We stumbled across this restaurant on our trip to Evansville to visit the LST, and the Cross Eyed Cricket was nearby. Trusting their website advice to overlook the appearance of their restaurant, which is located in an older house in a more industrial area, we decided to have dinner in a non traditional restaurant, and we were very glad that we did. The service was excellent, so friendly and efficient that we could have been in a 5 star restaurant. But you wouldn't find food that good in most fancy restaurants. We started with a plate of fried green tomatoes, and while no one is ever going to fix them as well as Daddy did in his iron skillet, they provided a dip to join them that was quite good... certainly, not one that Daddy ever thought of! Auntie had the pulled pork dinner with mashed potatoes and gravy & apple sauce. She ordered the appetizer brussell sprouts, and they were amazing! Hubby went with one of his favorite meals: fried catfish; yes, he almost inhaled it! As always, his German fried potatoes were great, and what can you really say about cottage cheese? It was there, and he ate it I went for the kubuki steak with fried cabbage & onions & mushrooms. The fried rice was delicious, but the ribeye took "delicious" to a whole new level! Oh! My goodness! It practically melted in my mouth! And the cabbage!! Wonderful! The "50's" down-home furnishings were likely family hand-me-downs & yard-sale finds, not particularly pretty but serviceable and authentic. Everything was very clean, even the too-small restroom, which reminded me of the first one my grandmother ever had in her house. Again, it was clean, but there was a leak on the restroom floor, something that can easily be repaired. If you are looking for upscale decor, don't come here. But if you want terrific food, friendly service, and a delightful experience, be sure to visit the Cross Eyed Cricket; it's wonderful! I understand there's a sister Cross Eyed Cricket in a three-story building right in the middle of the charming downtown. Their food might be almost as good as we had, but I think the lost atmosphere will detract from the visit. It's your call!

By far the best breakfast in town in my opinion and absolutely love the waitress and friendly staff. And the bread pudding is a must! You have to try it because you will never taste any like it. It's by far superior! Good work guys

I've lived nearby for the majority of my life and had never tried the Cross-Eyed Cricket. This establishment has been a part of this community for as long as I could ever recall. It is definitely a place where one would pass by and say, "I should stop there some day." Today was my day.The restaurant is a small, diner-style restaurant. I was immediately impressed with the live edge tables throughout. Even on their outdoor patio, I noticed live edge on their stool-height tables. There were 11 full size tables/booths and 4 small tables. It was quaint.I ordered their meatloaf which came with three sides. I selected mashed potatoes and a double portion of fried okra for $13 and a soft drink for $3.25. A dinner roll with regular and strawberry butter accompanied the plate. The meatloaf was smothered with brown gravy, so if a ketchup topping is your thing with meatloaf, you might want to select a different entree. The food was okay. Not fantastic but not terrible - this is what earned the 4 stars. My feeling was that most everything was purchased from a food supplier, heated and served. It was good diner food but probably not a place that I would choose to impress a date.I noticed a few families dining in and a few singles (like me). Overall, I am glad that I finally tried it but can't say that this would be a place that I would frequent. It would be nice to know how long they have been operating.

Suggest you arrive early for breakfast or you will be line out the door at the converted old house turned eatery. They have delicious PIE options and if I can get pie for breakfast the day is going to start off perfect. Rhubarb pie is seasonal and on this visit in August, this delicious treat with a golden buttery crust and not overly sweet filing of rhubarb (no strawberry in it ) to my breakfast table. The savory item for me was a big serving side item of German Potatoes with the right amount of onion and crisp and softness.Drinks are a tad pricey at $3.00, otherwise food cost is good, food is good and good service. Overall good for being slam packed, definitely a must stop when passing by.

I'm not giving up on this place yet because the green beans and mashed potatoes were delicious. However, the batter on the chicken fried chicken was nothing but raw, slimy, thick flour. It was so slimy that it wasn't sticking to the chicken at all. As you can see in the picture below, that is the little bit of chicken that's in the middle and the rest is the batter. It was inedible. The batter is thicker than the chicken. I still can't believe that this is what they're serving people. Crazy. I know they have great food, that's why I'm so shocked about this chicken.

Three of us had breakfast today. They were very busy but did an outstanding job on serving their guest. Dining room is tight but food is worth it. Sausage gravy and biscuits stood out today. Will repeat!
