Mokkoji Shabu Shabu

We had an interesting first visit here, but overall great. Originally the wait was 40 minutes and I was starving and it was pretty chilly outside :( To our luck, they offered outdoor seating to anyone who was willing to and I volunteered as tribute. They gave us a 2 drinks on the house and we had our table and broths out within minutes! Though it was a tad cold out, the broth immediately warmed us up. Their spicy chili oil drops are not a joke! If you're into spicy, deffff recommend getting 1-2 drops added (at your discretion of course). Came here to meet friends and the couple who live in Cerritos suggested this spot. Definitely a trek for me from Pasadena so was really hoping it would be good. Parking was easy it's in a large strip mall with a big lot. We had a group of 6 adults and 2 kids so we had to split up tables and definitely hard to communicate cuz the space between the 2 tables was really big. Not really ideal for larger groups . As for the food and service, pretty blah. It's not AYCE so you do order by "size". I think the portion sizes for the accompanying veggies and noodles is super tiny for what you get and it costs extra for certain broths. The meat was pretty good but nothing to write home about. Service was mediocre. We had to ask for the egg that comes with sukiyaki broth and they rarely refilled the water. For $27+ for the "small" size for brisket, definitely felt kinda ripped off. I personally would not come here again.

I first came across Mokkoji in Irvine, but I am glad it is closer to where I live now. I've been coming here since they opened up and every time I come I never leave disappointed. It's not AYCE but I'd rather pay a little bit more for great quality food. I usually order from the special for 2. Recently, I got the beef sampler. With the beef sampler, it's nice since you get a variety of different cuts to try out. They do give you a lot so go in hungry. Each cut was good and it helped when the owner explained to us which cut was what. It can get busy and you might have to wait for a little bit but it's worth it. (Honestly, you don't even wait that long compared to other places.) The food quality always stays the same. The owners and staff members are always so nice and greet you with care.

You can never go wrong with Mokkoji! The marinated flat iron is good! And the service is always really quick. The soup is delicious and they give a good amount of veggies.

I've heard about Mokkoji for a while and a couple friends raved about it, so my husband and I decided to try it when we were craving shabu.Unlike a lot of other shabu places, Mokkoji is not all you can eat and instead, you order your meats per plate. The reasoning behind this is that they say the meat quality is higher here. Although I'd say the meat quality here is good, I wouldn't say that it was exceptionally better than some of the premium ayce places that I've been to. With that being said, I enjoyed my meal here but do not think that the quality justifies the price. The ambiance was bright and welcoming and the service here is really good. I appreciated that the person helping us offered recommendations and would check up on us every so often. The restaurant is located in a decent sized plaza with ample parking.Overall, I'd say that the shabu and experience here is pretty good, but is just overpriced for what it is.

First time at Mokkoji and it was wonderful! Unfortunately, there was a mixup with our reservation, but they quickly moved tables and sat us outside to accommodate our larger party. The food was delicious! I got the spicy pork broth and Toro - yum!Each meal comes with rice, sauces, and a variety of vegetables. We left totally stuffed!

Food - good options and we got the special for two people where you get to try most if not all the meats. Our favorite is toro belly cut - well seasoned Service - phenomenal Ambiance - okIt is sweater weather so glad we found this place on Yelp on our way to OC. You get to choose the broth (I chose miso and my hubby the spicy pork broth for $1 and $5, extra respectively). Apparently, there are other locations but this one worked out for us - no wait at all. We called when we were 15 minutes away and they placed our name on the waitlist. Parked for free (plenty of parking) and when we checked in, they prepared our spots (we didn't mind being at the "bar") and got sat down within 5 minutes. Where can this happen on Saturday night at 6:30 pm- everywhere there is such a long wait. With all the choices out there, who wants to wait for more than 30 minutes. By the way the special ($109 for two people), came with choice of appetizers (opted for the yummy wings), choice of sake, beer or soda, 3 plates of various meat cuts, side of veggies and noodles and our surprise dessert (haagen dazs ice cream bar- did they know this is my favorite?). Basically, can be pricey with tax and tip but all worth it especially if you are trying to get your healthy protein intake and veggies - perfect meal!

I'm so happy I found out there's a location in Cypress! I first came across Mokkoji in Irvine, but I have been coming to their Cypress location for a little over a year and I can tell you it's just a good, if not better! I love the toro belly beef with the miso broth. It's been my go-to order and never disappoints. The staff here are all so kind and the service is always on point. Even at their busiest, I've never had an issues with service, quality, or cleanliness. Most of the seating is bar style, but there are a few booths for parties of 3+Unfortunately, the seating is limited so I would call ahead to see if they can accommodate larger parties. Side tip--rice and some of the veggies (Napa cabbage, kale, bokchoy) are refillable! I would definitely call myself a regular here and would highly recommend!

If I want high quality Japanese style hot pot, this is my spot. There are places where you can get AYCE (Momo Paradise) and there are places that you can pay $$$$ for AYCE Wagyu (Mikiya, Wagyu House, X Pot), but I like that this place has quality meat options for $$$.My go to order is to get a "special for 2" of their "share beef set" to share with my wife. She likes the Spicy Pork Broth and I like the Spicy Sukiyaki. It's Japanese spicy, so it's more flavorful than spicy. If you want real spice, then you could ask the server for extra spice and they'll use a medicine dropper to add a few drops of serious heat into your sauces. In our shared meal, we prefer their marinated "toro fatty belly" and it comes with a huge order of meat, 2 pints of draft beer, an appetizer, and ice cream. If you choose a nice, fatty cut, then you will be pretty satisfied with the meat quality. My reasoning for this being 4 stars rather than 5 stars is that if you were to choose the wrong type of meat or if you don't order enough meat, then your experience will likely be suboptimal. Apparently, you can get refills on the veggies, so I'll try to ask for that next time! What I love about Mokkoji, however, is that the quality and value that I get with the special is ample for two and it's delicious!

This is the THIRD time this has happened to me here, and it's so extremely rude. This time I just walked out. Whenever I go to this location I ask to be sat on the lower seats and if I'm with less than a party of 4, WE HAVE TO sit at the bar. The first time was annoying but we just rolled with it, then the service was bad, she just never came back to fill up or check on anything. So we left irritated and unsatisfied . Second time I went to give it another shot, same girl, same rules and lack of service. This time, I went because it's where a friend wanted to try, so it's been about a year and I'm thinking surely things have gotten better. Nope, but this time I have a broken hip and a broken femur bone, I told the girl we had to sit on the lower seats not the bar. She said no, I said "I CAN'T sit up at the bar, so we're going to have to leave this time if we can't sit on the lower seats." She shrugged it off and said it was policy. We left but waited outside because I was pretty mad and beside myself. I just can't get over how rude this place is. Mind you there were only 3 other parties in here on this night, it's not like it was full and we needed to make room. So if you have any ailment that prohibits you from jumping up on a bar stool you're out of luck.
