We were searching for a place to eat. Another restaurant in the area had a 30-40 minute wait so we looked on Yelp for restaurants in the area and found this place which had great reviews. The inside is somewhat small, but clean. The server was very friendly and service was prompt. The painted art on the furniture and walls was excellent. I ordered a chicken bowl with rice, tomatoes, cheese, sour cream and on the side was red enchilada sauce. The chicken was wonderfully seasoned and I only was able to eat half of it. My husband ordered the Texana fajitas, which was a trio of meats (steak, shrimp and chicken). My daughter ordered a Grand burrito. We all left satisfied. I did not get a photo of the hub's or daughter's food before they started devouring them, but I did get a picture of my bowl.

Definitely NOT fancy, but very tasty, probably the best Mexican food we've had here in southern Indiana since eating at Mi Jalisco in Jasper, 90 minutes northwest of Jeffersonville. Delicious salsa seasoned well with a good amount of cilantro to give it a nice flavor and just enough heat to keep in interesting. Chips were served warm, fresh and crispy-crunchy. They have a very wide menu featuring a great array of Mexican specialties along with the more traditional Mexican-American fare that most people are used to. Since this was our first visit, we played it safe and each tried a good old reliable quesadilla; one grilled chicken, one grilled steak. Both were HUGE and delicious. The steak was seasoned nicely and was still juicy despite being cut small. The chicken I had was flavorful and juicy, as well, made even better with the addition of some the the house salsa. I had rice as a side item and it was probably the best I've ever had at a Mexican restaurant. I'm not sure what they season it with, but I could eat a whole bowl of it by itself. My wife had a Coke; I stuck with water. As an added bonus, when it came time to pay the bill, we were told the older couple behind us had picked up our check. To whomever you are---thank you. We'll definitely be back. P.S. One caveat; the place CAN get noisy when filled with....millennials...who have no idea what an "inside voice" is.

This has been our go to place for Mexican food for some time. The owners have always been super friendly and take time to speak with others when they come in and get to know the people there. They added a patio outside that we love when it's not too hot or too cold. I love how the food is fresh always!! You can hear it going on the grill as you walk in the door and the smells walk you to your seats! Today I had the arroz texano but it was big enough to split for two! Portion sizes are huge here. Tacos are another favorite of ours here. Give em a chance and enjoy a new favorite.

First, this establishment is no longer called Mexico City Restaurant. It's now El Mexicano. Each of our group of 4 tried something different. My wife had chicken with shrimp, grilled vegetables and smothered in cheese. I went with Chicken Monterrey. Same deal. Chicken with grilled veggies smothered in cheese. Our friends went with El Tres-3 enchiladas. Cheese, chicken & pork. Smothered in cheese. Are we beginning to see a pattern? Throw in a steak burrito and we've got a full table. The meal started with a good margarita, fairly thick, not greasy chips and a mild salsa. Thankfully, there was some habanero hot sauce to give the salsa some kick. Tortillas served with dinner were probably from a bag and served cold. They were wrapped in foil, but I doubt they ever saw the inside of an oven. Both chicken dishes came with the thinnest chicken breast I'd ever seen. Pounded to the thickness of a piece of tilapia. So thin, it was difficult to find the chicken once it was buried in cheese. The rice and refried beans were standard fair. They don't offer charro or borracho or black beans. And the lack of any noticeable seasoning made for a very bland dinner. Service was very good. The food was served piping hot. Prices were reasonable. I just wish it had some flavor beyond cheese.

Even with there being no shortage of family-style Mexican restaurants in Louisville proper, it's worth crossing the bridge for this gem of a place. The vibe is clean, bright, and colorful, the service quick and friendly, the menu extensive, and the prices very reasonable (a dollar or so less than average for most items). The food itself is solid, beginning with the excellent salsa (and decent chips). I tried a couple of enchiladas (one beef, one chicken), a fish taco, and a side of beans, and nothing disappointed, though the fish was so-so, and I likely wouldn't get it again. In fact, next time I'll likely just get a chicken tinga enchilada combo (w/ rice and beans), with a mix of green and red sauce. For under $9, that seems to be the way to go.

I heard of Mexico City because it is one of the few places around here where you can get carne guisada. The guisada is very good. A bit spicy, but it tastes very authentic. From the outside, the restaurant does not look like much, but it is very nice inside. The tables and chairs are hand painted in bright colors. The walls are decorated in a similar fashion. The service is very attentive. I has returned a few times. They never seem crowded but do a good business at all times. The takeout orders seem to be popular. The salsa has a little too much cilantro, but it is good. They also bring out some bottled sauces which a very spicy. I'm not sure what they are, but one was a tomatillo sauce. They have sandwiches they call tortas, which means turtles. These are Big sandwiches that do look like turtles made out of bread. I had the Cubano, which had ham, cheese, avocado, pickles and a hot dog. Yes, it had a hot dog on it as well as a fried egg. Delicious. Messy but very delicious. Different. I tried their legua taco (beef tongue). Moist and tasty. Soaked through the two corn tortillas it was on. Take a chance and try something different. You'll be glad you did.

What a discovery. We were at Menards and hungry for lunch. If you want true Mexican food this place is a must. The chips were fresh, the salsa very flavorful! The tacos were simply delicious the meat was very perfect. We got all of our with just onions & cilantro but you can add lettuce, tomatoes, cheese & sour cream if you wish. The gentleman working was super friendly and helpful with the huge menu. We will be back! Heads up no margaritas but you can always do carry out!

The last time i went back here i was very upset at how bad it was. We brought our family and couple friends to try the food after we bragged about it over and over. We felt like fools after. The people working this day were extremely rude and short When there was a questioned asked. They acted like they just didn't want to bother with us and we were the only ones eating in at the time. Part of the order that was brought out was wrong. Plates were sloppy and not put together well. My food had a lot of grease and grisel. To top off what was already a bad experience some really upset customers came in and got in a big argument with the people behind the counter. It was not handled well and we thought a fight was going to break out right beside us. Sadly we haven't been back since and won't be back .
