The store front. Looks are deceiving. It's amazing.

Stopped in today for lunch and got some amazing authentic Mexican food. I ordered 4 tacos - carnitas, al pastor and adobada. They were all great but I favored the carnitas. The meat was super tender and tasty. The best part was the sauce they bring out to the table in little squirt bottles. The red sauce was a chipotle flavored salsa and the green was just as amazing, maybe even more so. Prices were really reasonable, $1.75 per taco and other menu items were under $10. The only downside was that it took a little while (about 20 minutes) for it to be made. Of course, that means it was cooked fresh! I can't wait to come back!

Ok, I'll admit it, I'm a taco snob. No Taco Bell taco facsimiles for me. I want the real thing. I want to walk into a shop and see the menu in Spanish and find the tables filled with Latino immigrants longing for a taste of home. That's what you'll find at Taqueria Hidalgo. The menu is not extensive, tacos, burritos, soup (posole on the weekends) sandwiches, and quesadillas but who needs an extensive menu? We are really here for the tacos, right? So, let's talk about the tacos. I'm a huge fan of tripas (tripe) tacos. Growing up in East Tennessee I would never have imagined myself willingly eating the intestines of any animal but here I am, longing for those delectable morsels of deliciousness on a good tortilla with lime and a fiery green salsa. Taqueria Hidalgo delivers. The tripe tacos (order it cooked crispy) are delicious. The owner tells me they sell a huge amount of the tripe tacos and I see why - each crispy little piece of tripe is an earthy, porky, bite of heaven. Add the standard onions, cilantro, and lime along with some of the homemade green salsa and it's an explosion of flavor in your mouth. For the less advanced taco connoisseurs, they also have chicken, steak, marinated pork, etc. but be aware these are Mexican style street tacos - no cheese and served on soft corn tortillas. I'm so happy we have this family run business in Richmond. It is an asset to the community. Check it out!

Excellent taqueria with long wait times. I love the taste of this place. The red salsa is smoky and spicy, their meats are spiced well and their prices are fantastic (1.75 per taco). The only negative is they are slowww.. all food is cooked to order so this is a little expected but still seems a bit excessive.

This was a great dinner. They have amazing tacos, and it's probably the most authentic Mexican food I've ever had. I had two chicken gorditas and my date had four tacos. Both were amazing and came with a spicy salsa Verde, and a deep red chipotle salsa. The flavor that came from our meal was complex and fresh, and very affordable. The outside may seem bare, and the restaurant doesn't get as much traffic as their small grocery store next door, but it's incredible. I may try to see whether they have take out, as that would be great on a busy day.

Absolutely amazing food! It's all made to order and worth the extra wait time for delicious, fresh Mexican food. The owners are friendly and provide a welcoming atmosphere. The grocery/restaurant is cute and quaint. No mariachi band, no fake-décor, no over-priced Americanized food. This place is perfect.
