The food was incredible. The best fried chicken we had while visiting. The greens tasted like a good home cooked meal. My wife also got the baked pasta, oh my, what flavor!.

Do yourself a favor, GO!! It's like going to grandma's house. Green beans are NOT from a can, best Mac salad ever, Mac n cheese, and I'm picky, omg, that chicken! I hear the greens and meatloaf are fantastic too! Very welcoming employees. I'm just lucky it's only a short walk from my house!

The food here has been good in the past, but lately it's not up to par, overly salted, canned green beans with no seasoning other than salt, the chicken is good, the staff is very unfriendly, they act like they wish you weren't bothering them.

This is basic soul food, but at $1 per item, you can't really beat the price.I wandered into Southern Express Soul Food last week after finding myself in Old Louisville, starving for lunch. It's a basic storefront on Oak Street, and the interior is pretty sparse too. But I've found that some of the most tasty places with small staffs opt to spend more time on their food than their decorations -- and I can get behind that. I made my way through the line, which reminded me of a cafeteria.I told the clerk that I would like two pieces of fried fish, cornbread, mac and cheese and greens -- a lunch that set me back a whopping $5. The fish was fried to order, which I appreciated. The rest of my selections were in trays along the line, and the clerk filled a to-go container for me.I was worried that with the $1 price tag Southern Express wouldn't take cards, but they do. Now on to how everything tasted. The fish wasn't catfish. I wish I had asked what type of fish it was. It came out in long thin strips. It was some type of white fish. I liked that the breading was crisp with great flavor; it wasn't soggy like I've found with other fried fish. The cornbread was definitely on the crumbly side. It's a more savory rather than sweet cornbread but still good. The mac was full of comforting, cheesy goodness. And the greens were my favorite. The guy behind me in line ordered three servings of greens -- that's it. At the time I thought that that was a sign that I had chosen wisely, and I was right. These were full of balanced bitterness and sweetness.Even with a few people ahead of me in line, it didn't take me longer than five minutes to order, pay and get my food. If you're in a rush, hankering for soul food and especially if you are down on funds, Southern Express is a solid option.

I really don't like giving bad reviews, especially towards black businesses, but here we go. I thought it was cool and unique to find a fast Soul food spot in Louisville. This spot is located in Old Louisville, which may be a historical neighborhood for African-Americans. I saw that everything on the menu was a dollar and got hyped like this is a dope concept. Man, I was wrong. I should have been skeptical because the place did not look anything like the picture, in terms of appearance. The food looked it was sitting for some time and the fried food was under heat lamps. I got the catfish, Mac and cheese, greens and potato salad. The best thing was the potato salad and that was average. The other food wasn't good at all.

No fish, no menus, no manners. Our first (and last) time at this black owned business. When the owner walked out from the back as we were asking for menus, he tapped on the tv over his head, with the their website at the bottom of the screen, and mumbled "website". Rude! They acted like they were mad that we wanted to give them our money. So we only got some sides and just left, forever! Greens, cabbage, sweet potatoes, and tomato/onion/cucumber salad was not bad. But, even if it had been the best we'd ever eaten, we wouldn't go back. The only tip for them today would be to go buy a customer service personality.

This is an interesting place. Service was fast and as others have mentioned it is very affordable. It isn't the best I've had, but for a few dollars I'm happy. I got the fish fry and the mac n cheese. The fried fish was a bit bland but the fish was crispy outside and tender inside. The mac n cheese was gooey and I was pleasantly surprised by how much flavor it had.I tried the yams my friend ordered and they were fantastic. Definitely something I'd order next time. The fried chicken skin was good. Unfortunately, they don't do thicken breasts and I'm not personally a huge fan of dark meat.My friends and I decided to eat in the restaurant (we had been walking St. James for a few hours and it was nice to sit in the AC), but in the future I'd do carry out. This isn't my new go to place, but it's good. If you are looking for something cheap and tasty I'd check it out!

Southern Express is a quaint hole-in-the-wall off of Oak Street in Old Louisville. Don't be discouraged by the paper taped in the windows displaying "no loitering;" this place is good. Upon entry you order via cafeteria style. The offerings of fried chicken, fried fish, pork chops and livers all looked great. They do not serve breast here though, so if you're a white-meat fiend, keep that in mind. The sides ranged from Mac and cheese, collard greens, cabbage, beans and variety of soulful accompaniments. The highlight to me is the incredible value for what you get. Each item is literally only one dollar. So I ordered three pieces of chicken, macaroni and greens with a Big Red and my meal was six dollars. Less than a Chik-fila #1 combo. Do yourself a favor and eat here. Service is incredibly fast and the flavors were on point. I've had better, but not at these low prices.

Food slaps and is amazingly good. Incredibly priced and you can feed 2 people for at least $25 and get a good amount of food for the prices. I plan on going back to Louisville to eat here. And the people who own and work there are awesome and very friendly...

I came in for lunch around 12:30pm. They weren't busy. I got 2 legs and 2 wings, baked spaghetti, seafood pasta, cornbread, greens and Mac/cheese. Chicken was sooo good! I swallowed it lol. The baked spaghetti was really good too. The seafood pasta was a little runny but flavor was there. The cornbread was soft and not too moist. The greens were so good! The Mac/cheese was plain and little runny but cheesy. I'm pregnant and this place satisfied my soul food craving i was having today. The lady servicing was very nice and we had a little laugh cause i was getting so much food. I'll definitely be back again for lunch. (I was so hungry i forgot to take a picture of my food before i swallowed it)
