A friend of mine found this place when we were looking for somewhere to have dinner before heading to Astra Lumina and this popped up (literally a five minute drive away). For starters it is a wonderfully spacious place with a good parking lot. We also arrived before the rush so we had plenty of parking space and the restaurant was not loud or overcrowded. It's a clean and modern aesthetic with decent ventilation, meaning you don't end up leaving smelling like tempura after your meal. The staff is good, friendly enough and quick. Our food arrived pretty quickly and was absolutely fantastic. I remember saying, once we sat down, I have a feeling this is one of those hidden unknown gems that has epic sushi. I was right haha because every roll we ordered was spectacular, as was the heart attack (stuffed jalapeños). We ordered the habanero salmon, spicy albacore, dynamite, and IOU rolls, all in soy paper. We barely had leftovers to take home. I probably would have wiped them out had we not ordered dessert! Tempura fried green tea ice cream! Also delicious. I recommend this place for sure. On top of everything, it's a good clean space with great well maintained bathrooms and comparable prices.

"My treat!" I told my Auntie GodMom. Asked what she wanted for a Saturday lunch. She responded with, "Sushi." So I did some research a couple of days beforehand and found this gem. There were a couple more places in the running - both not too far from here - but this won out because I personally liked the menu better. Picked her and Uncle up and we were well on our way! It isn't very far from their home (which was another reason I chose this place) so we were pulling up in no time. We arrived within 30 minutes of opening time and every spot on their parking lot was available. "Not a good sign..." Uncle says. Eh, we're early, and I didn't wanna judge based solely on that. First timer customers of the day, so we got our pick where to sit. We were immediately given menus and glasses of water. The sushi bar was open so one can see everything going on there. The overall place was clean and had this homely feeling. I felt comfy immediately. I told my company that I had already scanned the menu and if it's alright, I'll order a bunch of stuff, and if they're still hungry after that, we can always order more. They loved that idea since they didn't really need (nor wanted) to think. EDAMAME: A perfect starter. Boiled soft, not too salty. It got our appetite going! MISO SOUP: Also another perfect starter. The miso and water ratio was a perfect blend. Broth had depth. It was a nice tummy warmer on a cold SoCal day, CRAB CAKES: I know, they're shaped like balls, but still pretty tasty. Maybe it's just me, but I tasted both real and imitation crab (more imitation than real) in each bite. They we're still prepped well and delicious. Mayo dip wasn't needed but altered the flavor on a different level. SPANISH MACKEREL SUSHI: Fresh and tasty. It's not as vinegary as some I have previously had, but delish nonetheless. GRILLED SALMON KAMA: A bit under seasoned but grilled almost to perfection. We all enjoyed this, most especially the fatty parts! The meat came off the fishbone so easily. Get this! SASHIMI SAMPLER: It was a combo of salmon, tuna, yellowfin and albacore. Every single one was incredibly fresh. They all stood on their own. If you're a sashimi fiend, this is for you! DEEP-FRIED SOFT SHELL CRABS: I never skip this whenever I see it on the menu. Neither does my AuntieGM, apparently. We each had a half. The batter was very thin, so it didn't take away from the crabs' main essence. It honestly didn't need the dip, it was great on its own. Dip does give it a different flavor profile which wasn't bad either. SHRIMP TEMPURA: Like the crabs, the batter was also thin so it didn't take away much from the shrimp. Nothing to call home about but delicious. Good crunch on the outside, nice and juicy on the inside. Elevated flavor with the tempura dip. FOOD: 4.5. SERVICE: 3.5. VALUE: 4. Soooo worth it! PARKING: Private lot. Not an issue for a weekend lunch. OVERALL: 4. AuntieGM and Uncle each ordered a chicken and pork Katsu as their mains. I guess their eyes were a lot more hungry than their stomachs because they came into realization they were full by the time they arrived on the table. No biggie, they took it to-go to snack on later. Auntie GM loved the edamame so much, she put in an order to go to have as an app when she has her happy hour at home. The whole place had gotten packed within an hour of our arrival. That parking lot - as big as it was - was halfway occupied during our run. They were impressed. As was I, and that's always a plus PLUS. They loved it so much, there are already plans of a return visit, "Next time, my treat!" AuntieGM said. I will absolutely take her up on that offer! You can bet a follow up visit to happen - hopefully sooner than later!

