Wow...don't know what to say. The quesadilla didn't have cheese in it. This was probably the worst Mexican food I've ever had. The Quesadilla was horrible. Someone needs to help this place out ASAP

Other than giving us each our own bowl of complementary salsa so we didn't have to share, I was not very impressed. The frijoles had an odd taste. They weren't inedible, just tasted sweet as though sweetener had been added to them. I ordered a tamale, and it was covered with a bunch of what looked like shredded chicken in a red sauce. Completely unappetizing looking. When I scraped it all off, the tamale was probably the worst I have eaten in 40 years. (And I have eaten a LOT of tamales!) The masa was completely flavorless, as was the filling. Perhaps they have been getting away with it because of the stuff they serve on top. Also, it was odd to be at a Mexican establishment that had no hot sauce on the table. I would have asked for some but servers were often nowhere to be seen or not able to be flagged down.

Everybody we talked to in the area loves El Maguey Grill and says it "real" Mexican food that is better than at other places around. So, six of us went there for dinner. The atmosphere was fine, and our server was friendly, though new, so he had to go ask about a few things (no biggie). I was able to get Nopal (cactus) in my Veggie Fajitas instead of mushrooms, so that was nice. It was my first time for cactus, and I liked it. The texture was about like cooked green peppers, but the flavor is sweeter (though not quite as sweet as red peppers). The portion size is huge, so it provided two meals for me.So, I really wanted to give this place 4 or 5 stars (like my friends would), but I cannot for the following reasons:1. Onions, peppers and mushrooms in veggie fajitas feels like an afterthought. Why not use cactus since they serve it? Or things like squash, zucchini, or broccoli?2. Their sangria comes in a bottle. Thus, I opted for wine.3. Their Burgundy wine (haven't seen that on a menu in eons, though I like it) was served ice cold. :(

Well if you can get food to go you'll likely give this place 4 or 5 stars. The ambiance I would rate 2 stars and the service merits 1 star at best. My wife and I ate there on a Saturday for lunch. The TV had a basketball game on which was fine. But normally the volume is muted in restaurants especially when the TV caption is available. But the TV volume was on loud, competing with the Latino Electronica LOUD music which was playing. I had a slight headache when I arrived and a major one when I left. Here is a positive: the food was very good. My wife had something called Brochetas which was a mix of steak and chicken (had to ask for half and half and server was confused at the request) and veggies on a shish kebab. She got 2 with her order. I don't remember what mine was called but it was a chicken breast with vegetables. Her order was significantly more generous than mine. I ate part of hers and she still had some left so we took it home. If I could erase the experience with the servers I would rate this place at least 4 stars if not higher. All servers that I saw were teenagers. That's fine if they do their job. They did not. The ones we saw were constantly checking their phones, but not checking on us. Granted, I do drink a lot of ice tea and their glasses are a bit on the small side. So I had to regularly ask for refills. Not once did the teeny bopper server ask on her own if I wanted a refill and NOT ONCE did she check back with us to ask if all was ok with the food, etc. On a previous visit, the teenage male that waited on us took our glasses away from the table to refill them. What I didn't like is that he also had in hand someone else's glass from a different table to refill that one. I'm not a germaphobe but that seems unsanitary to me. Our friend in Boonville IN where the other El Maguey is (same management) said that restaurant has gone downhill lately too. She used to love it and choose it over Los Bravos but not any more. Bottom line: food is good but there needs to be better management and better training and supervision of the teenage servers.

This is our go-to Mexican restaurant in Jasper. This place has the most delicious enchiladas and the staff is always super friendly! The food comes out quick and piping hot. Our waiters are always so very kind and make sure our visit is nothing less than perfect. We continue to return!

A friend took me there today for my first visit. I promise you it won't be the last time you will see me there! I had the Steak Mexicali which is a fairly thin T-bone with a marinade that is unbelievable. Its served on a bed of roasted peppers, onions and tomatoes. It comes with rice and re fried beans. The veggies were perfectly roasted to bring out the flavor but still retain the snap of a fresh vegetable. The steak itself was the most tender Ive ever had which is really hard to pull off with a T-bone. They serve fresh chips and salsa as an appetizer and the salsa was great as well. Very authentic food, excellent service and very kind and attentive wait staff. Even got us to go drinks at no charge. Highly recommended!!!

Honestly the food isn't bad but for the price they need to add beans and rice to side. I was disappointed to order the burrito and go nothing but the burrito. Food is ok. Will probably move on and see what else is in town. I am really disappointed as they were close and thought it could be something but it is just mediocre at best. Needs more flavor add sides and their prices are way over for what you get.
