This was a super random find as I was driving from Evansville to Indianapolis the "back way". I just planned to get a to-go coffee but decided to stay for lunch. It seems like it's been untouched for decades. It may be confusing for some because on Apple Maps it comes up as Cakes and Coffee Cafe (as it does here on Yelp), but the menu says "Randy's Americana Cafe" - not sure if the name changed at some point. Regardless, it was a cool old building with this really long high top lunch counter out in the middle with traditional table seating all around. I came in on a Monday and there was a steady trickle of mostly seniors coming in. I ordered a BLT and it was great- and came out in less than 5 minutes. They had a nice selection of cakes and pies. But the real charm of this place is all the obscure Americana stuff on the walls AND the old vault in the back, which is essentially a guest book. Literally thousands of people have signed the walls in the vault. They even have a step ladder because the walls are so full that the ceiling and mechanicals are about the only available real estate. Super fun blast from the past place.

Took a detour through Petersburg on our to see the great eclipse and found a fantastic breakfast/bakery that I won't soon forget. Cakes and Coffee Cafe are housed in an old bank on Main Street in downtown Petersburg, Indiana. The dining room is large with a counter and about a dozen Cafe tables. The place is not fancy decorated with vintage baseball memorabilia and toys. The walls are adorned with antique and vintage photos of the area. We were allowed to pick any table but encouraged to take a private room which was a converted bank office complete with original safe. Cinnamon rolls are their specialty so we ordered one ($1.99) with a side of sausage. I ordered 2 eggs with bacon and rye toast ($4.99). The menu offered a variety of coffee options which we enjoyed until our food arrived. When the food arrived, it was clear that the rye toast bread was homemade and the sausage was fresh. Our waitress said the bread is made by local Amish and the sausage comes from a butcher in Evansville. The ingredients were indeed fresh and tasted wonderful. The cinnamon roll was definitely made from scratch and sinfully good, perhaps addictive. I only wish the preserves had been homemade. The service was friendly and she kept our coffee cups full. They had a case full of delicious looking cakes and pies.

If you are traveling I-69 between Indianapolis and Evansville this is the perfect place to stop for breakfast (served all day), coffee and pastries or a home cooked lunch. It's well worth the one mile drive from the Interstate to 618 Main Street in Petersburg. Located in a 130 year-old former bank building, Cakes and Coffee Cafe offers wonderful in-house prepared pastries, gourmet coffees and daily lunch specials. A favorite of the locals, you will want to browse owner Randy Harris' collection of historic memorabilia that graces the walls. And signing your name inside the old bank vault adds to the experience.Really, this is a place not to be missed.

Unique location with friendly wait staff & management. Built in an old bank, they have turned the vault into a makeshift baseball museum & the teller counters into seating. If you go, be sure to sign the "I was in the vault" wall. 1. They made a fresh pot of coffee for me, instead of giving me the usual mid-afternoon dregs. Huge points for that! 2. Food was delicious! We shared a hot ham & cheese sandwich, and they gave us each of us our half sandwich on our own plate, with chips & a pickle for each of us. They also brought free samples of their daily special, "Roast Beef Manhattan," which we will order next time! 3. Nice people. While we were eating, a local kid came in to buy a soda, but didn't have enough money. The girl behind the counter gave him a free soda. The owner even gave us a "tour" of the old bank building. 4. The desserts looked delicious, but we had no room. Another day!

This place is super unique! One could stay for hours just looking around at memorabilia after enjoying freshly prepared breakfast, lunch or any of their decadent desserts. I highly recommend their cinnamon rolls! If in the area, this place is a must!
