Awesome place! Decorations and vibes are immaculate. The movie trivia was really fun, but super 90s heavy. If you have more than 6 people they let you sit together and play, but you just can't actually officially compete with the other teams. They don't have much food options which we expected so we got a slice of Goodfellas pizza before going (right down the street).I wish they had more beer options. They definitely are more focused on their mixed drinks.

Went to a taped comedy show last night and it was legit one of the best shows I can remember! Very talented comedians from out of town. And only $5! Their shows always seem well organized and staff is attentive.

Planet of the tapes is a very cool and unique 80s/90s retro movie themed bar and fully functional dvd and vhs rental establishment. Too cool right? This establishment shares a parking lot with long time Lousiville staple diamonds and milewide brewing just off Barrett lane in a very popular bar scene in the Louisvilel highlands area. As soon as you walk in downtown his bright yellow establishment the inside ha a contrasting dark lit atmosphere like a movie theatre. That would be because it kinda is a small movie theatre. You walk in downtown heights a hallway filled with nostalgic movie characters and to the left is the full service bar and right in front of you is the seating section with a projector pumping out some of your favorite 80's and 90's cult hits. It was October when me and my buddy Jeremy came here so they was playing a Halloween favorite sleepy hollow. We sat down immediately and glanced at there clever drink menu all themed after cult hit movies and stars of the the two aforementioned decades. My buddy isn't much of a mix drinker so he went with a bourbon and coke. I was feeling nostalgic so I got one of the fun drinks. I ordered a cinna-bite drink (Tito's vodka, coffee and cinnamon). While we waited we browsed around checking out the very cool and nostalgic decor and went on the other side of the bar to check out the rental section to bring back all the nostalgic feels of combing through a blockbuster in our youth. Our drinks came out quickly and our waiter was super nice and helpful. It appeared they had some regulars there for a trivia night and he asked us if we wanted to participate but we had to be somewhere soon. But I'm sure it would have been cool to do. My buddy liked his beam and coke. Classic drink that's hard to mess up. My specialty drink was very good. I'm not a huge coffee guy and the cinnamon and vodka had very good and distinct flavors. Very tasty and potentially dangerous I guess because you would have no idea that drink had any hard liquor in it. Upon leaving I noticed they had a ghost busters hi-c ecto cooler (y'all remember those?) hard drink. When I come back I'll have to try that. I'm sure it's great as well. Overall, awesome place with an amazingly fun and nostalgic vibe. Great and creative drinks and a friendly staff. I can see this being a cool spot to come and hang out when I have more spare time. Highly recommended any child of the 80s/90s to check this place out. You will not regret it.

The level of service is outstanding. The talent they bring in for comedy shows is awesome. The prices for drinks are very reasonable. It's a comfortable and friendly place to see a show.

This place is awesome we just happened to stumble upon it while my buddy and I were out and about for the evening going to a bunch of different places. He's been wanting to go to this place and I've never heard of it so we walked over there for a drink. It was really awesome you walk in it's like a little movie theater the light to turn down low they were showing the movie sleepy Hollow when we walked in they had Halloween decorations everywhere that made you show your vaccination card so that was cool first time I've ever had to do that. And I ordered a bourbon and Coke it was five dollars good price he had some kind of fancy cool drink that he really liked the guy that waited on us was cool they had a lot of neat memorabilia and artifacts up from 80s 90s movies so that was really cool as well. I'll be back for sure

Disclosure: I am friends with one of the owners. Planet of the Tapes is this great concept that reminds me of movies from the 80s and having VCRs. During the week they are a bar and they show movies and even do it movie trivia on Tuesdays. On the weekends it's a comedy club. They've got a variety of acts that come in and share their talents. The drinks are inspired from movies that we know. I love their silent ordering because you just write down your order and they will bring it to you. For the way, the space is laid out this makes it very easy to enjoy your company, or show and still enjoy something to drink. They only have snacks that are available so I would recommend eating before an event there. And if you're feeling really adventurous you could always rent out a movie to watch. This is such a fun use of this space and I'm glad Planet of the Tapes is thriving.

