My husband and I had never been. A great stand and apparently hadn't changed much since 1946. They have a very nice covered eating area and an additional inside dinning area next to the patio. The hot dogs were very good. They are served in hotdog holder that has a picture of a cute dogs head at one end and hot dog sticks out a little bit at the other end as The Tail of the Pup. There was a menu that was Polynesian themed. Apparently, there is a Polynesian speakeasy behind the Tail of the Pup stand. There's a button to be pushed to enter. Delicious hot dogs, very clean eating areas. Friendly staff. They do parties. Don't just pass this restaurant, it's a bit of history right in West Hollywood.

I hate to ding this business because the group that owns it has done a pretty good job of preserving classic landmark restaurants and bars in LA. However this one is wrong on so many levels. Twice I visited this location ... just to give it a second chance and both times it was the worst hot dog I have ever eaten at 3 times the price.I grew up in the 80's before you could go to the ballpark and get Bobby Flay pork belly or hand rolled sushi. When I grew up the ballparks served hot dogs, which had been sitting in the same hot water in inning 1 as they were in inning 9. Bland, tasteless hot dogs made of who knows what part of the animal, yet I'd choose those everytime over the hot dogs this place serves. For a group that speaks of preservation, they pretty much decimated this building, making it into a weird, sterile Johnny Rockets type of fake vintahe diner. This was the former 'Doors workshop' where they recorded LA Woman and Jim Morrison lived across the street stumbling to sessions. It was a Mexican restaurant for a while and then a cheesy bar/lounge called L'Scorion. Both locations sucked but they preserved the integrity of the building. Tail of the Pup gutted the building ruining forever such a historuc rock and roll space. There is still a plaque in the now gender neutral bathroom that says Jim Morrison recorded his vocals in the bathroom ... the rest of the Doors workshop is now basically no more. The hot dog itself is over spiced with odd flavours. It's small and kind of crunchy and rubbery. They put some sort of soggy onion topping on which had me belching a bacony onion taste for days. My stomach was doing gymnastics for about half a day after putting down two of these odd-tasting hot dogs. I've had better hot dogs at a 7-11 at 10:30 p.m.Overall, its such a shame what was done to the building and the fact that a hot dog here costs what a baseball steak at The HMS Bounty cost 4 years ago. I regretted eating it a few hours after both times. Again, I do wish I liked the product a little better because they did such a good job with The Formosa, Harlowe and Sassafrass.

OMG this is a LA gem! Left the Lucky Tiki and this place is located right underneath. What more can you possibly ask for? Hot dogs, corn dogs, chili cheese fries, burgers, you name it! It's a Hollywood staple. Places like this need to last forever. If you go to Shake Shake Shack instead you a special kind of a$$ hole. There is really nothing left like this place. Please support old school Hollywood business. Otherwise we will have nothing left but chain restaurants...boring!!!!!Food was great, ambiance was great, chill and relaxing. Great for vegans and meat eaters.Support local!!!I mean Jim Morrison recorded an album where the bathroom is located, like come on!!!!

Pricey for the food items but the overall taste was good but my only complaint was the questionable overly oily chili. It was super oily and the meat was weird tasting and flat. I was expecting more of ground beef but it was oddly too similar to patee dog food. Yuck.

Tail o' the Pup is a pretty cool, casual spot on Santa Monica Blvd in West Hollywood. I came here for my first time just a couple weeks ago despite walking by it before countless times. To eat, I kept it simple with a corn dog. To drink, I ordered an IPA (not pictured). Both of us enjoyed our experience and wouldn't be opposed to coming back. Service was relatively quick, and the food was delicious. Don't forget to order some fries!

Went upstairs to the Lucky Tiki but enjoyed a chili cheese dog and coconut shrimp from the Pup. You can order upstairs and they bring it to you. Both were tasty with our tiki drinks. I really liked the hot dog's flavor on its own and the bun was super moist.

An iconic spot tucked away in the middle of downtown West Hollywood! If you're in the area, it is definitely worth a visit. Clearly identifiable by the giant hot dog and bun front counter, Tail o' the Pup has been around since the time when it made sense to construct giant hot dog and bun structures to order from. Place your order here for once of their many time-specific hot dogs and then head back to the larger restaurant and seating area. Inside, you'll find photos of many of the celebrities who have been photographed at the landmark as well as pick up your meal. The food is good! I kind of expected them to half-ass the food, but I genuinely liked it! The dogs are a little different; don't expect a Ballpark sausage. They're a little tougher but flavorful and I thought the fries were spot on!There's plenty of seating, inside and out with two floors to choose from. And if you see a bunch of people in tropical shirts and floral dresses hanging out by the pickle barrel, don't worry about it. Tail o' the Pup is still around because it is unique, actually good, and worth a stop and a photo!

I just got a dog (with onions, mustard, jalapeno sauce, and sauerkraut). I honestly wasn't expecting much because... a hot dog is a hot dog. But, it actually was really good! the bun was nicely toasted, the dog itself was very flavorful, and all the toppings were great. Obviously, it's not cheap for just a hot dog, but it was surprisingly delicious!!

Ok, I love veggie hot dogs because I am a vegetarian so anywhere that serves veggie dogs AND lets me add on customizations has a special place in my heart! This place is legendary, dogs friendly, and has great veggie dogs!! I would definitely come back when I'm in the area! Parking is a bit of a hassle but it's absolutely worth it for the food! There's a secret tiki bar upstairs too that I'll leave a separate review for but atail o' the Pup is one of my favorites to go to with my golden puppers!