"Money Sea" or "Sea Money" as Okane Umi translates to English...or maybe it's "Show me (see) the money!"I've been here a few times now and I always enjoy myself. Really, my only complaint is the prices but then, sushi everywhere is pricey so this gripe isn't solely about Okane Umi. Still, I do think they could lower some of the prices to attract more clientele but maybe they don't need to because Okane Umi is quite popular. I guess I miss the old Club Sushi (Hermosa Beach) days with my Dad. We were monthly regulars of their amazing Happy Hour which included 1/2 price sushi and specials on drinks. I'd love to see that at Okane Umi and I'd definitely frequent it more often. But I digress. The restaurant itself is modern and attractive and the staff is friendly and attentive. Our most recent visit was for my birthday and my Mom was treating us. I'd made sushi at home multiple times of late so I let her pay for us this time. It is DEFINITELY cheaper to make sushi at home (I paid $6.75 for two pieces of salmon sushi at Okane Umi and I can get a big hunk of sushi grade salmon at Tokyo Central for $10-$12 that makes about 16 pieces), that's for sure, and I've gotten quite good at it, I must say. But every once in awhile, it's nice to turn it over to the professionals. And professionals they are. In addition to regular sushi (which is of very good quality), Okane Umi's menu is large with many creative rolls being offered. I really like how the menu has pictures and full descriptions of each roll.Of the more expensive rolls, we ordered the Hulk Roll ($17.50 - Inside: Spicy smashed Softshell Crab, Crab Meat / Outside: Avocado, Spicy Smashed Soft Shell Crab / With: Sriracha on the Top, Eel Sauce on the Side), Yellowtail Cilantro Roll ($18.50 - Inside: Cucumber, Yellowtail, Cilantro / Outside: Yellowtail, Serrano Pepper / With: Ponzu Sauce on the Top) and two of the rather ridiculously costly Umi Handrolls ($24.50 each - Inside: Cucumber, Chopped, Bluefin Tuna, Sea Urchin, Black Tobiko, Cilantro, Jalapeno, Green Onion / Outside: Wrapped with Soy Paper).Aside from the Umi Handroll, I'm not sure why the other two rolls were priced considerably higher than 'Premium Rolls' which are priced higher than the 'Basic Rolls'. Basic rolls (like California ($7), Spicy Tuna ($8.50), Salmon Skin ($8.50) seem fairly priced; we orderd a Salmon Skin roll and it was tasty. But then the Premium Rolls are $12 - $17. Then the Okane Specialty Rolls are $14 - $24.50 with most being in the $18 average range. Okane Chefs Special Rolls are around the prices of the Okane Specialty Rolls. Oh, and I looked up what Okane means...MONEY!Again, I'm just bitching about high prices in general and these are pretty average compared to other good sushi bars of the same calibre. I just think the Hulk Roll and the Spicy Yellowtail roll could come down a few bucks...and well, the Umi Roll...it was definitely special but I too think that could come down a few bucks as well.As for the taste of the rolls, everything was great. I'd say the Hulk Roll was my least favorite and the my favorite is always the Yellowtail Cilantro Roll. The Umi Handroll was new for me and really delicious but I keep thinking about that $49 charge for the two of 'em.We also ordered the Honey Salmon Roll ($15.50 - Inside: Crabmeat, Fresh Salmon / Outside: Deep Fried (Seaweed Outside) / With: Eel and Spicy Mayo on top) and it was tasty as well as a couple veggie rolls (veggie tempura roll and a cucumber, avocado, cream cheese roll) in soy paper ($1.50 upcharge) for my non-seafood eating wife ($12 & $12.50) and she enjoyed them very much. We ordered a Salmon Roll for $9.50 and it was good. The sushi was great...three of us had 2 pieces of salmon ($6.75 each order) and 2 pieces of yellowtail ($7.50 each order). I had wanted an order of Ankimo sushi but they brought sashimi for $19.50; honestly, I didn't catch the mistake at the time but I certainly would have preferred the $7.50 charge for 2 pieces of sushi or even $11.75 for 3 pieces of sashimi. I mean, 5 pieces of monkfish liver for the only guy who would eat it is a bit much and I LIKE Ankimo....sushi.Our attentive server brought us free ice cream for my birthday which was a nice touch. Now, we ordered a lot and the bill was high for the 5 of us, in my opinion, especially with 1 non-fish eater and no booze. 3 of us ordered non-alcoholic drinks and the total with 20% tip was $306. One of the reasons we ordered so much is that my Mom (with memory issues) kept saying she had had only 2 pieces of sushi and she was still hungry. My kiddos quickly learned to also say that they had had only 2 pieces of sushi so they could get Grandma to order more. I had to put an end to this rather quickly but we were stuffed when we left.Bottom line: Great sushi, service and ambiance at standard (yet high for me) prices.Rock bottom line: We'll definitely be back next time this home sushi chef (ME) needs a break. lol

