LOT of tables throughout. The menu has many seafood options, hence the name, but they do offer other things if you aren't in the mood for seafood. Our server was friendly and attentive. He recommended the watermelon Tokyo tea, so that was what we ended up getting. It wasn't bad, and it seemed pretty balanced. It wasn't drowning in alcohol nor heavily dependent on outside ingredients. I haven't watched enough Bar Rescue to be an armchair connoisseur, but we all know when a drink is too sweet, too strong, too sour, etc.We both decided on tacos. She got the blackened fish tacos and I got the shrimp tacos. The tacos come with a cup of gumbo, but I opted for fries instead. Once you've had authentic gumbo, there is no comparison. I did have a biased spoonful, and immediately thought of who said the roux is a must. The gumbo wasn't awful. It was just bland. The coleslaw on the tacos was really good! The shrimp themselves could've used a little seasoning, they were a nice size and not overcooked. The fish tacos were also good. The fish was juicy, and I liked that neither set of tacos were dry.It is a little pricey, but it also depends on what you want. Prepare to spend around $20 individually.I'll give this one a rating: explore new waters. It's good to try different places. This was a cool change up from our usual hangout, and you don't find a lot of places that have good fish tacos.

Quality he's decreased sisignificantly since my last. fish tastes store bought and breaded. Many items removed from venue, prices have gone up and 18% gratuity is added to all checks. Very disappointed and this will be my last time visiting the Half Shell.

The gumbo is horrible. The roux is burnt and leaves a nasty after taste. This was not fresh. I opted to eat some frozen food after smelling and tasting it. They have the nerve to charge a to go fee plus gratuity on a cup of gumbo which cost $8. Soul Fish Cafe has some good gumbo just didn't want to drive there was hoping this would be good. Will not make that mistake again!!

The food was good. I loved the oysters and the stuffed potato and catfish. Everything was good. The server was really nice and attentive and I liked the music they played here. The reviews almost scared me off but I'm glad I gave it a chance.
