The Whale & Ale- Gastropub

We really missed this place after a year of remodeling/change of ownership. After a grand reopening, we enjoyed a lovely evening of finger food and drinks!The full menu isn't yet available - but the soft opening menu is full of wonderful dishes! Let's be real - any genuine/classic pub can be measured by the fish & chips + the selection of beers - and this place excelled on both counts!The girls & I noticed that the Whale & Ale has a homey, welcoming feel - it isn't the sexiest spot in town, but it is a perfect choice to pop in for some drinks + a bite with friends. We will all be back!

I loved the previous Whale & Ale, and was sad to see it close....but it's opened again, better than ever! It's maintained its old world warm appeal but cleaned up and elevated. The new owners, Tomas (and wife Loni) and Mardo, have taken a lot of care to make your dining experience memorable. Mardo walks amongst the restaurant and ensures everyone has an exceptional experience. Neither are new to the restaurant scene, and are dedicated to old school hospitality. That's a personal touch that's been lost in new trendy corporate restaurants. I love that they incorporate this into to the dining experience...friggen love it!They've started out with a basic menu with intention to expand, happening very soon I heard. I had the shepherd's pie. It was delicious! The Guinness ground beef was rich and flavorful, the mashers light and fluffy. I've heard several people say the fish and chips are as good, and the W&A favorite. Can't wait to try more of the menu when they roll it out!The San Pedro dining scene is expanding, and it's about time! Tiny tidbit fact: the front of the restaurant storefront was in the movie Eurovision with Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams. If you haven't seen it, it's pretty ridiculously good. ;)

Wow. Really good food here. Came in to have a drink and use the restroom. Guinness came out with the perfect pour. Tasted great. Rusty nail was tasty. Espresso martini with bourbon is chuggable. For food we ordered fried green tomatoes, Shepard's Pie, and bread pudding. All absolutely yummy. A bit pricey for portion size but it doesn't disappoint. Probably the best bread pudding I've ever had. So moist and yummy. Try this spot for sure!

The jazz trio on Friday night is outstanding!!! Their rendition of "Ain't Nobody by Chaka Khan" was AMAZING!Alexis provided service with a bubbly smile and cheery disposition. I hear the Whale Burger is outstanding so that's my goal next time.

Loved our experience here tonight! The service was so kind and attentive. The restaurant itself looks gorgeous. I love how they somehow made it look vintage and classic, yet modern all at the same time. We didn't get to try the food yet, but the menu looked great and we can't wait to try it the next time we come. We saw other folks order food, and their food looked yummy! Particularly the fish and chips!

I'm so happy that the Whale & Ale has reopened. The owners of Compagnon Bistro have partnered with Mardo. They have transformed this place.What a great addition to the neighborhood. I absolutely love the fish and chips.I also had the fried green tomatoes the other day and they are pretty legit. I have to say. That Caesar salad hits just right! I was there on Friday night and was pleasantly surprised by the band. They have live music on Fridays and apparently the musician used to tour with Santana. Fun jam session will definitely be back. Oh I almost forgot the margaritas are so delicious. Made from scratch my hubby had the espresso martini and loved it.!

Hooray for a new era of the Whale and Ale! The fish and chips are light and delicious, shepherd's pie a delight, clam chowder is a must, and lemon tart divine! Kick things off with the ploughman's!

IT'S OPEN!!!The have my favorite beer: London Pride. Mardo the new owner is very conscientious with 20 years of experience! They have made some nice improvements without losing its original vibe. Great, friendly service.

San Pedro is really a breakfast town so the few dinner places need to really shine after dark. Sadly The Whale n Ale is just merely ok. Steak Pub burger needed something to make it 'English'- ditch the pepper rings and replace with grilled mushroom in HP Sauce! use thick chip shop fries! a grilled tomato ...anything! Shepherd's Pie was decent but for $25 it should come with some salad greens or steamed veg. Food- acceptable. Service- perfunctory though who I assume is the owner did check in on our table. $85 for 2 is a bit steep on a sleepy Thursday.