I posted a review in 2019 and rated it as **** We've been here several times since. Recently, it changed ownership and there was a remarkable improvement. Previously, my complaint was that the sushi was dry ... but ... it's improved now. We were here last night. It was excellent. The sashimi was fresh, moist, and had flavor. The waitstaff has changed and has become much more attentive. The upgrade to ***** is well-deserved and we look forward to getting back again.

Your above average sushi roll joint. Did not have sashimi so can't speak to that but if you're craving Americanized sushi rolls in a more casual ambiance, this is your spot. We started with crispy tofu nuggets($6.50) and seaweed salad ($5.50). The tofu nuggets (5pc) tasted like they were mixed with something else so very flavorful and not just your average crispy tofu. The seaweed salad was fresh and delicious, though a smaller portion. Not too overly vinegary. We ordered the spicy eel tempura roll ($18.50) and the sunset roll ($21.50). I preferred the spicy baked eel, I asked for the spicy Mayo on the side. It had generous portions of eel tempura, crabmeat, cucumber, avocado, and spicy tuna and it barely fit in one bite. Loved the crispiness of the eel tempura to add to the texture of all the other soft fish meats and the cucumber to offset the grease and add a bit of fresh crispiness to the mix. The sunset roll was just okay, but featured avo, salmon, and blue crab meat in the inside and salmon, lemon slices on the outside. We also ordered a draft Asahi (love me some fresh draft beer to wash down the fish) and white wine. Staff were incredibly attentive and didn't rush us out as we were deep in conversation and stayed for an hour and half or nearly two hours. The ambiance is casual but still cute. They have a parking lot with plenty of space. Definitely want to go back and try the other rolls and menu items. And perhaps even give their sashimi a try.

Absolutely love this sushi joint! We stopped by here last night for the first time before catching the movies. We were greeted and we sat in the sushi bar. Sushi Chef Eddie was so hilarious! We enjoyed our dinner with his stories! Food is amazingly good! Thick slices of fresh fish! The presentation is really nice, even their seaweed salad looks wonderful in the bowl and it's seaweed... They have a variety of sake available as well. Servers are so nice and friendly here! Indoor dining only. They have their own parking lot. Very chill, relaxing fun restaurant to visit and we will definitely come back!

I'd never been here for dinner before. I had lunch here a few times before a nearby movie. i always liked it.But dinner was even better. I was here with a friend and we enjoyed a bounty of sushi delights. They have a nice selection of cold sake, and priced well.We had ankimo sashimi, toro sashimi, blue fin tuna sashimi, uni sushi, saba sushi, the lovely cucumber salad, plus a few more things. Everything was fresh, well prepared and quite tasty. When we got there, we knew we wanted to chat, and the only open places in the main area were at the bar (which i normally prefer) and a little table. Neither were conducive to our goals. The waiter suggested a table in an adjacent room. It was roomy and quiet. Perfect really. We ordered a little at a time and the servers were accommodating and attentive. The service was great. This is not a super fancy place. But their fish is fresh and well prepared, and their waitpersons are terrific. It's a great place for very good sushi.

We've been coming to okane for years! Even before they sold and renamed it, probably 10+ years.Everytime we eat here or order take out it's been worse and worse.Today was probably the worst tasting sushi we've ever had there. $120+ for two people and the sushi tasted like horrible quality, smelled very fishy and we ended up throwing almost all of it away. We couldn't eat it, it tasted very low quality and both have pretty bad stomach aches. Sadly, I think okane finally lost us as long time customers.
