Big John's Bar-B-Q

My fiancée drug me out to Hohenwald to go camping for our anniversary. Woefully unprepared, we stopped at Walmart to grab some provisions and asked our cashier for good local food.No lie, she recommended Subway. Frustrated (and my phone not getting any Internet) we began to head back to the campsite when we passed this restaurant and decided to stop in, glad to be able to avoid fast food.Thank goodness we did! The barbecue was made to order and we watched the flames go up and smoke the food right there in front of us. Without a doubt, some of the best barbecue I've ever had. The sides left something to be desired but weeks later, we joke about traveling the hour and a half to get more of that barbecue.

It's a sign of the times that even small town BBQ spots are wildly overcharging. I ordered the "Large" BBQ sandwich and as you can see the wimpy portion of meat doesn't even extend outside the regular sized hamburger bun. I like their sideways chip cut style of fries, never had them before, and the baked beans are some of the best I've ever had. Actually the beans were the best thing in the meal by far. BBQ sauce was rather bland, and nothing special about the pulled pork. The drinks are overpriced and not very good (I had sweet tea and lemonade). I'll also say the service is hardly what you expect in a small town, downright unfriendly. They didn't call out my number and when I was pretty sure my food was on the counter I politely asked if it was mine and they oddly gave me an attitude about it. Bathroom was clean (towards the end of their lunch rush) which is a plus. I don't know, I guess I'd support this place over the fast food restaurants in the area, but eating here made me kinda sad to be honest. That even small town businesses in America are losing their heart and soul.

Amazing food, great service, I recommend the nachos and tonight I'm going back for the ribs!

This place was interesting. It is the only BBQ within like 50 miles of Hohenwald. I called just to make sure they were open. They were. It was a Thursday. There were not a lot of people there. All the BBQ and sides are made to order. The okra is hot! The BBQ is ok. They do not have brisket which was a little disappointing. But everything else was good. They have tea, lemonade, or Pepsi products. Their sauce is ok. It tastes like regular BBQ sauce. All meals are served with 2 sides and a piece of Texas toast, only toasted on one side? (This must be a TN thing?)Anyway, food was decent and service was ok. Restaurant is definitely dated and needs upgrades. All of the bench seats are completely ripped which makes it uncomfortable to sit. We switched seats like 4 times because of this.Staff is really nice and works hard. It is what it is for a small town BBQ joint. There really isn't much else around.

I'll try it again.. was visiting friends and thought I'd try the pulled pork.. was subpar along with the potato salad and yummy white beans.. Spicy cheese sticks tasted like a frozen product, wish they were made in house plus I didn't get any marinara

Good flavor, small portion sizes. Wished for quite a bit more meat. Barbecued beans were good (but then of course barbecued beans always are!). Slaw is vinegary - FYI, if you like that. Very simple & unpretentious atmosphere. Kids' BBQ sandwiches were average. Overall pretty decent. Best BBQ we've found in this area is Schaeffer's in Summertown.

I told my wife before we went in that you cant go wrong with BBQ in small town Tennessee. Well sir, you sure can. Mediocre meal served with uncaring attitude.

Very good barbecue. I got the sandwich with coleslaw on it. Was very good. Service is fairly quick. Love the loaded baked potatoes

Pretty good I guess but it's all we got so...... except the bbq truck in town both good do your research about the sides.

This was delicious! We were on the Trace and took a detour for lunch. Great BBQ sauce! We got a pulled chicken sandwich (pleasantly surprised that it was all white meat) and a pulled pork sandwich. Both were delicious. We even bought a couple of bottles of their sauce before leaving!
