Mrs Girlees Soul Food

I am so sad I never wrote a review for this place before today. What an oversight on my part. I had some of the best food I've ever eaten in my life out of Jimmie's kitchens. Everything was great. Cooked with love, care, and tons of fatty flavor. It was an old school cafeteria style, walk down the line, choose what you want from the daily menu, kinda place. Selections change daily, but some staples were always available. You could always count on getting attitude or laughs from the folks behind the line depending on the moment in time. I didn't care which it was, I was just happy to be here. Your ass better be ready when it's time or you will catch six layers of disdain coming at you. I stuck out like a sore thumb every time I came, but I loved it. It generally got the attention of Mrs. Leach and she was always so sweet to ask me how I was. The entire family made sure I was taken care of. It was almost as if they were looking out for me. This is a giant loss for the City of Memphis. This woman's contribution to the Soul Food in Memphis is second to none in my opinion. Her old place, Melanie's opened when I was nine years old! These places are disappearing at rapid speed and being replace with nothing. There is a limited time for true Memphis Soul Food, so you better find some fast!Place come and go, but this one stung a bit when I read it this morning. Always packed and amazing for soul food searchers. This restaurant closed its doors 12/20/24. Lovely locally owned and full of family oriented life. Farewell!

OMG! You absolutely must eat here if you live in memphis. This is the most delicious food I've had. Bakes chicken is moist, potatoes is juice, everything is so well seasoned. Business is family owned. Black owned. Dad was original Memphis sanitation worker. Love it

Came here last fall during a weekend road trip. We had looked up best fried chicken in Memphis and found Ms Girlees on the list. A definite no frills, hole-in-the-wall kind of place, but they make some KILLER food.I had the meatloaf, good old fashioned, classic meatloaf. It was amazingly good. Tasted just like home (but better). No fancy ingredients - I wouldn't be surprised if there was a tube of saltine crackers in it just like my mama used to do - because this meatloaf was home-y and comforting. I loved it!Mashed potatoes - mmmm, butter!Fried Chicken - this is my husband's area of expertise. He really enjoyed it! Both the meat and breading was very flavorful.Yams - this is a sweet version, not overly nutty, maybe brown sugar-y? Pretty good stuff!Collard greens - salty but good! Braised with ham, so the flavor was awesome.Peach cobbler was yummy too! At the time we went, there was no inside dining and they followed COVID guidelines which I appreciated! I'm sure that's probably changed by now. The employees were super friendly. We liked this place!

Yesterday was my first time eating Girlees since last year & they did not disappoint. I got the smothered chicken, rice, greens & corn muffins. The chicken was so tender and seasoned well. The serve is always good!

Awesome food, great people...You gotta go. A way to experience Memphis forrea. Suggest the great southern claassicsl!!!

They have some of the best soul food in Memphis Tennessee I swear I eat there one or two times a week .
