Thieneman's Greenhouse is one of the best greenhouses I have been to and the best one in Louisville. They have a wide variety of tropical and subtropical plants that I covet. I have found Thai basil, ground orchid, spineless cacti, ginger plant AND a huge collection of heirloom tomatoes, exotic hot and mild peppers as well as many, many varieties of thyme and other herbs. The people there are all very knowledgeable and helpful. And a green house visit is not just for those warm spring, summer months, it does wonders to pick up my mood in those gray, wintery months. They also have gardening classes, too!

"Ohhh, it's too early to get up on a Saturday," she complained and pulled the covers back up. But it was a sunny morning in mid-March and she knew that there were seeds already sprouted in the greenhouses. Salad. If she planted today she'd be able to harvest fresh lettuce and spinach just steps from her back door in about six weeks. Thienemans is worth the drive. One step inside the warm greenhouses is as good as a trip to Acapulco in February (well, not really) and warms your very bones. The March greenhouses are a good way to get a jump start but be sure to come back in April when the heirloom tomatoes and the famous "tomato-man" is there to advise you. And, as always, put your tomato plants in the ground on Derby Day. It's a Louisville garden rule.

I am in love with Thienemans. Walking through their gardens and plant displays feels like a Chicago botanical garden's branch has popped up in Louisville. They carry an incredible variety of annuals, perennials and herbs. The staff is relaxed and helpful, and the garden kitty is sweet. I only wish that my gardening budget matched the inspiration I get from this place! Plus, they have chervil.

Giving 2 stars because of the herbs selection. I've never seen such a huge selection anywhere else, ever. However I was very upset by the customer service. I was not acknowledged in any way by the ppl sitting there as I came in. After perusing & having some questions, I stood there in front of 3 ladies for a bit several times & finally said "excuse me" nicely & plaintively before they stopped gossiping (based on their convo it really was gossip). They kept their responses to my questions ("is there a tray to put all the herbs on?" & "how do I know prices if they aren't marked? Is there a system?") quite chill and gruff. I had to argue with myself to stay as I'm new to louisville & need to find regular, good places to go for my hobbies &c. Its not easy to find tropical exotics. I almost put my herbs & plants back & walked out at least 5 times. I felt very unwelcome, highly uncomfortable & bothersome to these ladies- one of whom stated she is the owner. I asked if a lot of ppl shop here as I was the only one for over an hour. She told me "yes. it's just slow now". I've not gone into a place of business & felt like this before. And the fact that it was 3 people in "sales" pointedly ignoring me was even worse. The gardener was very sweet but told me I had to ask one of those ladies any questions. A lot of plants in the succulents greenhouse weren't priced. I went there looking for ferns- maidenhair, ostrich, bc their website stated they had them. They had none. I'm not sure I'll go back. There are other nurseries that can get me some off the irregular plants I like (I had to leave mine behind, adopted to good homes when we moved) so I'll have to think about it. I'm still just really upset at the absolute & unnecessary rudeness at this nursery. You get better customer service to the Nth degree at home depot's plants department.
