The best kept secret for freshly made deli sandwiches & good ol country folks talking horse. Horse racing is always in the TV. Being a foodie from Vegas, I highly recommend this locals convenient store & have been coming here for 5 years now. During the horse sales at Fastig-Tipton, I always stop in here as it's on the way & order the same thing everytime. Two Country Ham sandwiches, American cheese, onion, lettuce, fresh tomato from the backyard garden on white bread w/ mayo. A bag of Funyons & can of Ale 8 for only $10.49. Trust me, Robbie knows how to make a sandwich, it's loaded w/ meat. They have a variety of sandwiches from Roast Beef to Bologna to Pimento Cheese. They also sell beer & other beverages, snacks, chips, candy, lottery tickets, even Hannah's Pickled Eggs. Outdoor seating or grab a booth inside on the right w/ all the locals & say hi. They'd have a solid 5 stars, but I don't think many regulars around these parts use Yelp. Being an Indian woman from the city, I have never felt uncomfortable or out of place walking in here. I thoroughly enjoy the company, friendly banter, food & catching up on racehorse politics, about the Derby & latest news & events.Walk in with an open mind & learn something new & meet some good ol locals here next time you are in Lexington or traveling through KY. It's worth the drive & surrounded by beautiful farms.

This little country store, convenience/deli, has been here a long time. I can't say how many times I've passed it driving down Russell Cave Rd. Today was the day I finally ventured in. They were so welcoming. Country ham! Robbie will make you a sandwich as you like it, eith all the fix'ns. The prices are old school. This lunch spot is well known to the local horse farm community. Give it a go. Next time, I'm going for the fried bologna sandwich.

This place is a definite do not bother to get out of your car place!!! Drive right on by and cross it off your list. While the people outside the store are somewhat sketchy looking, no one bothered us. Most were older people who looked like they had a few too many afternoon beers. I wouldn't even think about eating anything from this place. We purchased two Ale 8 sodas cause they were .90 cents each. The place was disgusting inside and out. The area around the store does make for some pretty country driving but keep on going when you come to this stop. Would never come here again.

This little country store reminds me of growing up in Tennessee. Great people hanging out and everyone friendly as can be. Great selection of Grippos chips and the best bologna sandwich with homegrown tomatoes!!

I don't want to be negative here, but this place left me no choice. I'd driven by here a hundred times or more over the years, so I decided I'd stop in and check the place out. I was hoping for a cozy, friendly little country store, I got something else.I set foot inside, and it's like that scene in a movie when the stranger walks into a bar and everyone stops and looks. There's a row of booths along the wall, with a half-dozen or so (what looked to be) scruffy-looking regulars there that stopped their conversation and just stared at me, putting their cans of beer down. The store itself has a couple of small shelves of snack foods, well picked through. About all they actually had were a dozen or so packs of donuts and snack cakes, some candy bars, a few assorted odds & ends, and some bags of chips. . .and the chips and candy bars were right in front of the regulars who were NOT making me feel very welcome. Oh, there was several coolers with a variety of cheap beers, and a few soft drinks, but mostly beer. There was also a deli counter that looked like it hadn't been used in months or years. The place was dimly lit even after sundown, the main lights being the lights from the drink coolers, the deli sign, the TV, and a light above the checkout counter. The only friendly-looking man in the place asked if he could help me, I just said I was passing through and had gone by there many, many times over the years, he tried to be very welcoming, and seemed almost apologetic. . .while the peanut gallery of regulars just continued to stare at me like my walking in the door was entertainment to them. . .and eventually ignored me to go back at watching the evening news together when they got bored of me standing there. The place felt more like a redneck dive bar that's set up in an excuse for a convenience store than anything else. To not be totally rude, I bought a bottle of Ale-8 and promptly left, but I couldn't imagine the circumstances that would have me wanting to go back in there and shop again.

While traveling the bourbon trail with my girlfriends, we stopped in the Lexington area to soak up the horse culture. Jot-em Down Store offers a variety of beverages and a deli in a convenience store atmosphere. But don't let that fool you. On race day, you'll find some friendly locals inside watching the horse races. You can learn more here than at the actual race track. Not to mention the deli sandwiches are generously portioned. I felt like a local and loved every minute.

Hands down the BEST sandwiches in Lexington... maybe in Kentucky. Everything is fresh, and made to order. Seriously good. The store is old, no doubt or skating around that, but don't let the look fool you, head to the back, order a sandwich and I promise you, it'll be a great rest of the day.

Just read Joseph O's review and can't disagree more. Any time I've gone in there, as an outsider from Michigan vacationing in Kentucky, everybody has been very friendly. Wound up sitting for an hour discussing racing with two locals who had worked in the Thoroughbred industry for years. Perhaps if you walk in with an attitude that you're above everybody else, they sense that. But if you're friendly to them, they're friendly in return. Going to the Jot'em Down store is something I look forward to every time I visit the Bluegrass.

I don't know what Joseph O's problem is as I used to be a regular there whenever I would go with a group of friends to see the Kentucky Derby. The people who work there are certainly friendly but I found the store's customers to be outgoing folks who would make anybody feel comfortable. Maybe you picked a bad day to stop by the store. But, you're review is not representative of the friendly atmosphere of everybody who works and frequents the store.
