My dinner at Makomae was exceptional. The staff is friendly and helpful. Service is quick and plates go out quickly. Pricing is more than reasonable, the fish is fresh and presentation is appetizing. Food- The baby bombs were a unique dish, they're stuffed mushroom with fried octopus 5/5. The chirashi bowl is delicious and filling the fish was fresh and tasty 5/5. Do not skip the green tea panna cotta! Easily my favorite part of this meal and homemade 5/5I'll definitely be back here. I've never used these words before but it's deserving of the term hidden gem !

This is for those times when you want a "casual sushi night" but don't want to compromise quality. They serve fresh, high-quality fish flown in from Japan in a no-frills, hole-in-the-wall space. The restaurant is in an unassuming plaza but the parking area in front of the restaurant was nearly full and inside was packed. This place gets busy on the weekends and they only take reservations for sushi bar seating. We ended up putting our names down and waited about 25 minutes for a table on a Friday night. I ordered the premium chirashi bowl with Hokkaido uni and was really impressed by the freshness of the fish for the price point. It does come with the fried shrimp head too, in case you were wondering. I am typically still hungry after eating chirashi bowls but this was filling and came with miso soup and a small salad. I also highly recommend getting the corn tempura. It is so unique and delicious and would come back for that alone. The staff here is amazing and are so attentive. Our server brought me another cup of hot water before I was even finished with my first.I think the term "hidden gem" is often overused but it truly did feel like we walked into somewhere special when we opened the door and will definitely be back.

Love coming to Makomae for my omakase needs and a la carte cravings.Friend is a regular here and brought me for my first visit. We did omakase and it's the kind where the sushi chef keeps the sushi coming until you tell them stop. We must have had 20 rounds before we were full and moved onto green tea ice cream for dessert! Everything was so good, I wanted it to keep going, but had to call defeat after 90 minutes. I had a weekend lunch for my second visit and got the two lunch specials from the sushi bar: sushi and sashimi combination (6 pcs sushi, 6 pc sashimi, 1/2 tuna cut roll for $16.95) and the assorted sushi (8 pc sushi and 1/2 tuna cut roll for $15.95). Also added in the corn tempura (one of my favorites from the first visit - $6.95), fried oysters (3 pc for $10.95) and the shrimp and vegetable tempura ($9.95). The two lunch specials also come with miso soup and salad and were quite a good value with the amount of fresh seafood included. I enjoyed the appetizers selected and would love to try the karaage and baby bomb next time! They were pretty busy on both visits so service was okay, but a little slow. They forgot the beer that BF ordered and they didn't come by to refill our waters, but they were good with clearing the empty plates off our table. We definitely felt we were in Japan though, as the servers and sushi chefs conversed in Japanese during our stay. Best to come in small groups, as it's easier to seat groups of 2 at the tables or sushi bar than groups of 4 or larger. Plenty of parking in the plaza, though the spots can get a little tight.

This is my go-to place in this area when I'm craving a quality chirashi bowl! The fish is always fresh, and the price ~$38 for this portion beats other sushi places with comparable fish quality who would normally charge $50. It also comes with a side of salad and miso soup. Their chicken karaage was juicy and crisp. The restaurant is small, and there can be a wait, so it's good for casual small group hangouts.

Omakase lunch is HUGE! I think the portion is just like dinner. The lunch omakase is $150 per person but guarantee the fish quality is great and fresh. They have a list of fresh fish delivered from Japan, such as the miso kani (crab), which is my all-time favorite item, and Kurage (jellyfish). It is a small but cozy traditional Japanese restaurant with all Japanese waitresses and chefs. It feels like you are in Japan instead of LA. Great service! It's one of the best choices of sushi / omakase in the East LA area with reasonable prices and great quality.

Makomae has been around for a long time. They're a homey eatery on the far side of Diamond Bar. I've been a couple of times, but have never left a review! Clam soup-- super light and flavorful. The hot broth was exactly what I needed to soothe my throat. Chirashi-- my favorite piece of seafood was the amaebi. I love that they fry up the shrimp head for you. The tamago was well made too and the toro is always a great fatty piece to round out the meal with. They don't overload your bowl with rice, but I would have minded if they had since their rice is well-seasoned. Kaki fry-- hot, juicy with a panko crustSeared beef tongue-- chewy, beefy, topped with a seasoning salt

I absolutely absolutely love this place. This is a mom and pop shop so expect such vibes. My husband and I travel to eat sushi and to this day Mako-san is still serving us the best sushi. We have been to Giro's and it's nothing compared to the love that they put in their food. Highly recommend also getting the barbecue beef bowl. This is my absolute favorite sushi place.

Trust your device's navigation and it will pay off because this place is amazingTheir sashimi are all fresh cut and the quality of the meats are all top tier. The sashimi platter we ordered offered us a little bit of each, and everything was great. The beef tongue has a chewy and tender texture, couldn't tell it wasn't just normal beef at first. Overall great quality of sashimi, 100% worth it's price
