We stopped 700 miles into our 1000 mile journey at Winona, MS and immediately consulted yelp for where to dine, looking to avoid chains and fast food. About 5 miles from the highway through a very rural area, we found McAnerneys, a modest but homey restaurant definitely off the beaten path. The menu was simple with steaks and catfish and a few daily specials. My companion and I both had the small ribeye (which was not small), baked potato and salad. The ribeye was substantial in thickness and size (yeah, yeah, that's what she said - I know you were all thinking it) but modestly priced with simple, homespun sides. We had no room for the buttermilk pie, but it sure sounded good. This was worth the trek off course for some real food. The owners were very warm and appreciative of our visit. Worth going out of your way for.

This is a little off the beaten path but I was looking something different. Our steaks were very good the salad bar was clean and fresh.

Consistently great food and service tucked away in McCarley in a nondescript metal building. You can't get a better steak anywhere.

Casual place with rustic, country atmosphere. Best to make reservations to make sure you get a table. Nice people and friendly homey atmosphere. There is a huge blackboard on the back wall with specials. The salad bar is nice, baby greens, fruit and vegetables. Dressing were not impressive, heavy and thick old fashioned artery cloggers. I would have liked some sort of vinaigrette. The filet was a delicious and tender piece of meat, cooked perfectly. This is the best steak that I have had in Mississippi. The potato was huge and fluffy with County Crock spread. They do offer sour cream. I would have liked real butter. Next time, I will get green onions on my salad plate and save them for my potato. I don't know if they don't have bread, or we missed ordering it, I would have liked rolls or bread. When I made my reservation, they put us at a small table, when we got there, they changed us to the end of a long table of a party that would be there later in the evening. We had to look at Mullins written on the table, I didn't like feeling like a step-child. Overall, if the meat is most important thing to you, this is the place to go.

The catfish is really good, depending on these conditions:1. you get fish freshly dumped in the buffet.2. employees respond to your requests to refill the empty fish containers in the buffet.3. you're able to trip the two blue-haired ladies running to cut you off in the buffet line. The deserts are "ok" to the taste and extremely overpriced.

The service was great! Everyone was so friendly. We had the mozzarella sticks for an appetizer. They were homemade and delicious. My husband said that his Ribeye was one of the best he's ever had. My filet was cooked perfect and the onion rings were amazing. We will definitely be going again. And hopefully often!

This is as close to "fine dining" as you will get in the Winona area -- well worth the 5 minute drive to McCarley. The food is outstanding, and the chef loves to experiment with sauces, etc. for the steaks and seafood. The only drawback is it is only open on Thurs., Fri., and Sat. evenings.
