I recently dined at Kinkan near Silverlake for their Omakase lunch, and it was a memorable experience. Parking was a bit of a challenge in the area, but we eventually found street parking. We arrived a little early, and since the restaurant wasn't open yet, we waited outside with another couple.Once the doors opened, we were seated at the intimate counter, which only has about 10 seats. There are also tables that can seat around 20 people. Chef Nan was present throughout lunch, and she made the experience even better with her engaging and friendly demeanor. As for the food, everything was delicious and flowed beautifully from course to course. I was particularly surprised by how well the crab curry and shumai worked together--those ended up being my favorite dishes of the meal. The curry was unbelievably good!We decided to upgrade our Chirashi bowl by adding Uni, which was a fantastic decision. It was my first time watching a chef make one, and I was amazed at how much time and effort goes into creating such a complex bowl. For dessert, we couldn't resist trying both options on the menu that day. The mango sticky rice ice cream bar was definitely the star--so creative and full of flavor. The mochi waffle with ice cream, while enjoyable, didn't impress as much.Overall, I'm eager to return to Kinkan for dinner, and I wouldn't mind coming back for lunch either. The quality of the food and the thoughtful progression of the meal really stood out.

What a unique experience! Sometimes you just know from the get go it gonna be rememberable. We were greeted with smile (even tho I just realized I messed up my reservation and book a different date) and set on the counter, it's this kinda space where the chef is running a show and the all counter is the crowd, it also allowing people to interact a little and it's really nice. Food is nothing short than great! Taste, presentation even the idea behind each dish, all are amazing. The thought came to my mind was that I'm in a chef table episode, looks like chef has a great story to tell. How good it was? We parted with a hug

Not only was the Thai-Japanese tasting menu delicious (omg, the creamy tom yum + hokkaido scallop on a seaweed chip!), the setting was cozy and intimate; and it almost felt like we were dining in the chef's home, as she prepared the early courses in front of us, informally describing what was being served, then toasting us with (free! ) "welcome sake", making her way from table to table, chatting with everyone and cracking jokes. This was no "silent and serious" type of fine-dining tasting menu experience. As chef Nan said - Kinkan is more like a word-of-mouth speakeasy. A truly memorable 2.5-hour Valentine's dinner experience and we can't wait for the next tasting menu. We will be back!

Japan meets Thailand fusion. Cute, fun, intimate setting. It is a tasting menu. The service was great I wanted to taste their 3 white wines and they opened three new bottles for us just to taste. I suggest the Berthollier white wine. It is easy to drink and went well with all the dishes. However after eating the seafood dish baby lobster or large shrimp (I couldn't tell at this point lol) the wine tasted very different after that it really changed the pallet which was very interesting in a fun way it surprised me. Anyway the staff was awesome so fun and relatable very interactive. We had a great time and would love to come back again.

Kinkan had been on my list for a while, and I finally got to experience this Thai-Japanese fusion omakase style dinner for our anniversary. We made a reservation for Saturday at 8 pm and were seated immediately upon arrival. We chose bar seating to watch Chef Nan in action, which added to the intimate and well-designed ambiance.Chef Nan is incredible, showcasing her skills with flair and making us feel completely comfortable with her warm hospitality. The service was impeccable. The tasting menu, "Sakura No Hana," was extraordinary. Each of the 10 dishes, plus dessert, was a masterpiece in flavor, texture, and presentation. It was truly an experience for the senses, making it hard to pick a favorite dish. Here's what we enjoyed:- Dashi marinated ikura, nori- Dry-aged chutoro almond tartlet- Hotaru Iika (firefly squid) with sweetened Thai seafood sauce- Onsen tamago in dashi broth- Cherry blossom hamachi crudo- Spring tempura, ume somen, fish curry- Sazae (Japanese sea snail) with tom yum- Bangladesh prawn baked with glass noodles- Sake steamed live hairy crab- Binchotan olive-fed A5 wagyuTo make our anniversary even more special, they surprised us with an extra mochi ice cream dessert made with Milo childhood favorite of mine. It was a really nice of them!Kinkan is a fantastic spot for special occasions or a cozy date night. I'll definitely keep this place on my list and can't wait to try future menus!

Came here to celebrate my bday. Generally 7/10, I think it's a little overpriced. The aged tuna, has so much tendon and very fishy. The Coconut mochi as ending dessert, makes me nausea after, definitely not worth $250/each. I can tell they put effort into the food, but it tastes just alright! Japanese and Thai is an interesting combo, but I think it tastes better on their own. The service is great. The restaurant is small. Street parking. Generally good experience, but once in a lifetime is good for me.

A quaint homegrown vibe with an intimate setting. The tasting menu was delivered at a very casual pace ... a little slower than I expected, but no bother with great company. Every dish was executed with precision and delivered with a smile. A fantastic mash up of flavors and textures.

Just had the new year themed dinner set and every course was amazing. The atmosphere was very intimate, chef Nan had sake with us at every course while explaining the theme of the dishes served. Everyone at the restaurant was super friendly and the whole night felt like dinner at a friend's house except your friend is a top notch chef. I would go back frequently since they update their menu every 2-3 months. The to go bento boxes also looked great, would try that for take out some day.
