First time at the Southland Farmers' Market. People gravitate to these markets thinking they're getting the best produce. That's not what I saw. Firstly, it's pricey. More importantly, I saw a lot of poor quality produce. I see better at Trader Joe's, even Aldi. If you're paying these prices you want near perfect. Don't let the idea of the "farmers market" skew your logic.61

The Sunday iteration of the major Lexington Farmers' Markets is farther from downtown than the others, but Southland is a good location. They're spread out across some parking lots that normally are empty, allowing plenty of space still to park and also allowing the roads to move freely. And it's not far from the university. Many vendors overlap between the markets, but the weekend ones are definitely larger than the weekday versions. This one had a wide variety of vegetables which I spent a fair amount of time perusing before leaving with a full bag. There are also several other places to shop near by, so it can be a productive (if spendy) trip if your needs are substantial.

This is the Sunday Lexington Farmers Market. It's located in the parking lot of a strip mall, on Southland Drive. I only go here if I missing the downtown Saturday market in the Rupp Arena parking lot... they do a wonderful job at mandating social distancing at that other location. No social distancing here. They try, but some people have no sense of personal space. They have chalk circles for you to stand in line, but no one was paying attention to them. It was pretty crowded when we were there around noon though. There seem to be a lot more vendors this year too. Several flower and plant farmers. West Sixth Brewery is always there with a new weekly release... this is the real reason my husband loves coming to the farmers markets. Lexington Pasta is always there too, with plenty of their homemade pastas, gnocchi, pizza dough, sauces, etc. One thing that I must mention that I don't think a lot of people realize, is that you can use a debit or credit card. You go to the main Lexington Farmers Market tent, and they will run your card in exchange for wooden tokens. They also have plenty of individually bagged disposable masks... for free. They try, they really do. Don't touch, let the farmers hand you the product. That means, don't pick up the product to inspect. I know, we've all done it, but times are a changin'.

If you are out and about on a Sunday, the Lexington Farmers Market on Southland Drive is a a place you must stop by! Not quite a big as the Saturday Market downtown you still will find a wide selection of produce, food vendors such as Quarrels Farm if you want to grab a quick breakfast, and local fermenting favorites Wise Bird Cider and West Sixth Brewing to name a few. You will also pass by a couple of local musicians who would appreciate if you throw a couple of shekels their way. Always support your local musicians! While you are there be sure to check out local favorites Winchell's, Southland Bagels and the new Critchfield Meats Family Markets. A great time for the whole family and your canine companions are welcome too!

This is a smaller market than the one held downtown on Saturdays but there are still plenty of vendors and lots of variety. You will find fresh pasta, homemade cheeses, local meat, herbs, fruits, fresh cut flowers, and veggies here. I always being plenty of small bills, but you can also use your debit card at the Farmer's Market table and get wooden coins that can be used just like cash at most of the vendors. My favorite part of my visit today was Roger and Clay, two older gentleman playing guitar and fiddle and singing for tips. Dogs are welcome at the market and one vendor even sells bones (real bones not baked dog treats)!

My resolution is to write a glowing review for every scathing one. The Lexington Farmers' markets deserve a GLOWING review. The most luscious homegrown tomatoes one could wish for at $1.75 a pound?! All sorts of fresh produce are offered at prices which - well, having grown my own vegetables, I would charge ten times what most these sellers do. And the Lexington Farmers' Market organization insists the vendors truth-in-advertise what is grown where, and what is locally grown and what is not. So you know youre not buying on the street the same thing on offer in the grocery. Baby eggplants. Baby squash. Local peaches as delish as anything from Georgia . . . etc. etc. I love to cook (which is one reason I am tough on bad restaurants), and the Lexington Farmers Market offers five star produce suitable for cooking your own five star meals. Support your local farmer!

I love summer time because of the farmers markets that are open almost everyday of the week at various locations! This was the first time I had been to Southland on Sunday and I was so surprised with the American unit of vendors!! So many faces from the downtown Saturday market are here which is awesome because I can't always make it downtown on Saturdays. I prefer Southland now more just because it's a bit more spread out and easier to walk through without bumping into everyone or little pups. Lots of great veggies, meats, snacks like kettle corn and yummy smelling food being cooked for purchase. Buy local!!! I love our KY Farmers!!
