Mr. J And Mrs. J.

This business is also known as Nature Sunshine Herbs. I guess they keep changing their name because of their unethical business practices. I rarely ever give one star reviews however this store and its owners fall SO far below my satisfaction expectation as a consumer, I would have given them zero stars if applicable. The store itself is very small, cramped and dated. (I can get over that.. But wait there's more.) The product is tightly placed without rhyme or reason throughout this tiny space and makes it difficult to find anything on your own which...FORCES you to interact with these owners. (I can still get over that.. But wait there's more.) I'm a long term customer of Natures Sunshine products and have frequented an established store in Corydon, IN since 2002 that also carries Natures Sunshine. I have a Natures Sunshine membership through them. It's a free one year membership when you purchase $40 worth of product. The Corydon store signed me up over a decade ago. However, I make larger purchases online directly from Natures Sunshine because they will send you coupons frequently that are good only online for $10 off $50 spent, $20 off $100 spent or $30 off $150 spent ect and the product is less expensive. However, sometimes I run low on one item or I want to get feedback or their expertise on a new supplement and I will visit in-store and have absolutely no problem paying a higher price because of their service and space. This time I was running low and in between weeks while waiting for my coupon.I noticed that there was a new store on Eastern Blvd. I decided to give this store a try because it is so much closer and convenient than driving to Corydon. My first visit, I went in and was literally able to turn three feet in each direction and looked around. I decided to ask the older gentleman at the cash register for the product. (By the way, he never said hello when I entered. It was like being directly in front of someone and they don't speak. Awkward...) He walked two feet got the bottle and rang me up. It was $9.75 more expensive than I was used to paying at the Corydon store, but I was in a hurry. I asked the man about the price but he wasn't able to give me a straight answer and he looked over to his wife who was on the phone. I figured it was because he was just helping out and didn't know. So I purchased the product and left...I was running low on the same product again and hadn't placed my order online because I was still waiting for my coupon. So I decided to give this store a second try and returned a couple of weeks later. I walked into the tiny space and the same older woman who was on the phone, the previous visit was at the counter. I asked for the product, she got it and started to ring me up. I noticed the price increased by $3.25 from the last visit and now I was paying $13 more. I inquired about the price increase and asked her if I gave her my membership number would I receive a better in-store retail membership price? She never gave me a straight answer except that they don't take the memberships. I asked what caused it to be $13 more per bottle than what I was used to paying in store. She said "to pay for all of this." I looked around and I said "oh. " I wanted to leave then, but I stayed because I was already there and needed the item. Then the woman with a tucked nasty attitude tried to run my debit card many times and was unable to make a simple transaction. It was obvious she didn't know how to work the register. I work retail and I could have gone behind the counter and done it myself. She said that her husband was gone and was going to write my credit card number down and run it later. After all of that (I had stood patiently at the counter for about 7 minutes as I watched her complete incompetence.) I felt not only was I being ripped off, but her complete demeanor was reeling with lack of ethics. So I politely told her I no longer needed the product and left. I would rather drive 40 minutes to Corydon than to deal with these people ever again. It was so bad, I called the corporate office of Natures Sunshine and reported them. I like Natures Sunshine, I think it's a middle of the road supplement line...not the most expensive out there, but better than what you'd buy at the major retailers like Walmart, Kroger, CVS, ect. Back to this store, there are more knowledgable store owners and employees with stronger health, homeopath backgrounds and basic retail experience that offer legitimate pricing than these people. I completely understand paying a higher price because of bricks and mortar. I'm also a small business owner. But I experienced price gouging and unethical behavior. I will never, EVER return.

I have shopped at Harvest House for at least 20 years, though they have changed location, during this they have always been Harvest House when I've been there. They have always been very helpful and knowledgeable and I have recommended them to my friends and family.

Owners are great people. Good selction of supplements and herbs. If they don't carry it, they can usually order it or recommend someone else who might have it. Call before you go as they are only open 3 days a week.

Like the other 5 star review for Harvest House, which you deemed "not recommended," I'm not only ALSO originally from San Francisco, CA, but like her, I've been a customer for DECADES of Harvest House in Clarksville, In. I've always enjoyed shooting the breeze with the owners and being able to choose from the many, many products this little store has gone though the trouble to find, try, and stock. There are normally several brands offered for a given purpose from which customers can choose. Mrs. J is very knowledgeable about all the products stocked. She has over 50 years healthcare experience and if you, like me, also use Solaray,Pure Herbs, LTD, Dr. Goodpet, and Nordic brands for your elderly pets, she'll provide dosages or consult on alternates. Although I have no doubt that the previous reviewer (who gave only 1 star for this store), didn't discuss a products's efficacy with the owners and based her review on: 1) a price comparison, and 2) issues Mrs. J had with their new transaction software (BTW, Mr. J handles the technical side and Mrs. J the customer service side of their partnership and business), it seems to me that she missed the point of being a customer of a small, family-owned business. She's right about two topics: her tips regarding ordering Nature's Sunshine products by mail and, if she's looking for the time saving automation of a more typical storefront, she's not a good fit for Harvest House. :)

I've been to her shop numerous times over the last 4 years to purchase probiotics, elderberry syrup, and other supplements. (Nature's Sunshine Bifidobactillus Flora Force, serious immune support - must be refrigerated so buying from a local source is essential. Kicks most illnesses and stomach bugs in the pants within 24 hrs.) The owner of this store has been a registered nurse for over 50 years - she is extremely knowledgable about medical concerns as well as holistic/natural supplements and treatments. She and her husband own it and operate it themselves - they aren't the most tech savvy, and the credit card machine has malfunctioned on a couple of occasions. (They wrote down my number and ran it later for the exact amount discussed - never had a problem with security issues. It's not ideal, but it's honestly almost a non-issue.) It is a quintessential mom and pop shop - on every visit the owner has taken as much time as I've needed to discuss health concerns, various supplements, etc. They've given me numerous free samples, and have been very generous with their time and supplies - even giving me a large sample of probiotics from their personal fridge in back for FREE once (they were out of stock) because they wanted to help my family get over the yucks. See what I mean? It's like going to your grandma's shop if your grandma was a retired nurse with a proclivity toward holistic medicine. The store is older and packed to the gills with supplements, digestive aids, food items, soaps, etc. If you're looking for a slick, Instagram-worthy space with youthful environment and the latest tech this is not the place for you. But if you're looking for an experienced, no-nonsense knowledgeable person who is happy to help you select supplements and vitamins for your individual needs, it's worth a visit.
