We were so disappointed in every facet of our visit. Enticed by good reviews and a yen for German food, four of us set out for The German Cafe after visiting West Baden Springs Hotel, French Lick Hotel and French Lick Winery. Great experiences all day - until The German Cafe. Service was slow, though hardly any customers were present in the front dining room, and none in the back where we were led to seats near the restrooms.Eventually the waitress took our orders and told us that to share a plate cost extra. Ok. We assumed correctly that portions might be large and would be too much for us, so two of us opted to share a meal (pork tenderloin with mushroom gravy.). The others ordered Polish sausage and fries, and fried mushrooms. Wine, cola and water completed our orders. Three dinners eventually arrived. Fairly slow, but we are patient people. The waitress said the mushrooms (to be served with dipping sauce and garlic bread) would be coming later. Service was atrocious. No updates on the mushrooms were forthcoming. The rest of us ate what we could of a mostly bland meal. The tenderloin had gristle and the gravy was not very good - the mushrooms were chewy but plentiful - nice if you like chewy not very tasty mushrooms. Then the fried mushrooms FINALLY arrived. I wish I'd taken a photo of the too-long-in-the-fryer plate of very brown mushrooms that tasted burnt. Very little dipping sauce in the less than half fill container. Bonus! NO GARLIC BREAD! When that was brought to her attention she said, "Oh! We've been busy. I think we're out of that". Omg! No substitute was offered, and she hadn't mentioned anything to that effect when the order was placed, nor when she set the plate down and rushed off. Much later she came by and when I flagged her down she asked if something was wrong. How could she tell? Only one of four plates had been close to emptied. I explained all of the issues. We did not even ask for a doggy bag / we like our doggy too much. She said she'd pass it along. In a few minutes she was back with the bill - no explanation and no apology and decidedly no adjustment. We'd asked for the manager, but we never saw one. The waitress complained that she was too busy. I'm sure that's true, but even so, she offered no redeeming features, so - no tip, I know it wasn't ALL her fault, but she did absolutely nothing to try to make things better.We will never return, and I hope my review keeps others from a terrible experience.
