pretty nice omakase experience and a good addition to LA. Some notable information- The omakase area upstairs is intimiate to stay the least. nearly shoulder to shoulder with guests and very close proximity to the chef. You can have a relatively private conversation if you're with someone else but expect others to be able to hear almost everything.- The stuffiness of the atmosphere will depend on the other people you're dining with. My experience wasn't too bad.- Solid dishes and sushi. I really preferred the vinegar ratio on the rice and their ginger. Overall fish quality was solid, one negative is selection, I expected better given the peak timing of winter/spring.- Got sake pairing - decent selection. The cocktails are quite good too. Love the idea of cocktail hour right before.

Phenomenal sushi. 10/10 experience. I won't go into to much detail like the other reviews, but I will say this place is a must try. I brought my boyfriend here for his birthday on 12/7. Upgrade to the caviar and truffle options, it was delightful and definitely worth it. We just had such a special time and the intimacy of the restaurant takes it to the next level. I am very grateful for this experience and I will be going back again soon with my friends :)

Quick TL;DR: Overall a solid omakase experience but took a star off given that for the price point, the standard menu left a bit more to be desired compared to other omakases I've been too. If you're looking for excellent service and an artful omakase experience, this place is top notch at it though. We arrived for a 530 seating, which the first 30mins is hanging around for check in while the chefs get set up. You can sit at the terrace or bar with the option to pay for drinks here.Onto the actual experience, the attention to detail is great and they give you the option to upgrade here if you want add ons like caviar and truffle slices. I went with the standard menu, which everything was well presented and tasty. Favorite dishes included the tuna nigiris and the "tamale looking" cod fish dish was very unique. At the end of the day, $300 experience met expectations but I've had other places offer quite a bit more in quality ingredients at this price point so you're coming more for the preparation experience done to each dish, which is where they excel in with the level of detail.

In LA for 24 hours. Googled "omakase" and Udatsu popped up. No availabilities on Tock. No phone number on Yelp. Thank goodness Google Maps had the phone number. Called them 1 minute after they opened. The guy that picked up went and checked if there was any seating left. BAM! That man is the REAL MVP.17 Course - absolute 10/10. I actually think it might be the best I've had. I'm gonna have to start an omakase journal so I can remember where I ate and how each of them rank. What really stuck with me was the simplicity of each fish. You get to taste the true flavor of the fish with very minimal modifications. Slight flair on each, versus some places that overdo it.Very intimate space upstairs, seats 8. Starts @ 6:00PM but you hang out at the bar downstairs first. Bar downstairs is all concrete, love the vibe.My least favorite - Seiko Crab Nigiri, TamagoyakiMy absolute fave - everything else.Absolutely killer experience. Thoroughly enjoyed this experience. $300 total w/ tax and tip.

Udatsu sushi blew me away! I was so excited to try this new omakase restaurant out after hearing about its impressive background coming from Japan. The overall experience was truly amazing, from the quality of the fish to the outstanding service and overall ambiance. The chef was so impressive and courteous the entire night, his precision with our whole meal was truly a craft. I'm looking forward to coming back one day and telling friends about this place, there's a lot of top tier sushi in LA and Udatsu is on the top of this list.

The utmost BEST experience I have had since my visit to Japan. A beautiful, intimate omakase setting, you find yourself in awe of the chefs work with each dish. Within each dish there is an art piece awaiting, with fresh, unique flavors. You will absolutely love each one presented to you. Proper and delicious nigiri rice is no easy task and udatsu knows what they're doing. Well worth the money, I'd be back over and over again.

