Cantaloop Ethiopian Cuisine

Came here long time ago with my son, after church, across the street. Recently stopped by (like in October or November?) and we were craving some boba. New owners. How cool! Smelled good inside! You still can get yogurt and boba and stuff but now with Ethiopian food! Wow! I have to come back, someday, and try the food out! I've had Ethiopian food once before on Fairfax? But how cool is it to get boba or yogurt all in the same place? Thank you for great service! We enjoyed it!

If you love Ethiopian food you should try Cantaloop Ethiopian Cuisine. Located on Hollywood Blvd. right next to Cantaloop Yogurt (reviewers often confuse the two). This is not the yogurt shop, it is just some of the best food on Hollywood Blvd.The place is ever so cute and you can dine indoors or out. They also have take away and delivery. It is ever so clean and it is super comfortable. The prices are fair and the service is just great. We did not have a reservation and I do not know if they take them. There was less than a 5 minute wait for us.All of the food we had was great and we ordered a lot and shared it all.The Awaza Tibis which is beef with onions, red pepper, tomatoes, green chili and black pepper was so flavorful. The Lamb Tibs were amazing. They are simply cubes of selected lamb with onions, chilis and rosemary. You must try their Ethiopian Style Rice which is steamed rice cooked with shredded carrots, onions, turmeric and assorted spices. It is a beautiful yellow and perfect with any dish. Also get their Veggie & Meat Combo. Now this is a lot of food. It is a combination of Doro Wot, Zilzle Tibis, Yebeg Alecha, Yebeg Segawot, Denche Alecha, Gomen, Yemisler Wot, Fosoliya, Rices, Keke Alecha and Shiro. It is the best dish and we will get that again.We just love this place and we hope you do too.

What does Boba Frozen Yogurt Smoothies and Ethiopian food have in common? Cantaloop! LOL I'm going to be honest I likely comitted a crime by getting an iced Ethiopian Spiced Tea with boba but it was good!!! I'm super excited by the variety of vegan options and Ethiopian fare within reach, which is dangerous for me. Service was great and accommodating my wack azz culinary experiment LOL!

*this is a long overdue UPDATED review to replace a previously rushed review*Rather than outright rating this place with a 1-star, I'm going to give it a 2-star hoping that maybe it was just an off day? The one who welcomed us was a lovely and courteous gentleman. The one who brought us our food and prepared it was who I believe to be the manager, Alton(per yelps info). She was quite the opposite of the gentleman who welcomed us. I will say, of the 3 Ethiopian restaurants that I've tried, this was without a doubt the worst by a landslide. Good Ethiopian food is uniquely unbeatable. This place was a massive disappointment in terms of quality of food/ingredients, flavor, customer service, and price versus value.Let's start with the one singular good dish here. The sambusa. A wonderfully flaky pastry filled with ground beef and a spiced sauce that was both slightly sweet and smokey for dipping. Would absolutely recommend.The lamb tibs were seasoned with salt, pepper, onions and rosemary, but completely absent of chiles per advertised. The meat was old tasting, seemingly kept far too long in their fridges to oxidize and on the border of barely passable and safe-to-consume meat. Would not recommend.The alcha doro tibs(white meat chicken) were disgusting in appearance, flavor and texture. No indication of any curry or ginger flavors per advertised. Just dry, bland and dull chicken swimming in an oily sauce. Curry is a prominent, strong and if used properly, amazing flavor component composed of a plethora of spices. It surprised me how this dish yielded absolutely zero flavor from something that could have been so remarkably powerful. Reminiscent of some of the worst food I've ever had the displeasure of trying. Absolutely would NOT recommend.Bread, even when food at a restaurant is bad can typically be a saving grace. At least from my own experiences. This injera didn't fit the bill of saving grace unfortunately. It also tasted old and stale and lacked any semblance of bounce/sponginess that injera bread has. Perhaps enjoying the bread with the food could've made it better? Maybe, if the food was palatable, but two failed dishes together don't fix anything. Would not recommend.Lastly their Ethiopian salad was a poor mockery of a very simple and already basic salad. Lettuce , tomatoes and a poorly made lemon vinaigrette. Literally. That was it. They couldn't have put in less effort if they tried. The price was $10 for less than $1 worth of ingredients and offered as an INCOMPLETE Ethiopian salad. Mind you, at $10 that's half the price of their entrees. This was an absolute disgrace. Would not recommend.I was raised in a family where we didn't waste food. My partner and I did our best to try and stomach the food. We still threw a lot of it away. The alcha doro tibs particularly was unpalatable. 100% of that was wasted. The best experiences here were the courteous gentleman, the sambusa pastry, the water and leaving. Don't waste your time or money here. There are far better options for flavor, quality and price .... especially when you're in LA. Strongly advising to go elsewhere.Lastly, keep in mind, any photos attached to this review were taken near the end. We actually forgot to take the photos ahead of time, so hence the half eaten food or lack of pictures of discussed food in the review.

Great food,wonderful ambience and delightful owner!We ordered a meat veggie combo platter which was big enough for three. Have leftovers for tomorrow!Highly recommend this new Ethiopian restarant! Check it out!

The fish dish was large in proportion and good. The veggie dish was good but i wish it had more of everything. It took a long while to order and get our food because the owner was by herself. We had an emergency and had to dash so we couldn't stay to enjoy the presentation of the coffee. Next time.

I've gone to 3 different Ethiopian restaurants to try this type of food. I was disappointed every time until my wife brought me here. When I tell you the food was amazing? The food was amazing- you hear me? If you wanna step outside the box with the culture of food you're eating then come here.The food was beyond flavorful, it wasn't soggy, or undercooked, the injera wasn't overly fermented, it was amazing. The fish was cooked to perfection because the entire spine came out in one pull, the outside of the fish was still crispy while the inside was hot and steamy and full of flavor. The sabusas were CRISPPPYYYY and PACKED full of flavor and the SAAUUCCEE?!All in all most definitely a 10 out of 10. The service was still great even after the owner was left on her own today, the vibe was great because it was so relaxing. I can say without a doubt, you won't regret coming here!

I had the great pleasure of trying their delicious food when they catered a holiday party for battered and struggling women and their children. They were so gracious and kind. They donated all the food and even thought to bring hot chocolate! The food was really good and comforting. Their food is the best and so are they.

The food is good here. I've ordered take out Ethiopian food and it has been one of my go to places for that. Even though my first review for the service from the barista doesn't seem to change I'm updating my review to reflect on the amazing Ethiopian food and the people that are prepping the food take credit!
