The longer I live in Louisville, the more my appreciation for ethnic grocery stores like this one grows. It's not a supermarket. Really, it's just a little place joined at the hip of the La Loma restaurant next door. But you can happily do your week's shopping here and get a lot more than fried chicken and soda.La Loma is relatively small and the offerings are almost exclusively Latino foods and brands, but there's a legit produce aisle, a great meat (& cheese) counter (maybe even a butcher on site), pan dulce, and even a separate counter for smoothies, ice cream, and paletas. No, you won't be able to get your Swiss cheese, dill pickles, or Cracklin' Oat Bran. But the more limited selection is a small price to pay for the fact that you don't have to shop at a sprawling 10-acre megastore. And it doesn't exactly hurt that the La Loma restaurant is delicious.