I discovered this place tonight, and I'm obsessed. The staff were so friendly and welcoming and the atmosphere is just awesome! It's retro and gives me "Rocky Horror" vibes. They offer delicious cocktails named after movies got the cinna bite. It was so delicious and it had a chocolate hazelnut Piroutte cookie in it! My friend ordered the straw shank redemption and that was so amazing (and dangerous)They also have a massive screen where they play entire movies for the guests. While we were there, they showed "Adam Family Values" which was an epic flashback to the 90s. You can also rent an assortment of movies from the bar. Will definitely be back'

I'm a gal who loves a theme, and this place is theme town!Anywho....first things first.Planet of the Tapes is located in the small building between MileWide and the parking lot area. Currently (as in...amidst Covid-y times) the entrance of choice is the less logical door to choose from....at the back of the building by the handicap parking spots. They have snacks for purchase, but no real food here. I came several times where we brought in our own pizza or donuts to eat during our visit. Be prepared, food-wise.Planet of the Tapes has a stage area and is host to occasional comedy shows and storytelling events. My most often reason for being here was for weekly trivia. Trivia is usually movie focused (getting on that theme), with one week a month being television focused. It is lots of fun and I am mostly sad because I don't have a team to play with regularly! The drinks are all punny playful names based on movies, characters, and actors (on theme again, y'all). I have gotten to try a very good many of them, but I gotta say I think the Cherry Busey is my favorite. Be sure to OPEN the DVD case menus for the secret menu/drink specials! And the drinks themselves are very reasonably priced.I like the ordering process, where you write what you want on a sheet of paper and put in on a holder on the table. The staff can come and grab it, know who's tab it is on, and deliver it...without having to bug you too much or interrupt or you awkwardly having to wave them over to order. I don't know how well this would work in larger venues, but for tiny lil' Planet of the Tapes....it is perfect!I super like this place and you shouldn't pass it up!

Don't pass this place up! It is lowkey probably my new favorite spot. We came here on a random Monday night just to check it out and get a drink - it ended up being one of the best times we've had in a while!First of all, masks are worn by staff and customers when up and about. All ordering happens at your table and there's hand sanitizer you can use when you first walk in.Little did we know that Mondays are Movie Bingo night. We ended up watching a movie, having a few drinks, and winning bingo! It was really fun and it might just be a new weekly tradition for us.The drink prices aren't bad and the cocktails are SO good! There's also liquor, beer, and wine options, but I don't think I got a photo of that menu... sorry fam!The decor is so cute! You can also rent a movie here, which I love. And all the snack are $1. I can't wait to go back!

I went to Planet of the Tapes for the first time recently and was very pleased with my visit. I waffled between 4 and 5 stars, ultimately deciding on 5 because the good, unique qualities outweighed the few, minor issues I had. We went to go see a comedy show and accidentally arrived an hour early (whoops!). They require proof of vaccination at the door so make sure you have that handy before you arrive. We were greeted very warmly at the front and asked for our reservation. Everything was clean, clean, clean. The cocktail menu is very diverse, including a number of savory drinks which I appreciated as I am not into super sweet cocktails. I ordered the Gin Varney which was - and I say this positively and enthusiastically - like a salad in a drink. It was refreshing and light. I asked about food because we had forgotten dinner prior to arrival. They had a "charcuterie board" available for $15. It included many items - cashews, grapes, pickles, beer cheese dip, Benedictine, pita chips and cheese. My only issue was that the cheese was Sargento cheese sticks, like the kind you get at truck stop. I get that these charcuterie boards are made well in advance and that this place is decidedly not a restaurant, but gas station cheese on a $15 charcuterie board isn't exactly...it. That said, there was plenty of food for the two of us and we enjoyed it during the show. The silent drink ordering system was top notch and made ordering the next round a breeze. Systems of ordering and communication were well marked and put in place. And again, everything was clean and swift. The theme of Planet of the Tapes was ever present - the drink menu on a DVD case, the bill strapped to a VHS case, and the whole look was very cohesive and well executed. It wasn't necessarily cheap, but the service was prompt and professional and never once disrupted the show. I highly recommend checking this place out - it's definitely event-worthy and fun-kitschy, especially if you are an elder millennial who fondly remembers Friday nights at Blockbuster picking out a movie to take home and watch with friends over the weekend.