We spent the first half hour of our reservation at the bar (drinks not included in the prepaid price). Afterwards, you're brought up to the dining area where they take your coat and gently push you into the seating. There were containers underneath the seats for purses and there was a single occupant restroom (a luxurious experience with a Toto bidet and Le Labo soap/lotion). We were taken through a 17 course experience that was almost meditative in its nature. Watching the food get prepared was impressive and the ingredients were so fresh. There is the option for an even more elevated meal that includes caviar and truffles for $75 more. The menu changes each month but staples like the smoked tuna, uni, and tuna roll remain month to month. The smoked tuna was my absolute favorite although other dishes were also strong contenders. Apparently, all the tuna from our meal was from Japan. For instance, the Seasonal vegetable roll had Swiss, kale, mushrooms and deep fried kale chips with aged soy sauce. The Seiko crab nigiri (similar to a snow crab) and the sea urchin with fried nori nigiri (Santa Barbara uni and Japanese Hokkaido uni) were a mix of both local and Japanese ingredients. The tuna is all from Japan and had such delicious flavor. At the end, they brought out the bill and individually thanked each party for dining. It truly felt like such special treatment and I enjoyed being pampered. In a town where half the Michelin star winners seem to be a Japanese omakase specialist, Udatsu Sushi earns its place among the premier sushi omakase destinations in LA.This freshman located in Hollywood occupies a different zip cope from its brethren that are located in Little Tokyo or on the West Side. There is valet parking downstairs, which I would recommend versus trying to circle the block for hard to find parking. Once the host knows that you are dining at Udatsu, you are whisked upstairs to the outdoor patio, which provides a nice bird's eye vantage point of Hollywood. There is an optional 30 minute cocktail hour, which we skipped, but did spend a few minutes enjoying the view on the patio under the heat lamps.Once we were escorted inside, we were treated to an intimate 8-seat counter with a modern interior that integrated traditional Japanese elements like shoji screens that revealed storage for plates and bowls (nice touch!). The bar stool seats are heavy and the staff literally push you closer to the bar. There is an opportunity to plus up your omakase with things like caviar and truffles, but we skipped because it didn't seem like there were any additional courses - we felt that we did not miss out on anything by skipping that. While my perspective was a bit mixed in the beginning as there were a few fruit flies buzzing around the counter - one even fell into my sake, which was promptly replaced when I mentioned it to the staff - my POV changed after the first few courses. Udatsu's approach is familiar yet different from other omakases that we have enjoyed. The shari is warm and flavored - each batch is plucked out from the rice cooker by the chef and covered to keep it warm. The rice granules were a bit chewier versus soft, which we appreciated. The cuts of fish are thicker and bigger, often to help the chef mold the fish and the rice together so it doesn't fall apart. While there were a few familiar cuts of fish, many of the versions were unique. The Hokkaido crab sushi. The vertical of tuna sushi. The white and red miso soup with grated mountain yam. Even the egg custard was less spongy. With each bite, we were presented with a familiar, yet new style of sushi that we hadn't tried elsewhere. We were so pleased with the quality of the craftsmanship that merit Michelin consideration. The service is also what makes Udatsu special. We were treated to an unexpected birthday cake slice to celebrate a birthday that was insanely delicious - almost tempted to ask for the recipe. Delicious, fresh ginger was immediately replenished when our plate was empty of ginger. Even the valet had our cars ready when we came out of the restaurant. It's all the little touch points that make Udatsu a fine dining destination worth experiencing. Udatsu will definitely be on our list of omakase places that we will be revisiting in the future.

We had to reschedule once and the day we did come there was a parade going on and almost the entire sunset blvd was closed down. It was just a huge mess trying to find parking near the restaurant. Flustered we decided to park and it was over a mile away. We powered walk to the restaurant only to find out we weren't really late as they were running late too. Anyways, after the epic adventure of trying to get to the restaurant, we got seated at the patio to have cocktail. We had one cocktail and sat there quite some time before they finally took us in to dinner. They offer you their upgrade menu which just basically has caviar and truffle added. We skipped that. They do offer wine or sake pairing for additional cost too. We skipped that too. We were starving and I just wanted to eat. We were there until close to 11at night and it was quite late for dinner but good thing we had time to digest our food to walk that long way to get back to our car! The food was excellent and my favorite was the variety of tuna they gave. The service was great too. Quaint ambiance with just 8 people in the room to dine with. It was definitely an experience to try once in your lifetime.
