Beacon Restaurant

I moved to Oxford Sept. 2018. During the winter months I meet friends here on Friday mornings at 7 for our Old Mans breakfast. Our group usually consists of 5 folks. Age ranges from 58 to 20. The Beacon is nothing fancy. It's been around for almost 60 years. The wait staff is efficient and friendly. I've been called honey, darling, dear, baby and hello stranger when I missed a few weeks! Lots of familiar faces every time I visit the Beacon. It's not unusual to see college students eating breakfast there as well. Im a creature of habit and order 2 eggs, sausage, grits and toast. I enjoy their breakfast. If you want something different than what's on the menu they can probably make it. The biscuit and gravy is good too. Your coffee cup will never go empty. I make a good breakfast myself and the Beacons breakfast rivals mine. . Give it a try.

We sat for a good 10-15 min with the server saying she'd be right with us but then passed us by about 10 times. Meanwhile the table who came in after us already had coffee and drinks. We waited some more and grabbed the menus to be ready to order. When she walked by the 11th time I said politely "excuse we haven't been served." She rudely said "I know! There's only 3 of us" and walked off. She then comes by and takes our drink order with no apology. Another older lady comes over and says to her I checked the cameras and no one had been here longer than 5 minutes so you're good! And the server walked off. WTH?? So you have time to go look at cameras but not serve your customers? Doubt that you have cameras and you looked at them because we definitely sat longer than 5 minutes. I'm not an impatient person but bad service is so unacceptable. A simple apology goes a long way. The biscuits were legit and bacon crispy. Too bad their service is awful and rude. That's not the southern hospitality we get in MS! I remember when the Beacon was great with friendly service. Those days are gone.

The food is good and reasonably priced, but they are not dependable when it comes to hours of service. They say breakfast is served until 11am, but all too frequently they stop serving earlier. You really can't count on much here.

My mother who is an Ole Miss alum has taken me here for lunch twice while she was visiting. Said they came here all the time back in her day (the late 70s). I heard this is one of the oldest still-operating restaurants here.Atmosphere is very laidback- a seat yourself, no frills kinda place. Mom insisted I order the hamburger steak, which they are apparently famous for, and I was not disappointed. The first time I had it, it was perfectly cooked and I wanted to lick the plate clean with all that gravy cause it was that good. Sides (cornbread, cabbage, greens, mashed potatoes & more gravy) were also yummy- all standard Southern "low to the pot" style of cooking. Second time I had it, I ordered fries with it instead. Deducted a star because both the hamburger steak & fries were dry & overcooked, and they didn't give me enough gravy so I had to order more. Deducted another star because the confederate flags all over the walls made me uncomfortable & I'm white so I can't imagine how anyone who isn't would feel... That being said, I'm Mississippi born 'n raised and it's sad to say that's par for the course in a long-standing Mom & Pop diner like this in a college town where the mascot is the Rebels and for more than a hundred years that was the Rebel flag. It's an old school place set in their ways and that's the vibe I got from the very start. Regardless of the decor, it has stood the test of time for a reason, as the loyal regulars who keep coming back for more prove.

Upon entering, an extremely rude woman asked how many. We told her, she slammed a pen down, said put your name in the list and go wait outside. I stepped back in to ask how long. She rudely goes I have no idea and please leave as I don't have room for you to stand here. We certainly left. The entire facility. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to treat someone like that and I will never enter this establishment again. It was not our first time either.

Decent food, but workers have a awful attitude ruin your experience. Also takes forever to get your food. Place is good once a year.

Great down home breakfast! Love it and its wait staff, She is not fancy or pretentious like the BBB across the street, and that us part of her charm!

Food was good and service was good. Went before a football game. Lovely hospitable atmosphere. Great breakfast.

Got a sausage biscuit from here. If you're going to charge almost $4.00 for a sausage biscuit it should take more than 3 bites to eat it.

This place has always been one of my favorite restaurants in Oxford. My mom loved this place before she passed away. I have tried to carry on the tradition with my children, however because of being from a small town and the issues that come along with it I couldn't even take my son for breakfast without the most rudest waitress loudly stating she was not waiting on us. The sad thing is this hasn't happened only 1 time. I assumed previously it was just busy and someone else had to wait our table every time because the waitress whos section we were in was overwhelmed. So unprofessional but more so not classy on her part! I will never walk through the doors of this place ever again!
