" Nice Small City Museum "We went to the Madrid Historical Museum and had a nice time looking through the information about the small city of New Madrid. There's a 15-minute introductory film, and then exhibits dedicated to the history of the area. There are also Tour guides to answer your questions around the Museum,

A small museum in downtown New Madrid about 3 miles off the interstate. The museum itself has a 15 minute film and then exhibits devoted to Native Americans, the great 1811-12 earthquakes, the civil war and general town history and artifacts since then. Fortunately when the earthquakes occurred there was not many people living in this region and it was before technology. These are 2 things missing that would provide background and documentation to make an interesting story and museum. For $5 it is worth a quick pit stop if traveling through, a definite must if living in the region. A great walkway with viewing platform juts out from the levee for a great view of the Mississippi river next door.

Great little local museum. My husband is a geophysicist and used to do field work in the area, so we stopped by here on our way home from visiting family for Thanksgiving. There's a 15-minute introductory film, and then exhibits dedicated to the history of the area, including but not limited to the earthquake. The lady at the desk was also very helpful and informative, and seemed to be passionate about the museum itself, which was delightful. It's very small, but worth the quick stop.

Nice little museum. I stopped to learn about the great earthquake in the area and I was not disappointed. Also, I learned about the civil war in the area and the Trail of Tears, and, the early French explorers.I highly recommend you pull off of I-55 like I did and go to see this museum. Also, you can stretch your legs and go up on the levee and see the Mississippi River. And the man working there was very friendly and informative.

This place is an absolute unexpected pleasure! Tucked away in a small corner of Missouri along the Mississippi River. Great little gift shop in a relatively small museum; but artfully done, locally accurate, and at the time of my visit a great curator/guide. Well done video presentations, nice examples of local history and culture. Will be my primary example of a great small town museum.

Great place to learn about the history and science of the New Madrid earthquakes! Well presented and easy to understand. The museum also presents the Native American Mississippian culture of the area and the story of the Civil War as fought along this stretch of the Mississippi. Local history plays a role as well with an interesting array of local antiques. Definitely recommend visiting!

Excellent curator. Small museum - but lots of detail and lots of interesting stuff. Seriously - give yourself an hour and take the jaunt into town. After - walk across the street onto the observation pier. Learned a lot about the Mounds, Battle at Island #10 and earthquakes - plus some additional fun stuff about the town itself.
