To many, Boyle Heights is the mecca of Mexican food in Los Angeles. El Tepeyac Café remains one of the landmark restaurants in the neighborhood, attracting loyal patrons and legions of new customers for nearly 70 years. A family-owned business, the Rojas family has prepared delicious, traditional Mexican cuisine with recipes passed down through generations. This quaint cafe is arguably one of the most famous restaurants where you can enjoy a burrito. El Tepeyac Café serves some of LA's biggest, tastiest burritos, including the Manuel's Special - a gargantuan 5-pound burrito! Not to be outdone, their taco and enchilada combination plates are wildly popular and what drew me to the restaurant. A combo includes a huge hard-shelled corn tortilla taco stuffed with chicken or beef, enchilada in red sauce, and rice and beans. The portions are generous and the price, at $13.22, is very reasonable. I enjoyed my dish but did not feel anything was exceptional. If you are dining alone like I was during their busy lunch hours, you will have to eat at the counter and be lucky if there is an open seat. Good food, large serving sizes, reasonably priced dishes, and great service. I look forward to trying one of their famous burritos on my next visit here.

have been coming to this Boyle Heights institution, which we still call Manuel's, for over 40 years. Our parents brought us here practically every weekend for breakfast, when there was invariably a long but fast-moving line, and proprietor Manuel (Rojas) himself offering tequila shots at the door. Back then and maybe now, they only had menudo on the weekends. Back then and maybe now, lots of USC folks came here. Manuel has passed on, but his family still runs the place, and it hasn't changed its appearance at all, and the menu is pretty much the same too. Service is still quick and friendly. Ordering to-go at the window outside is equally quick. They now work with some delivery apps too.My go-to dishes then and now are the huevos rancheros, machaca burrito (not the Okie machaca), and the tacos and taquitos. The taste and size of the dishes have not changed. Their ranchero sauce is chunky with onions, peppers and cheese, their salsa moderately spicy. Their guacamole is loose because it has both lettuce and tomato. It's nice sometimes when things are as you always remember them.

This is an iconic staple in the Los Angeles area. I've been there a handful of times but have never left a review. I ordered a hard shell taco and it was good. The hard shell, the loads of shredded beef and cheese and with the salsa was in my opinion, delicious and flavorful. We also ordered the original Hollenbeck burrito wet with cheese. The burrito had lots of flavor, especially the pork meat. We sat at the counter and our waitress was this sweet older lady. Her name was Mary. The chips and salsa were good too. Go early as it's a small restaurant and if it's busy, you'll have to wait.

The portions are huge here! We got the chile colorado, taquitos dorados, and an asada burrito. We really liked the taquitos dorados and the chile colorado. My husband didn't like the asada burrito that much. The guacamole and beans were delicious! He wanted to order a drink but they don't serve drinks. Although they did bring out a shot of tequila on the house! The place is really small inside and they have an outdoor area. It does move pretty quickly though and we didn't have to wait long.

I was looking for the best menudo in LA and this place was ranked #1 on Yelp. I got to say, it definitely delivered on the menudo!I think they have their own parking lot too, I went on a sunday at 10 AM and waited about 45 minutes until we were seated. But once we were, they came by and took our orders, within 10 minutes our food was on our table. The place was pretty packed and it looks like lines do move pretty quickly. The menudo had all the good stuff: tripe, pata (pork feet), tendon, etc. The corn tortillas were so nice and chewy and you can tell it was homemade. They had crazy large portions, I would recommend a small size unless you are HUNGRY.

I've been back again only this time I brought a friend who had not visited in 34 years (him). You should have seen how quickly he wolfed down his dish! Otherwise, I'm pleased to see there was a bit of a line waiting to get in at the lunch hour. It's always a good sign when a place is busy. Aside from covid times... Manuals has always, almost always had a line to get in? Covid wasn't kind to almost any business... Especially restaurants. I guess you'd have to convert your restaurant to heavy delivery only since during covid nobody was coming out in person. Anyways, my Hollanbec (misspelled?) was totally a tornado on my taste buds... Yummy beyond compare. It was a time traveling blast into the past! Yeah I've been coming here for over 40 years... That's how long I've been with my wife... Actually let me think about it... I think I could come in here for almost 50 years? Does that make me some kind of antique at oh Tepeyac? Anyways, is there any other way to justify five stars other than having faithfully been a frequent visitor spanning half a century? Dang... What I'm really trying to say is I would like to award award 50 stars... One for every year!

The food was delicious and served right away. The prices are very reasonable. The staff are very helpful and polite. The place was clean and decent. The only thing is they did not have more of the vegan/vegetraian options. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Food is good along with the service and vibe of an old school legendary place to eat mexican food.Only disappointment was that they offer you chips and then charge you $3 when the bill comes.More the principal than anything.
